Space battleship Yamato/Star Blazers

I've only seen the Japanese version, and only the first season. I know I need to watch the super long movie too, but no hurry.

I really liked the anime, it was very good.

Both of the super long movies are just theatrical cuts of the the first two seasons respectivly though. Everything beyond that belongs in the trash.

I thought Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato was the true ending to S1 before it was retconned because they were greedy and wanted to make more?

So the true story is Space Battleship Yamato -> Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato
And the alternative story Space Battleship Yamato -> Space Battleship Yamato 2 -> ...

Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato got a big backlash at the time because of the amount of character death in the final act. Season 2 was basically a TV length remake where everyone makes it out okay in the end. I still think season 2 is worth watching though. May seem like a bit of a cheap cash in, though in retrospect that is nothing compared to that abomniation of a film, Space Battleship Yamato - Final Chapter, where they brought back Okita.
