The problem I had with SSY, more than its directorial choices or animation style or anything else, was the fact that the author created an amazing, fleshed out world with tons of potential for interesting stories, and then made the main focus on what is one of the least interesting stories.

I can certainly see how something even as cruel as killing your own children could pass off as the "morally correct choice" in a society where kids have the potential to become atomic bombs and disintegrate entire cities with no one being capable of stopping them. (And with such cases having already happened in the past.)
