S1 was baby mode. Urobuchi chose fantasy tropes to ease people who are not familiar with wuxia or budaixi. Even the choice of simpler weapons that everyone knows was deliberate.
S2 is going to be much more advanced in terms of wuxia elements, we might even see some stronger Taoist/Buddhist themes as well.
