Is falling in love with your childhood friend (male) who gets turned into a girl (female) via ancient norse magic the one true form of love?
>>
Shame >she got ruined in the end, I loved her as a reverse trap.
>>
We will never find out because the author for some reason was either too stupid or too pussy to realize that turning him back was the logical conclusion and the only way to squeeze more drama out of the setting.

I feel like Boku girl would have been enjoyable (to me) if Mizuki was actually a girl in the beginning, but Loki changed the gender to a boy instead (other way around) and Mizuki was instead get picked on constantly by other boys. Lets note that Mizuki and Takeru are still childhood friends; but the supposedly selling point of the manga would have been jealousy mostly coming from Takeru (from seeing Mizuki, as a lady / love interest now, being hit on by other boys) as well as romance development. The comedy / ecchi part would revolve around Mizuki living in pants instead of skirts. The endgame would be Mizuki failling in love with Takeru and turning back into a girl, and goes on a relationship.

I know im nitpicking and this is gender-bender genre, but if Boku girl was like this but the other way around like i described, I would have enjoyed it more honestly. Both likable while keeping the gender-bender element relevant

All You Zombies by Robert A. Heinlein?

It's not gay if you have sex with yourself and you are both the male and the female and you turn out to be your own parents at the same time, right?
>>
>>160884906
So if a woman has memories of having a dick and fucking other women for a single day, but otherwise remembers only being a woman and is physically female, then it's only trace amounts of gay? Does her having a reoccuring dream about having and using a dick make it slightly but increasingly gay? If you have memories or dreams in proportion to hers about vagina wielding, does it even out to not gay, or compound the gayness? Is it gay to swap bodies with a woman then get fucked by her?
>>160885313
That wasn't sex change by time travel, just sex change then time travel. Sex that results in pregnancy can't be gay.

I'd like this series more if:
>it didn't drag on needlessly with other shitty characters joining in (especially that one unfunny 'weird' guy)
>misunderstandings didn't keep happening as a roadblock for progression
>Mizuki had any personality
>the ending wasn't rushed and super sudden

Literally the only reason people like this is because of Mizuki's character design
>>
>>160884021
I don't entirely disagree with you, and I believe that the series should have ended with him turning back into a boy and getting with the girl, but transforming into a girl also seemed to effect his brain chemistry, which makes sense considering it was a magical transformation. Still gay for Takeru, but a lot less so if Mizuki were to get with another guy that didn't know him before he changed into a girl.
>>
>>160885387
>But he's a guy...

>>
Any gender-bender romance manga that are less gay? All the ones I've read, including Boku Girl, were all "but I'm a boy" tier, I want a story that is less about the guy accepting his friend suddenly turning to a woman and more about the gender-bent person embracing their new gender

>>160886157
>standards set high

Dude didn't it end up her just having a psychological melt down and wanting to escape the stresses of her life rather than genderbending?

Cause goddamn that story started promising but when I was told about that I dropped it immediately. It looked damn good too.
>>
>>160886032
Yeah let's be honest, the guy was already a girl with dick before the transformation. It was better for him.
>>
>>160884783
You got a link to that? Never knew there was a Doujin of Boku Girl
>>
>>160886197
Yeah that's exactly it, it was a nice twist even though it was predictable if you were familiar with Oshimi Shuzo's stories. It might have not been your standard gender-bender manga but maybe that's why I liked it.
>>
>>160886306
Nice twist? I mean I am not familiar with Oshimi Shuzo's work but god damn man, the potential wasted on that twist was phenomenal.

There could have been a brilliant story arc of both characters gradually adjusting to their own bodies, first meeting conflict, then doubt, and gradually fitting and even excelling in their new roles within their new bodies. Break down the original characters life only to rebuild their own.

Maybe I'm thinking too much into it but I felt that would have been more powerful. We already have plenty of anime about going into the darker ends of the mind and its coping.
>>
>no hung futafuji to compete with takeru

so much potential wasted
>>
>>160880046
I think I would like it more if the dude wasn't so obviously gay for his best friend but then ended up with the convenient circumstance that the dude turned into a girl. At that point it's basically just the mc accepting that he loves the penis and while I'll fap to that all day, an interesting story it does not make.
The chick falling for him in spite of him being a girl was way more interesting. I wish it had focused on that instead.
>>
>>160886424
But Mari is a story about healing, sure there are twisted individuals but keeping it somewhat realistic gives more credit to character interactions. It's all personal preference I guess, I might be biased since he's my favourite author after all.

I'll never understand the appeal of genderbent stories where a dude turns into a girl and suddenly they want a boyfriend. Why even make it a genderbender story to begin with?
>>
>>160887680
Remix Heart is the only manga I know where that is the case. The other manga where the genderbent MC develops feelings for a guy I know of (Artificial Maiden, Boku Girl, Idol Pretender, Kanojo ni Naru Hi Another, Megu Milk, Nozomu Nozomi, Sekainohate de Aimashou), all have the protagonist falling in love with a guy who knows that she used to be a man.

Because you get to see the character struggling with novel feelings cause by her new body before eventually accepting them. And the character realizing that she now likes boys is a good way to have her accept that she's now a woman rather than a guy in a girl's body.

If the character simply likes girls even after her transformation then she doesn't have to question her gender identity in the way a character whose sexual orientation has been changed does.
>>
>>160887866
Because she used to be a man, that's not interesting enough?
>>
>>160887873
For good reason. It makes the protagonist less sympathetic if they're selfish liars.
>>
>>160887873
That's disappointing, I've read Boku Girl and Kanojo ni Naru Hi while I have Artificial Maiden and Nozomu in my backlog. I think it's a very interesting genre but more often than not it turns into what feels like every gay man's fantasy and since I'm not gay myself it's a bit off-putting. I'm more into understanding the intricacies behind the opposite gender (either sexually or mentally) but unfortunately none of the series I've tried so far delve into this subject that much.
>>
>>160888060
But she did not use to be a man, she's just trolling him. Stop misleading people, even though Sundome is a good read.
>>
>>160888060
Why does it make them a selfish liar? Why should someone bare their past to others, especially if they worry that it may lead to their ostracism? When it comes to genderbending the character is a biological woman, so it's not as if it makes a difference.

And the protagonists in the series I listed didn't choose to confess their pasts either; the guys they fell in love with simply used to know them before they transformed.

I claim that is false, and that changing orientation as well is a lazy story element to bring about the desired conflict. I submit this image pertinent to the discussion of storytelling in this medium in support of my claim.
>>
>>160888249
>Why should someone bare their past to others
They're starting a serious relationship.
>>
>>160888276
Once a relationship starts then sure. But in Remix Heart the characters are not in a relationship.
>>
>>160888030
The idea that having a girls body would make you want the dick is what is stupid. The story is then just "wow, girl loves boys news at 11". Interesting genderbender stories actually deal with what is physically different and the difference in people's attitudes towards the mc. Having the mc just fall for some guy just makes the story a typical romance with a contrived plot device to keep the relationship from progressing. Using your body as an excuse for who you fall in love with is boring.

If they aren't sure if that's the reason or not it can still provide conflict.
>>
>>160888371
The human brain is sexually dimorphic. Male homosexuals have brains that are wired similarly to those of women and lesbians to those of men. There has been plenty of research on this area, e.g.:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18559854

It makes perfect sense that a magical transformation which gave the character a heterosexual female brain would cause them to start being attracted to men. You don't consciously choose who you are attracted to and the person's sex is an extremely important factor.

And there's no reason for a genderbending story not to have the elements you mentioned and also have the character's sexual orientation be affected.
>>
>>160888043
I don't think so. The mc just accepting that, as a girl, she now loves dudes is boring. An occasional thought bubble of "but I'm a dude,I can't fall for another boy!" is on the same level as "but she's my childhood friend!" when it comes to stalling out the romance.

>>
>>160883963
I know it was published, but was included in the actual takobon?
>>
>>160888648
What is on-topic? The only long genderbending manga with a heavy lesbian focus is Kashimashi and its protagonist was more girly than most of the girls even before getting turned into a woman. Plus, she immediately adjusted to life as a girl, everyone instantly accepted her as a woman and the lesbian love triangle proceeded as if the protagonist had always been a girl. It covered none of the things you seem to think a lesbian story would allow to be explored.
>>
>>160888536
If you're just going to change the mc's brain to like the opposite sex then what's the point of making it genderbent? It just turns it into a plot device for why the romance isn't progressing. If you just take a male brain and turn it into a female brain then all you've done is given your mc a contrived backstory. I do think it's possible to make a good story out of this but I've never seen it happen.

The point is that the character faces conflict between who she is now and who she was in the past. If the protagonist has always been a girl then there is no such conflict and it would be much more difficult to have it in a story where the character's self-conception as male isn't challenged. Also, you can have that in a story where romance is a secondary element.

You are claiming that genderbending is only used in order to provide an excuse for the character to refuse to commit to a relationship. I disagree. You can have a character struggling over her personal identity after recognizing that their minds have been affected by their transformation. It doesn't have to amount to the character blueballing the dude who likes her. Both Nozomu Nozomi and Remix Heart have that.

Since you claim that a story where a male character gets transformed into a lesbian provides a better opportunity for it to explore gender-related issues, could you provide some examples of that?
>>
>>160888950
>Can't stand being sexually harrassed.
>Weakness.
>>
>>160889406
It could have been explained with him enjoying being a girl and enjoying the dresses because it allowed him to express his feelings for Takeru. Yumeko liking Takeru could have been used at first to show Mizuki getting jealous of Takeru for Yumeko liking him then later revealed he was only jealous because she was stealing Takeru from him.

Most of the good ones are just crossdressing so I don't know if that fits for you. Shut hell and ranma 1/2 even though it's a comedy. Shinshunki bitter change I thought was really good though I fell off on reading it. Bokura no kiseki is also good.
Of the Cross dressing ones, basara and kaze hikaru are classics.
When a character actually struggles over their identity then sure. But in any manga I've read where the thrust is a guy turns into a girl and now likes guys it amounts to a few thought bubbles of "but I used to be a guy..." and maybe some twisting and turning at night. It's shallow. Same thing for girl turning into a guy and suddenly likes girls though I think that's a pretty rare scenario.
>>
>>160891426
I don't know about crossdressing manga bout Shut Hell doesn't explore the generbending angle. It's much a fish out of water situation where the protagonist ends up in a body that happens to be female.

As for Ranma, it was primarily a harem and martial arts parody with some genderbending thrown in. Ranma's transformation was treated either as a disguise or a temporary inconvenience and Ranma himself never reflected upon the effects of the transformation to his identity. Not that I blame the manga for that since it was a gag series aimed at elementary schoolers.

I fail to see how either of these examples explore genderbending. If anything, Ranma is more shallow than most genderbending series; the characters are practically caricatures.
>>
>>160892829
Not much to say other than you should reread if that's your opinion on the two series you called out. Shut hell very much had to do with genderbending (though a lot of it actually focused on language) and the whole thrust of ranma is him dealing with his girl transformation. It's primarily a comedy but it does delve into some more serious topics and is a good lighthearted view on what might happen if you could turn into a girl and also shoot lasers out of your hands.
You should read the other series I mentioned as it might show you how much better the genre can be than just shoujo tier "girl likes guy but this time she's confused about her love because she used to be a guy."

Care to provide examples from Shut Hell or Ranma where the characters reflect on their gender? Shut Hell is about a modern Japanese schoolboy who's forced to act as a medieval warrior.

And I don't remember Ranma ever being serious. I don't think that Ranma could be serious either. If you tried to treat it seriously then you'd have to conclude that the characters are completely and utterly insane. Ryoga for example is presented as one of the good guys, but in the Fishing Pole of Love arc he literally tries to brainwash Akane into falling in love with him, which is the sort of thing you'd expect a villain to do. And then he tries to murder Ranma because he thinks that once Akane learns he has killed him she will immediately fall in love with him. What better way to win a girl's heart than murdering the guy she has feelings for after all? And of course he's also a huge stalker that spends a lot of time in disguise around the girl he likes without her ever knowing, and even bathes and sleeps with her. One can hardly imagine a more flagrant violation of privacy. Since this is comedy all this gets a pass, which is why Ranma doesn't try to be serious. If you tried to have serious characterization then the whole thing would fall apart.

By the way, I have read Shinshunki Bitter Change. I found it pretty uninteresting because by the time the characters were in high school they had spent more time in their new bodies than they had in their original ones, but they didn't seem to have adjust to them at all. If anything you'd expect them to be more used to living as their current than their previous sex.

I quickly lost interest in Bokura no Kiseki, but it didn't seem to focus on genderbending but was much more about a past conflict being revisited by the reincarnated cast.

You're missing the point of ranma. It's a comedy of errors that relishes in situational irony. The characters do have their introspective moments in-between being insane. It's one of the reasons it's considered an all time classic and one of the best gender bender mangas. Ranma is constantly battling with him himself and turning a girl. His escapism is treating it like a convenience even though he absolutely hates it. Eventually, he learns to live with it but it takes a number of years and 32 volumes of experiences. Ranma is a comedy first and foremost but you're blind if you can't see everything else that it does.
If you look at bitter change through the eyes of expecting them to accept their new gender then yes. But it's not about that. They don't suddenly have a magical girl brain just because that's what their body type is and it doesn't matter how many years they're like that they will always think of themselves as their true gender. The story is about dealing with their bodies and the people around them not just accepting it.
Kiseki has a strong subplot involving genderbending. Pretty much the entire cast is.
Shut hell i would need to revisit for specific examples because it's been awhile since I read it but I do remember it having genderbending themes.

I get it, you like it when the mc turns "gay" after being genderbent. I think that's the most boring and uninspired form of genderbending.

Ranma is popular, but the genderbending is only of secondary importance. If you want something similar to Ranma with an emphasis on genderbending then there's Futaba-kun Change. The characters in Ranma are never introspective and they never really evolve. Ranma complains less about his curse later on but even in the end of the manga he abandons his own wedding ceremony to try and get something that might break the curse. And he never really reflects on his transformation; he simply treats it either as an inconvenience or as something he can exploit.

Just because a series has genderbending in it doesn't mean that it focuses on it. It seems to me that you like series that have genderbending in them rather than focusing on it. Which is fine, but you can't really present them as superior genderbending stories.

The characters are constantly introspective. I mean ryogas main attack literally comes from depression. You have ranmas mother who would kill him if she found out about him turning into a girl because it's not manly. Characters around him are constantly questioning his sexuality because of how he treats his girl form. Just because it's lighthearted about how it presents these problems and troubles doesn't mean they aren't there. I'm not really sure what else to say - ranma is focused on genderbending. That's the whole plot. Literally everything that happens in that manga is a consequence of either ranma being a girl, not being able to accept turning into a girl, or other people/the world at large taking advantage of him turning into a girl. There are some sub plots that don't revolve around that but it's always there even when it's not the main focus for a particular arc.
I like good manga and sometimes that includes genderbending. If you include crossdressing, more than half of the ones I brought up focus on genderbending. Thanks for reminding me about futaba I couldn't remember that one when I was thinking of examples.

Genderbending isn't that important in the story. Most Ranma stories are about Ranma meeting someone who is good at some parody of a martial art and doing everything he can to beat them at their own game. And there are quite a few stories where Ranma is in conflict with other men over his harem or his harem fighting to get him.

Ryoga is depressed because he's friendzoned by the girl he loves, but that's never really explored in the story or treated as more than a joke. And Ranma's mother is just another joke character that doesn't make sense. She's supposed to be really kind and everyone reacts that way to her, but when she sees her son for the first time in years the first thing she does is try to decapitate him for not being manly. And the fact she had let her deadbeat husband run off with their child with the agreement that she'd decapitate them if their son wasn't manly enough made absolutely no sense. It's never explained why she wants to murder her own son and husband over such a dumb reason; it's just there to create gags in the manga.
>>
>>160895741
Also, you complain about genderbending being used as an excuse to keep a romance from moving forward, but the main relationship in the manga is kept at a complete stasis for almost the entire run of the manga. The relationship of Ranma and Akane is like that of two young siblings. And its resolution right at the very end felt really perfunctory.
>>
>>160896173
I really think you should reread ranma and think about the characters and their motivations during all of their antics. I think you'd see what I'm talking about if you did.
For example, either you or another poster brought up how incredibly shitty ryoga actually is in how he treats akane - do you think he doesn't realize that? If he doesn't, how is he the only one able to use the ultimate form of the hokodan? He's able to hate himself so much that he can literally turn that despair into a physical manifestation and make himself impervious to it's affects.

>>160896388
You don't think the constant suitors and ranmas general attitude weren't to blame? It's true that ranma didn't feel man enough to get married but it was also true that akane called him a freak when she learned about it. He wanted to be a whole man and couldn't bring himself to accept what he was until much later.

I was the one that brought that up and I think you are overanalyzing Ryoga. He never reflects on whether his actions are bad; his despair is because he can't get a girlfriend, not because he hates himself for wanting to murder his friend and brainwash the girl he stalks into loving him. His despair is so great because this is a joke manga, not due to him having some sort of deep self-loathing.

You are also overanalyzing Ranma. He never shows the sort of insecurity you claim he does and he certainly doesn't try to break his curse in order to earn Akane's approval.

I was quite pleased with the ending of Boku Girl. Mizuki was always so crazy feminine that it felt like he found the role he was always supposed to have, now he can be dainty and pretty and it's suitable. Also I enjoyed Takeru struggling with his growing attraction to his "male" bestie and him trying to no homo his feelings, and the fact that he'll at last get to hit that to his heart's content without feeling weird about wanting to fuck his best friend. Author kept introducing useless characters and Mizuki's interactions with Fujiwara and Takeru became way to formulaic.
>>
>>160913611
I agree. Boku Girl was very badly paced. I got the feeling that the manga was more popular than the author expected and he just added in filler to make it last longer. The way Takeru and Mizuki kept almost fucking only to be interrupted by something stupid and then both of them behaving as if nothing ever happened got very old and stretched my suspension of disbelief. And as you said, the author kept introducing annoying characters who were after Mizuki in order to keep the story from progressing and made the series feel like a harem. Despite that, the ending felt a bit rushed. Maybe the author kept adding filler until the editor told him that it was no longer profitable and pulled the plug.

While I agree that this point is valid, I'm pretty sure that a person going through their psychological development as a male will heavily influence what they're attracted to, in the same way that things like fetishes develop. It's very likely that things like attraction become ingrained through repetition and environment even if the initial stages of that attraction do hinge of the initial seed that people have.

For example, it's more likely that a child will identify as gay if they are raised by gay parents; this shows that upbringing can influence sexual desire in some fashion, and if this is the case it could logically follow that if you spend 18 years or whatever the fuck as a straight man knowing only what it is to be a straight man, even if your brain magically assumed female "wiring" patterns, you would likely maintain your same sexual orientation because it just becomes fucking ingrained and second-nature.

I don't normally read gender-benders; gender/sexual identity isn't typically a theme I have much interest in. But I really, REALLY like Boku Girl - to the point where it might be my favorite manga. I love the characters, and the comedy. But I also think it's take on gender issues is a lot more complex than people seem to give it credit for.

Putting the (entirely plausible) possibility of magical changes to brain chemistry aside, I fully understand why some people would take issue with the idea of the protagonist suddenly changing gender/sexual identity in line with their physical transformation. The truth is, though, that's not really what happens in Boku Girl. Mizuki doesn't really change that much over the course of the manga - it's really more a story coming to acceptance - not with "new" feelings, but with Mizuki's original ones.

Even as a boy, Mizuki was always incredibly feminine. In fact, his obsession with "manliness" seems to be almost entirely an artifact of his relationship with his overbearing father. Mizuki has two people in his life that he has deep admiration and affection for: Takeru, who he sees ans the ultimate expression of masculinity, and Fujiwara, who he sees as the ultimate expression of femininity. These feelings are expressed in the only way possible for them to be expressed: he "loves" Fujiwara and he "idolizes" Takeru. He can't really express them any way else, because of his father's influence; he isn't allowed to be a feminine boy, and he certainly isn't allowed to be gay. These doors simply aren't open to him.

Swapping genders suddenly changes this: Mizuki's adoration for Takeru can now be expressed as love and her adoration for Fujiwara can be expressed as admiration/emulation. Most of the manga is Mizuki coming to realize this is even a possibility, realizing she has the ability to choose how to live, and coming to terms with what she actually wants. (continued below)

I'm pretty sure that in Mizuki's mind judo was the manliest thing out there. It's not just an issue of size, but about power and agency.

Do you have a reference to a scientific article to support the idea that children of gay parents are more likely to state that they're gay? That's a nice analysis of the manga. A pity that Boku Girl has flaws like I discussed here: >>160914376 I think it would have benefited from being shorter and with a tighter story.

I would tend to agree, though I think that - in the grand scheme of things - the flaws you mention are tolerable. I think the readers gave out a collective sigh when Yamada and his fiancee showed up (though I actually think that turned out alright in the end - their "date" was actually pretty enjoyable and helped to push things forward). Lesbian incho and the rival seemed somewhat superfluous, especially when their stories didn't really seem to end up going anywhere. Shitty pacing is a pretty common issue for manga, so maybe I am more or less immune to it by now? The ending definitely felt rushed, but I think that was primarily because of the failure to bring the aforementioned "unnecessary" character arcs to completion. Ultimately, I don't feel like any of this is fatal, however. I'd still recommend the manga.

Nonsense. They collaborated on the trapmodo guide. They are as knowledgeable and respectable faggots as /a/.

Mizuki wasn't trans. She wasn't attached enough to any gender to even fix his sex when it changed. Y'all faggots care very much about gender to the point of being defined by it, correct? Mizuki was more meh-sexual. Just trying to arrive at something convenient for pursuing more important things, like relationships or money. Like most people.

"Because you can" is reason enough for some things, especially becoming the little girl.

>She wasn't attached enough to any gender to even fix his sex when it changed.
How did you come to this conclusion. She spends most of the manga insisting she wants to change back - its only when it actually happens that she starts to consider whether that's actually what she really wants.
