This and Lain are probably the two best examples. Both are critical darlings of the West, but are almost totally forgotten in Japan. Moreso NHK: apparently the novels never charted in the charts, and the anime averaged less than a thousand discs sold per volume, which was very poor back in 2006, let alone now.

Im said that I don't like her art, but that doesn't strictly saying "I think its bad'. But going by what you said, it sounds like the art is meant to carry the game. Other components has got to raise in qualities to make it worth it. Otherwise commission drawings on /h/ is best use of her skills at this point.
