Why is anime called "anime" and manga called "manga"?

why are cartoons called "cartoons" and comics called "comics"? Why can't they just be called American anime and manga? What makes them so special that they get to have a special nomenclature? I'm just genuinely curious.

Fans naturally want to distance themselves from the word "cartoon" and its childlike image in the west. Same with "comic book".

It's ineffective, since outsiders see anime and manga as childlike too, but that's how the fans justify it.
