Anyways, the three year time gap made me think of Akane and Junpei in 999 quite a bit. It's probably in other stuff too, that's just what came to mind.

Glad it had a happy ending. It's one of the reasons I can't watch 5cm and Garden of Words more than once because I know the ending is either straight up heartbreaking or bittersweet. I do feel a bit bad for Shinkai though. This movie has put a lot of pressure on him, more than he can handle considering his responses to the this movie's success.

Somebody said that the best option for subs is to run the movie with the subs linked here: https://mega.nz/#!5wVGEDQR!_yNtAI1BtG7picUa041eY8vDN_qu_BK8YUgcbbgu3vk

Nii-sama is the most faithful, kuchikirukia - official with honorifics. Generally you can go even with official subs, because key parts were handled pretty well (especially for funimation), bud don't use anything with liberal edits like this one which you mentioned if you don't want to ruin your experience and chance to understand deeper parts of this movie.

See above if you're going to recommend the same subs as that faggot. Heck, Sayaka's name is even translated as Sayachin when she's called that way.. Gender-specific shit isn't even a problem if you already know the difference in the first place. Seeing (ore), or (boku) in the subs is just annoying to the eyes.

First of all - typesetting is the least important thing. Font color is a personal preference. I like colored fonts. Also font style is actually great and much more readable on big screens.
And about the last part - completely replacing original text is retarded.
Personally, I watched official subs, and it was perfectly fine, except the part where they swapped names with last names. Typesetting doesn't matter if translation is edited for shitty normalfags.
>>
>>160453953
Because its better to be lazy and do that rather than have actual typesetting. But its ok because it uses honorifics.

>Typesetting doesn't matter if translation is edited for shitty normalfags.
Please show me where they did that. Or are you going to bitch about honorifics again?
Because this entire part is totally edited for shitty normalfags, right?

I'd admit that I more or less overreacted and that he actually improved the font style by using darker borders but you're totally fucking retarded if you're going to dismiss another option just because it doesn't use honorifics or whatever nitpicks you have. If you already know a bit of japanese, subs are just there to establish context and dialogue you don't understand. Going full literal with your translations is more pandering to shitters with low powerlevels who can't distinguish jp pronouns from each other.

What gets me more is when they translate onee-san as Mitsuha. Like in the beginning of the movie when Taki is in her body for the first time and the imouto walks in on her, she says onee-san. While it's pretty obvious who Taki is in, Taki doesn't necessarily know who he is supposed to be right then, so it's misrepresenting information the character does not have.

My v3 has been released. It now has MTBB with honorifics and most of the localized "dialect" reverted to retail, as well as the insert lyrics deleted. The official subs don't translate some background lines. I was wondering what they said when I was watching in theaters. I'm not sure if Nii-sama added those in or not.

But mostly I'm referring to not translating "ore," "watashi," etc. in one specific scene, and also sort of half-translating the whole kataware-doki thing.

I see it the other way. He takes the everyday familiar sights and makes them beautiful. I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago and those sardine trains were no joke. Think of the urban blues the nips have day after day as they go to work. Maybe that's why Shinkai has such a following even though the stories are hit-or-miss, because he treats city sights with as much loving care and detail as he does with scenes of nature.

This is anime after all, escapism and projections are almost a requirement. I often see people complaining about Summer Wars for its heavy nostalgia but they probably don't know that Hosoda based the family dynamics and summer imagery on his own experiences with his wife's extended family.
>>

>I thought the point of the scene where she shows up with her child is that a new life was born from the two lives he saved
It probably is with rational hindsight, but /a/ was thinking with their cocks when it first aired. Also MC's tears.

It's mostly just an aesthetic thing. His anime always seems to be saccharine and overly sentimental to me and it is reflected in the style of the art. The kinds of colouring he chooses especially. It's like the chocolate box art of anime to me.
>>
>>160461618
The issue people had with it was that it wasn't like he was missing or dead, or like this movie where they forgot each other. He was in a coma and she knew that, and knew where he was.

At least she has experience in moving into the Tokyo setting. Plus word of god is that she got into the fashion business thanks to her maiden experience in thread-weaving (as shown by her fixing sempai's skirt), so she's doing pretty well for herself while still remaining pure for Taki.

I mean, you could just as easily make it a stroy where she really did die and he can't do shit about it.
But why would you? For one, it would be a punch in the guts. And going all "Yes, you can lose your loved ones to a natural disaster. Dea with it." with an ending quote being some sort of "Shou ga nai." in a country where a lot of people live through this shit and whom can't be helped by Shinto priests?

It's equally shitty if you live in the sticks though, especially where I grew up where the average age of the population is 60+ and the highlight in terms of connecting with the outside world was the library and the big supermarket chains that stocked video games, usually a couple of months late so you had to drive for an hour to get the things you wanted. This was in the 90s and before amazon, so it's probably very different today, but I'd rather shoot for a compromise between a big city and the countryside, which there are plenty, at least in Europe.

I think that is a fair enough attitude to have to be honest. Things that are too realistic or a downer I find I need to be in the right mood to watch and enjoy. Tings that are light and fluffy or comedic or fantastical are fine almost anytime. I was thinking of watching this a third time now the BD is out after watching twice in cinemas but even the amount of "feelings" in this film even though it all turns out fine make the thought of watching it tiring.

I was thinking of getting one printed since my theater was too jewish to give me theirs, but the best I've found so far from searching is a replication with a slightly different resolution and missing the right-hand text. Not really, we'd question the point of the next few episodes and instantly arrive at the conclusion that we'd get a happy ending where Taki saves everything. A movie format was perfect since it let us take the story in all at once instead of leaving us to speculate on a plot that's surprisingly predictable if seen in a serial format.

They did a pretty bad job at the starting scene going straight from Mitsuha (Taki) looking into the mirror to Mitsuha (Mitsuha) eating breakfast with her family. I thought for sure that was Taki in Mitsuha's body and the two scenes were just a few minutes apart and it took a while until I realized that was a day later. Should have used more of an emphasized transition rather than such a smooth cut between the two days.

Which part would you drag to get the extra 3 or so hours worth of footage for a 12-episode series? The first half of the movie is entertaining enough because of the visuals and the music but you wouldn't want to watch that for two hours, and when it actually gets intense, it only does because the pacing is as fast as it is.
>>
>>160485699
It happened when Taki was Mitsuha, you can tell by much simpler hairstyle that Taki uses. He probably wrote about it in the journal and Mitsuha read it later. Mitsuha could have also heard about it the next day from other classmates.

This film was fucking clever as shit. I was 100% sure that the comet was a magical fairy dust thingamajig, and that Mitsuha and Taki seeing it at the same time at the start of the film was the part which kickstarted the bodyswapping schenanigans. In reality the comet was just a physical object which was STILL important to the plot and the real thing that started the magic was Mitsuha's yearning to become a handsome boy living in Tokyo.

Actually, those ages may not be correct. In the Q&A someone asked if Shinkai had decided on birthdays for them and Shinkai replied that he hadn't really decided on their birthdays or blood types but he likes to think that they were both born on December 1st.

So under that information if they were both 17 in October when body swapping then Mitsuha would have been 26 and Taki 23 when they meet.

Mitsuha was an actual cake.

Well, they might have also gotten that line from the Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Or, you know, one of the millions of times that phrase has been written or spoken in English.
>>
>>160484510
The 3D backgrounds were weird, I don't really know what they were going for. Characters looked a million times better than KNNW or KNK though
>>
>>160493699
I haven't really followed this movie until the BD came out. But this is the first time I seen "what's your name", but to be fair i mostly skim through the posts/threads about it to avoid spoilers

>Characters looked a million
Maybe animation (in some parts), but Kizumono is using the worst character design from all Monogatari seasons.
Also Characters in KNNW looks great, definitely the best from all Shinkai's movies. And I also prefer this style > new monogatari style.

All of them.

What, exactly, is the problem with "What's your name?"?
>>
>>160487186
>comet was a magical fairy dust thingamajig
This never occurred to me, but in hindsight it's a pretty logical conclusion.

Thanks for not autistically screeching just because someone liked something you didn't. We need more like you.
>>

If you don't point out flaws how can you ever improve?
>>
Just watched it on an airplane. Pretty took look at with lots of comfy places. But man, that was a stupid story.
>>
>>160495059
are you the one on the 10 hour long trip
>>
>>160493980
Because they're faggots who want the line to be the same as the name of the film even though it isn't even that in Japanese.
>>
>>160495097
I was on a 10 hour trip, yeah. From Japan to Finland.
>>
>>160495121
But it's basically the same as the official subs.

"What's your name?" -- self-indulgent fuckery
"Your name is...?" Completely accurate, totally true to the Japanese.

Or am I misunderstanding?
>>
>>160495191
>"Your name is...?"

A very unnatural sounding phrase nobody ever uses in English

>kimi no namae wa"

The only fucking way to ask that question in Japanese, aside from longer, more polite forms. Translating that as anything but "What's your name?" is retarded.
>>
>>160495121
Not sure what you're saying.

I mean, technically in a literal translation 君の名前は is just "Your name?" because it lacks a です form, the rising intonation makes it a question despite lacking the か, basically the same as how we pronounce our questions in English.

While "Your name is...?" is fine in some cases it's not really something you would use when two people who don't know each other meet.

However, two people saying "What's your name?" at the same time sounds autistic, so you don't win there either.
>>
>>160495298
>A very unnatural sounding phrase nobody ever uses in English
People use it in English all the time, but in particular circumstances.

For example, if there is a Q&A or audience interaction the audience member will often be prompted with "Your name is?". Or you might try call a business and ask to talk to someone or leave a message and get prompted "And your name is?".

The thing is that it's a prompt. You usually wouldn't walk up to someone and say "Your name is?" if you were trying to start a conversation with them or trying to get to know them.
>>
>>160495465
Technically the literal translation is that, yeah, but translations aren't supposed to convey the literal meaning of each individual word, they are supposed to convey the overall message as accurately as possible, which is usually different from translating everything word-for-word, or even line-for-line for that matter.

>>160495602
Yeah, I guess you're more correct than I was.

It's a fucking overhype shit tho
>>

>>
>>160495121
Bit it is exactly the same like Japanese. 君の名前は is actually a question.
>>
>>160496651
It is a question, but it is not the name of the movie. The name of the movie is 君の名は.
>>
>>160496814
They have the same meaning anyway.
>>
>>160496814
But the last sentence of the movie is 君の名前は, not 君の名は

I feel rused and I'm not even sure why
>>
>>160496814
So are you saying that 名前 is functionally different than 名 in this situation? If so, how is it?
>>
>>160496894
Indeed. So they're different, so there is no need to make them match in English.

>>160496959
It's not functionally different, but it's superficially different. So it doesn't matter if they don't match in the translation.
>>
>>160496959
I think that this question with 名 is just shorter version. Japanese people loves shortenings and all kind of abbreviations. But I've never herd this in real life.
>>
This entire discussion is just convincing me that people who are getting triggered by "What's your name?" are ESL or autistic or both.
>>
>>160497037
名 is used in the title so that it can play on sounding like 縄. Japanese love double meanings, they use them all the time.

But it is pretty unusual to actually hear someone use 名 in a spoken sentence, except in playing on the movie title (the frequency of use of 君の名は certainly peaked during and shortly after the movie was screening).

little late to these threads, but whats the deal with the bd subs, are the succ subs really that bad.

they are fine as it is

Wow. I didn't guess that, you are right!
>>
>>160497362
They're fine if you aren't some autistic that considers fansubs to be the pinnacle of translating perfection.
>>
>>160497362
They are the official subs and the same as the ones shown in theaters and the earlier webrip.
>>
>>160497362
They're fine, but save some bandwidth and get [Beatrice-Raws], it has the subs and is higher quality (cause filtering).
