Serial experiments Lain was way ahead of its time. I had an internet and a mother playing video games of this child in 1996. It also depicted the internet as a separate place that everyone spends hours in. Knights was almost Anonymous. It's an amazing show. I re watch it every year.

Just because one experiments with animation, composition and montage doesn't mean it's trying to be avant garde, SPECIALLY if what they do is strictly narrative. Watch Tokyo Loop and follow from there.
