Since this didn't happen, it's clear that Gon's brain isn't affected by physical trauma. There isn't any direct evidence about starving your brain from oxygen, but if Morel can somehow hold his breath for 30 minutes with lungs that fit in his body and his brain is fine. It's safe to assume that Togashi just doesn't give a fuck about brain trauma. You're looking for proof that isn't there but there is the common sense that from all the fantastic things that hunters have done in the series that their bodies including their brains are not normal. Nah he begun writing the fight with O MY RUBBER NEN in mind from the beginning, so he clearly had no intention of killing him off just yet. That said he chose a really fucking weird way of doing it. I wasn't expecting Hisoka to die there because the fight came out of the blue during the setup chapters of a new arc so it made no sense to die there but it came across really forced despite it clearly being planned from the start. It makes perfect sense and works logically within the established rules and also doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere but the way it was written serves to undermine all that. It's just really oddly written.
