See, this actually sounds like an alright setup, but the Light-L rivalry can't be topped. It's one of the all-time greats of anime, and whatever alternate ending you come up with just won't be as satisfying as ending it with those two.

After killing L, Light slowly loses his insanity and makes up an imaginary L who he thinks is trying to catch him still until he loses his mind to the point he gets caught by his father.

I would make Teru Mikami the new enemy in the backhalf. Keep him as a kira worshiper, but by some twisted logic thinks he's destined to become the second kira after receiving a second death note and to do that he has to kill the first kira, so it becomes a race to see if either can find each other's identities while still killing people

Mello is a dindu nuffin good boy who doesn't know his father was a Mafia boss. Mello happens to own a death note as well (it isn't that unlikely that other humans with death notes exist), but doesn't use it to mass murder all criminals on the planet. He might not use it at all. He did not care much about Kira, until he killed his dad.
Then he goes full rage mode and flies to Japan to capture Kira (it is common knowledge that Kira is Japanese). From there he just has to look for people whose life spans he cannot see.

Well actually, this would make the plot boring, because he would kill Light as soon as he sees him. There wouldn't be anything witty or intelligent about it..
