Them being kids is critical to the story's plotline and tone. such innocience contrasted with the utter and certain death they are facing is the very nature of the show, and of the abyss itself.

The abyss looks like a great, virgin, innocent landscape. in actually it's Uncle Lovecraft's funtime murderhole. an adult or adolescent would break, but a child with a child's determination can make them have hope up until they die.

People keep bringing up that the manga is about suffering, and that everything is a railway to suffering.

I totally and completely disagree. I think it's about the immense pressure of optimism and hope to OVERCOME suffering. Things get bad, but the characters always keep moving, they stay happy, and things do usually work out.

Even with the obvious really bad shit (Mitty and Prushka), those events are retroactively put into a hopeful lens. Mitty moved on after giving Riko the hope to stay alive, having been freed. Prushka gets to join Riko on her adventure, in spirit if not in person, she is now a good friend.

The cuteness isn't some kind of fucking ruse to draw you in for a cheap shot, it's almost like it's actually the darkness that is a ruse to draw people in towards the light.

I think you were missing the fact that the characters are essentially doomed to die from the start. They are optimistic about reaching the bottom of the abyss with no hope of ever returning, which doesn't strike me as very happy.

But I agree that the darkness and gore aren't just some shit thrown in to entertain shallow edgelords but are legit challenges for the characters to overcome, and the immense psychological and emotional pressure and trauma they have to go through doesn't seem fake or forced to me, since some sinister undercurrent has been present from the very beginning.

They're doomed to never return. The characters Riko and co. meet along the way reassure them that there is the possibility that Lyza may still be alive, that survival at the bottom is possible. There is that ever-present glimmer of hope at the bottom of the well that is like a dim, tiny light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Even if she is dead, why can't Riko and her friends be the first to prove to the world that the Abyss can be tamed, that it can be beaten? They may be kids, but they're kids who've done the impossible and earned the right to call themselves white whistles and have reached depths that few could ever dream of reaching in their old age.

That's basically how it is, Nanachi's explanation of the curse made it sound like there were constant 'waves' even on a single layer, though you also need to keep in mind that Riko is still a child and so she's not able to handle the curse as much as adults potentially could. I think the distance you can travel before getting the curse is generally around 10 metres, but yeah, I don't think it's entirely set.
