I wouldn't say that, there's a good amount of brown characters that get taken seriously. You have To remember anime is a foreign media and while extremely diverse in terms of physical apperence, they still have to get that projection factor in.

That's the thing I hate about forced diversity in any media. If you're gonna make people different, then either make everyone different so no one stands out, or address the points of difference. It annoys me to no end when there's a token black/brown character, they're the only black/brown person in the universe, and somehow nobody addresses their black/brown-ness. Either use it, or don't.

You bring up some really good points anon. I suggest the reasoning behind the ambiguity of brown characters relates back to atheistic. The two main reasons why anime is all over the fucking place is because the design is so simple. If anime characters looked like actual assigns constantly how long do you think before they can't vary them anymore? It's to make it more interesting and appealing. This only increased once anime got popular around the world. Making characters your audience can associate themselves with makes it more enjoyable. Race and ethnicity is never explained upon because Japan is such a homogenous society. Their characters already cover every color scheme known to man, and with a large world audience, it makes sense they throw in a brown character to associate without really caring about their race to begin with.
