making gohan the mc was rejected multple times, with goku coming back to save the day. gohan vs the saiyans? goku gets revived. gohan vs frieza? nope gotta have goku be the super saiyan. gohan vs cell? cant have him win by himself, need goku to sacrifice himself and have his spirit help gohan after that.

for the buu saga there was efforts for either goten and trunks/gotenks or gohan, but that didnt work either gotta have goku come back by bringing back a character thats been irrelevant since forever.

In the end of DBZ Goku says it's Pan who has the most guts in their house, maybe it was joke or Goku saying he was disappointed with Gohan and Goten for not training as much as they should. The reason Goku becomes so excited with Uub is to have someone to succeed him.

The biggest mistake was the Great Saiyaman stuff being the introduction to Gohan taking the role of the protagonist.

Whether or not writers intend for it, readers often self insert as the main character, especially in stories aimed at kids, like shonen action manga.

So what happens when you replace the cool hero Goku with a bumbling high school student who's basically a Peter Parker parody without the quips and down on his luck relatability?

If Toriyama was serious about Gohan as the MC, he should have transitioned into the History of Trunk Gohan in terms of seriousness and personality. He'd already gone through a ton of shit, beat Cell, and now had the job of defending Earth on his shoulders. Instead, the guy actually /regressed./
