There aren't simply catgirls and human girls, OP. It's a continuum.

I don't see that many catgirls with four ears, though it does happen, I guess on those cases the artists just don't really think about it from an anatomical point of view, they just draw a pair of animal ears on the head and call it a day.

There's a reason why they always have the hair covering the sides of the head if they don't have ears there. It's unsettling to see a human head missing features such as ears.

After reading what >>160435178 said about it being displeasing and seeing this picture, I can conclude that catgirls have human ears and cat ears, however, the cat ears must be either not able to hear (so their growths) or they have poor hearing capability because having four-way hearing would be nightmarish especially for headphones unless the catgirls have special plugs for their sensitive ears. But very good points that change my way of thinking about them.

Two sets of ears just looks off, though to be honest ears like these make more sense in a way. It's either animal ears on the top or animal ears on the side. Having human ears is dumb as fuck on them.

I wish more anime would follow what Dog Days or Utawarerumono did.

With Dog Days, they just completely lack human ears, as in the reference image. The creator even enforced the rule of no human ears.

And Utawarerumono just has them in place of the human ears, which is also good.

most of the time it is implied that the technique is used to make the character less jarring in appeareance as it is human nature to see the lack of human ears a glaring flaw in evolution and as such they would deem the character not cute if they saw them without.

as a general rule of thumb Moe archetypes just have animal ears as accessories meanwhile serious characters have them as actual functional ears and DO NOT have anything else under the hair that is however hidden to avoid potential visual displeasure

Not true for the first season. Second season, I do have to unfortunately agree with you.

When the cat ears are on top of the head you can either see the human ears or their hair covers where they would be.

They have to do this because it would just look plain wrong if you could see where their human ears should be and they were missing.

Two animal ears is all that's necessary. Keep the human ears and they might as well be cosplaying.
It's one of the reasons I couldn't really enjoy Kemono Friends despite almost directly pandering to me.
