Maybe he didn't even have family and got his powers by sacrificing some random due on the street. I mean that one Apostle sacrificed his heretic wife he was about to kill anyway and it worked.
Could be an interesting to see what someone without proper sacrifice has to do.

I always suspected the main trait of the apostle generals, and that would help to explain their more benign disposition would be that their precious sacrifices were voluntary, unlike most other situations. That'd help to not steal away all their humanity, and reinforce their resolution in their apostlehood in a more virtuous way. Consequently they'd distinguish themselves.
Grunbeld in the novel seems to have been that way according to some short summaries.

She wasn't that bad desu, the worst thing she did was allowing her underlings to kill each other and you could argue this was more their fault then hers.
The worst things she did to humans was to kidnap their children which she fought to be a good thing and killing their livestock, but as a stupid kid she probably didn't even think about starving people and just wanted somethign to eat.
If she had proper guidance she'd be a nice girl.

Guts is actually not human wholly he's a rape child possibly of elves or some apostle like being. Only the edgiest dark gruesome battlefields are home to the supernatural and makes sense for men to get hanged off trees but women would get raped and doubt they'd take time to hang them up all afterwards unless they're some kind of indigenous tribe
