It's explained in the LN that he lost sight of his original goal. Demons were fucked over completely in the past before he came to rule. He forged demon society together and then introduced improvements to society and other things based on what he had learned from an angel Emi's mom as a child. Afterwards the main problem was that the demons needed resources which meant they had to come into conflict with the humans over them.

In the end though he lost sight of things over how the war was going and how much the demons had been tormented and oppressed by the humans for so long so he wanted to punish the humans as much as possible too.

I remember it honestly being even worse than that, and I say that as an Emifag. The demons being forgiven thing actually didn't bother me and learning more about Emis mom was nice and whatnot, but the thing that killed this series for me was that fucking kid.

Not because of her personality or the fact that she forces a couple, but because the story becomes LASER FOCUSED on her. The other characters throw their personality and issues aside to suddenly care about this kid at all times. They constantly bring the kid up worrying about her, etc. The character development, plot, and interactions outside of her character (aka the stuff people loved about the anime) is brushed aside for an incredibly long time and its just a chore to read. I don't know if its true or baseless speculation, but it felt like author was one of those approaching middle aged people who desperately want a child of their own just turned the thing into their own personal fantasy instead of building upon the world that was already there.

Stories about raising a kid are fine as long as that was the original premise of the story. Maou, however, pulls the premise out of the left field and runs with it in a story where readers weren't tuned into that type of story.

I want to fuck buff demon Maou and human Maou. I love Emi. I don't mind them getting together.
