The writing in the books is very meh although some characters are pretty compelling but it doesn't matter because the books will just be novelizations of the show from this point on, and the show has gotten dramatically worse after they surpassed the books.

The show is still good for grand spectacle scenes but the road to them is usually trite.

Naruto has themes of betrayal, death, abandonment, loneliness, depression, lack of talent, and self-immolation not to mention scenes of blood and death being constant throughout the series. Hell, they are literally trained as kids to carry out missions no matter the cost, never to show emotion, and to have an intention to kill all for the sake of the ruling leader of their kingdom and to make money for their village.
