This OVA is actually better than the rest of the entire franchise by a significant margin.

The tv series was most likely shown during the day on tv, even then the non filler arcs were fairly brutal at times. The manga is less kid friendly as well.

The manga series included several chapters to a side story that he borrowed hiko's design from. It looks more similar to that.

Yeah there was a lot of love and care put into the OVAs, even Remembrance which I liked.

The live action movies are also literally god tier. Kenshins master is ultimate badass, and I'm glad he never interviewed in fights besides chibi Shinta. His name escapes me.

That's not the point retard. The anime was very "child friendly". Kinda like DB and DBZ, There was violence, but it was always slashes with no blood or inconsequential defeats.

The movie literally opens with OP's webm and makes you wonder if you're in the right movie.

Even nobuhiro watsuki said the ovas were too grimdark

I'm guilty. I was 13 when the movie came out and didn't see it until I was 14. I had only enjoyed the anime. I love Kenshin as the happy-go-lucky guy and the bright intro music that was uplifting. Kenshin had serious moments, and I always wondered just how bad he was. This movie made me jizz my brain.

These two extremes messed with me.

I thought it was well done. They make a really big deal in the series about how bloody the bakumatsu was and fighters are continually categorised as either bakumatsu veterans or meiji weaklings. It made sense that that arc was more brutal than the other arcs/anime.

I thought the first live action movie was good because I had zero expectations and it was a pretty cool over the top martial arts like movie. The other two were decent, but goddamn did they rape Sojiro's character and to a degree Aoshi's. I wish they made a 4th movie with Enishi, but it seemed they were satisfied with the Shishio arc.

It's incredible how this OVAs achieve beauty and poetry inside all that senseless bloodshed and death. Hope inside all that war and loss. Sadly there's nothing like that nowadays. There are anime with great production values, but they are gore porn in which despair is glorified and dignity is fruitless.
