I think they're just a more flexible and competent artist. Arc 1/3's mangaka seems noticeably less well-practiced, and I kind of doubt they'd be able to handle the humorous scenes as well.

Arc 2's could probably shift styles three times during Rem's death scene confession. Give it a proper tragic death scene look, switch it off to something goofy with the reveal, and then back into something serious as they talk afterward.

Alternate universe where Roswaal never picks up Emilia because the Royal Insignia reacted to Rem when he got it, and he decides to turn Rem into his puppet candidate instead and stuffs her into a Princess dress so she can look the part. Probably more competent than Emilia on the surface, but just going through the motions as she thinks Ram would be better for the job and has little to no personal investment in winning at the beginning. Also resents that she's been elevated above nee-sama and can't dress like her.

The other candidates likely wouldn't respect her much if she didn't really stand for anything, besides what Roswaal and Ram told her to stand for, and her personality quirks would probably result in either hesitant or rash decisions. Or just bizarre ones, when her professional mask slipped. She'd probably be completely stressed out by the whole situation.

Now, how would you introduce Subaru into this scenario?

Would be cool if Rem became a candidate later on because of she's the last Oni or because of some contest and then had to leave the Emilia faction to be able to participate in the selection.
