I don't think it's unreasonable. The anime has been consistently preserving action and important scenes and shortening everything else.

The Orth arc in particular is all over the place compared to the manga. Some scenes were cut, others moved around, others montaged. Yet scenes like the snake fight were untouched.

They'll have to pick up the pace a bit, but it's possible.

You're focusing too much on the page count. They don't just adapt page for page.

The main selling point of the anime is its environments and atmosphere. They shortened some dialogue in the Orth arc, but made sure to show the viewer as much of the city as possible. They aren't going to spend an entire episode talking in a tree house, they'll adapt enough to show the viewer what's inside and then do the fight scene.

Idofront appears in the OP as well, and they aren't going to show the viewer such a cool looking place and then cuck them by ending the series before they go inside.

So when the 2000 year cycle rolls around, will Orth become the new first layer and all the other layers get pushed down one notch? Maybe none of those lost civilizations started out in the abyss, they just got sucked in.

The seriousness and originality of the source material is riddled away by a knife of lackluster mediocrity, almost as if it's a totally different story.
It had source material potential and it threw it away into the Abyss, pun intended.
Upon reading the manga Vs watching the anime very little is to complain about in regards to how the material looks Vs the source material.
The studio however has made almost every effort to replicate the look, which is good for manga fans. However, they seem to be taking shortcuts whenever they can. Skipping fight scenes and skipping detailed food examinations to expand on world building like the manga did, etc. This effects the story, something the studio and content creator didn't think too much about during the anime board meetings.
I don't think I've ever heard such a terrible soundtrack. It is extremely unfitting, OP and ED.
I found myself downloading and editing the opening to I-RabBits - Starliner instead of the cringe-fest of a song that my ears had to endure during the opening. I skipped the EDs completely.
What a shell of it's former self.
Due to the extreme lack of mature content, (I'm obviously not talking about naked lolis hanging from the rafters) our characters just don't grow. I can't see them growing. Made in Abyss is an extremely dark story.
Imagine you just received a new puppy.
Within seconds his body is smashed into the pavement, you fall to your knees holding his entrails whilst moaning in absolute shock and horror brought on by sadness. This is the appeal of loss, but you grow from loss. Many characters will be lost in this series, and I cannot for the life of me see myself caring for any of them in this adaptation like I did in the manga.

Not worth my time, or any manga readers time in respect to this weak adaptation.
