I once saw a post arguing that Kubo should just draw a slice of life series about people in the fashion industry, because it would play way more to his strengths as an artist than bleach ever did. I know I'd read it.

I honestly don't understand why people still say this; even he stated once that an outfit of Renjis was one he saw in a Dolce & Gabbana ad or something like that. Majority of the cool clothes he drew were probably just outfits he picked out of a magazine or something.

Sales started dropped during the Deicide arc. By the FB arc, there was a drastic drop and it was never able to get back into the great sales it had during the beginning/middle of the HM arc which were in the 700/800/900k or even at times a million range for just one volume; that was the only time Bleach was truly selling Naruto-level. Only the first volume of the final arc was able to break over 700k.

yeah but they don't typically cut a series' cover or color page time just for poor sales, typically it's a fairly fair distribution with a few concessions made to the better off series. A general reduction in covers would've been one thing, but typically a series doesn't get straight up cut from even the balanced rotation the way Bleach did. 2 and 1 cover(s) in a year is low.

Fuck, these make me really sad because they remind me of enjoyable Bleach was at the start.
Kubo was doing such a great job with the urban fantasy setting, I really wish he wouldn't drop it so hard. Even when he bounced back to it after SS arc it was great.
Same goes for the characters, these are so much more entertaining and likeable than the any of the captains.
Not to mention that art, that was simply stellar and full of life, it did maintain it's quality for a long time, but this has to be my favorite phase.
I really need to reread.

honestly I always felt like the whole ghost busters thing was kind of a half-hearted distraction. Kubo clearly wanted to mess with a more dramatic overarching plot, but I think what sunk it was his fixation on making these oversized villain teams and heirarchies. If he'd run the SS arc as a legit feudal japan thing with lords and retainers and probably an emperor, kind of like what he seemed to have going at the very very beginning, it might've had a better flow about it than the captain and lieutenant thing where everyone had an almost finite place on the power ladder that ultimately meant the moment one guy gets labeled as top, the rest of the fights lose their edge. If he'd kept more of a mystery to the strengths and powers of people it would've felt less monotonous as things went one. SS had the benefit of Aizen's reveal shaking things up just as the congaline of fights got stale, but HM and 1kBW just didn't have enough to keep them fresh so they each lost their novelty progressively quicker.

This. I never understood why people have fond memories of it, when it was pretty much the foundation that led to all the bad shit that came after. It completely fucked up the entire world making the after life just two small villages and having Ichigo become as powerful as the top shinigami after a week of training. Imagine if the second arc of One piece was Luffy having to save Nami from a yonkou, that's basically what Bleach did.
