Rewatched it last week.
The second half wasn't as bad as i remember. My only problem was Mello and keeping track of which Death Note was being used.
After all this time i still wish L had properly won.

That is my problem with Mello. What was he trying to accomplish by kidnapping Takeda? His clumsy actions led to the discovery of Mikami's note by luck. How could he have been sure that the SPK were following Mikami and that Light and Mikami were going to kill Takeda? What stopped Light from killing Mello with the note in his watch? Why was Mello allowed to live for so long?

Lidner was Mello's inside man, and relayed Near's endgame to Mello. Mello was more clever than Near, so it occurred to him that Mikami's Death Note might be a fake. But Mello was too prideful and autistic to tell Lidner "tell Near to make sure Mikami's Death Note is the real one" and so directly help Near, so he forced a situation where Mikami would have to use the real note.

Also, I didn't answer your "why didn't Light kill Mello" bit. Light knew Mello's name, but his father was the only one who saw his face, hence Light begging Soichiro in his death bed to write Mello's name in the book.
