It's not really something you have to "get" since he's loved and wanted to protect Sakura in the other routes too. Examples of that were all over the place. There isn't anything unrelateable to how Shirou wanted to protect someone he viewed as family in HF. Between Unlimited Blade Works and Gate of Babylon, UBW has the greater draw speed. Gilgamesh has to retrieve the weapons he wants from his vault before he's able to use it, but Shirou's weapons are all there, waiting for him. This means that Shirou can always be on the offensive. By the time Gilgamesh has drawn a weapon, Shirou's sword is already in his hand, flying towards Gil's face. Gilgamesh has no choice but to block. It doesn't matter if Shirou doesn't have A-class STR or whatever. Getting cut by a Noble Phantasm WILL hurt. The reason Shirou was able to overpower Gilgamesh was because of this tactic. But it was really about finding joys in today – even when it doesn’t seem like there are any… and about having faith in a tomorrow. Basically, Tohno Shiki could die ten years from that conversation with Aoko, or he might not even wake up the next day. Although we don’t “live close to death”, the same basic concept applies. There are no promises in life. So you can go through life miserable only to be potentially snuffed out tomorrow, or you can find your own happiness and hope it extends into your future.

Shirou doesn't trace Nine Lives. That's not how Nine Lives works with an axe sword. What Shirou traced was Berserker's strength. It doesn't matter if his own strength is inferior; the sword itself moves with such speed and velocity that it perfectly emulates Berserker's strength. The same thing happened in the Fate route with Caliburn: the sword itself was moving so fast that Shirou's own body could barely keep up and it was causing him pain.

Shirou named in "Nine Lives Blade Works", but all it really is is swinging the sword nine time so fast that it almost seems simultaneous. It's merely an application of Berserker's own sheer strength and dexterity. The true Nine Lives is nothing that simple.

Tracing copies the wielder's technique, not the sword's memory. Nine Lives Blade Works is an application of Nine Lives using swords, and even then he can only get 8 simultaneous slashes. Nine Lives got its name from Heracles simultaneously killing all 9 heads of the Hydra at the same time, preventing it from regenerating, only managing 8 is an absolute failure.

Even in the route, he even stated that, Blackened Herc would've sliced his head off, because the ninth attack is a straight on stab done after the other 8, if Ilya didn't distract him he'd been dead.
