What defines an asspull?
>>
It's shit.
>>
>>160464041
When something gets the protagonist out of a situation with little or no mention of it before hand. Like when a super robot suit has a brand new function that gets the hero out of a desperate fight that he would have lost.

Something nobody in-universe sees coming.

Something convenient that drastically shifts the plot of something that is either
1. Not foreshadowed
2. Inconsistent with the works own logic

Gold Experience Requiem is anti-climatic but it's not an asspull because it has already been established that when the arrow pierces something, new abilities that fit the need of the user at the moment are manifested.

Star Platinum being able to time stop IS an asspull because the logic they use to justify it (Stands of the same type) is inconsistent with everything we know about Stands up to that point. Nor is the ability foreshadowed in any meaningful way

foreshadow
verb
gerund or present participle: foreshadowing
be a warning or indication of (a future event).
"other new measures are foreshadowed in the White Paper"
>>
>>160464041
When Lagann moved on its own after Simon called it and dug him out of that prison is a good example of an asspull.
No foreshadowing
Inconsistent with the established universe (spiral power comes from the user, not from the robot)
Literally never happens again, even when it would be useful (Kittan had to bring Simon him Gurren Lagann)

It's just that, a meme.
Hisoka vs Chrollo ended on a very anti-climatic note. The whole "Nen gets stronger after death" is sorta inherently designed for shit like that to happen when you realize it is basically an excuse to have characters be able to do stuff after being killed.

>An Asspull is a moment when the writers pull something out of thin air in a less-than-graceful narrative development, violating the Law of Conservation of Detail by dropping a plot-critical detail in the middle, or near the end of their narrative without Foreshadowing or dropping a Chekhov's Gun earlier on.

It's implied that Lagann is sentient to some degree several times.
Also by the way Simon treats him.
Lagann even throws Simon towards the Anti-Spiral in the second movie.

Asspull isn't necessarily a bad thing

Battle tendency Joseph jostar is the best JoJo and all he fucking does is use asspulls.
>>
>>160467881
I think it depends on how much effort the character puts in first before it happens and if its still a struggle even after the asspull.

You'd be surprised how survivable a headshot can be.

While we don't ever get shown the full scope of what Lagann really is, we know right from episode 1 that it's not a normal gunman. It's pretty obvious.

An asspull is when the solution to a problem is produced with a nonsensical explanation, as if it were made up on the spot or seemingly produced from the author's ass, hence the name.

It's different from a coincidence, which describes the solution to a problem that is unlikely and far-fetched but still possible given all available information. It's also different from a plot hole, in which the solution to the problem contradicts prior knowledge.

>>
>>160486348
I don't get it. Are you saying that because of the Odin parallels, him surviving getting shot through the eye (significantly different from just losing an eye, which is not fatal) is somehow not stupid?
>>
>>160486714
I'm saying that the parallel of Inaho's journey to "wisdom" means that whatever hangups you may have on your video game simulationism telling you that headshot=dead or cheating, that was not a bad piece of storytelling or a "cheat" on the audience.
>>
>>160486857
>video game simulationism telling you that headshot=dead or cheating
Ahh yes, because when people get shot in the head in real life the only complication they have is missing an eye. Only in video games is a getting domed deadly the majority of the time.

I don't get how that defines as an asspull, and isn't Golden Boy a comedy to start with?
>>
>>160489060

Anime is infamous for this, but it's probably because a) most Nips can't write for shit. b) the audience doesn't really care in the end as long as the rule of cool is in effect and c) the industry often doesn't allow for long term story planning.

Let's kill off a minor character with no ambiguity.
Two episodes lets revive that character, give it a gender-swap and shoehorn it into the identity of a major character.

I'd say it was there. DIO was using powers of other joestars, and 'moving fast' is the same as stopping time, it's just relative to the observer.
>>
>>160465044

To be fair in the real world reveals like this are desirable. Your opponent cannot counter you, but in reading a story is can feel contrived as fuck if it's above and beyond the current expectations of technology/power/magic/character limits.

I don't think contradicting prior knowledge is ALWAYS a bad thing. The info could come from a character that doesn't know the truth, or was lied to in the first place. Making the previous interactions of characters and the world (the rules of magic system etc) still work with the new information is what is best. It's like rewriting science, a law works for a while, until it doesn't in scenario X and needs a new rule to codify the results.

It adds to Joseph's cartoony nature, though, which makes him unique among the other Jojos. He can do shit like pickpocketing a dozen grenades onto a vampire without him noticing, or pulling his hand into his sleeve, when he's wearing a fucking tank top. And those are some his most memorable moments.

I think the difference is the intensity of the asspull. Most characters asspull by getting a power-up mid-battle or something mundane, but Joseph's asspulls are so ridiculous that I see them more as a joke than an actual moment in the story. Like for example, him predicting what people are gonna say. They hear him saying their next line, so there's no reason to repeat it (and prove him right), but they do it anyway because it's funny.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in this case it was:
>straight to the eye socket
>it took time to get him to a doctor, hell, there's even a scene where the girls are crying around Inaho and we get the aldnoah activation to save their asses and escape
>only one doctor was available and he was not a pro surgeon
>no advanced equipment available, just what they had on ship
>the bullet damaged/grazed his brain, they connected the robo eye to it later
Fucker should have died, his part in season 2 was useless and boring.

>>160464041
This is still forced drama rather than an asspull, because later it became known that Inaho wasn't supposed to get shot in episode 12, Aoki and Takayama added it to have a more exciting cliffhanger. An asspull might have been the retarded part with the robot eye taking control of Inaho and talking to the princess.
