Guys post some wallpapers, i wanna make a set but this all i got so far.
>you will never drink Mitsuha's bottled saliva
Someone upload a webm comparing the differences between Mitsuha first writing her name on Taki and when she went to write it on the crater.
>yfw you realize she was also going to write "I love you"
I WANT TO _________ MITSUHA
>>160421709
Shinkai maintains it is supposed to be ambiguous.
>>160421584
Post this every thread if you want, no one cares.
Running through the town could just be homage, rolling after tripping is similar, but they trip for different reasons, the girl rolls a lot further in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time if I remember correctly, and it is completely understandable that Mitsuha would roll after tripping on a slope because she was fucking exhausted after running up and down a mountain, and then running around the lake.
>you cant have your female character trip over and roll because another movie had a female character trip over and roll!
>>160421956forget
Your Name‘s complete production schedule, from the pitch to its launch. As you can see, Shinkai wasn’t kidding when he said he was still working on the film 3 days before its Anime Expo world premiere.
>>160421652
Perfect if you have two monitors.
Threadly reminder that Mitsuha has no sense of direction and where they meet up makes little sense.
Taki was probably on the Chuo Rapid which passes Sendagaya and Yoyogi to stop at Shinjuku, Mitsuha must have been on the Chuo/Sobu Local that stops at every station, but also goes to Shinjuku.
So why she felt the need to get off instead of him just waiting at probably THE SAME PLATFORM, I dunno, but even more perplexing is why they felt the need to run all the way over there, any why Mitsuha must have crossed the tracks THREE TIMES.
But at least it looks nice.
>>160421584
You forgot the obvious Keit-Ai
>>160421652
I'll post a series of stills and stuff
>>160422822
So what release is the best? I'd prefer not have to download all 25gb of the SUCC remux with my snail internet.
>>160422877
Give me another hour. MTBB seems to have the only signs but their subs are terrible. I'm replacing a lot with the retail and adding an honorifics track for those who want their onee-chan and senpai.
I don't think I could ever watch this because the amount of secondhand embarrassment I'd receive from awkward situations, misunderstandings, and doing stupid shit while they switched would overwhelm me in a matter of minutes.
A shame, really. I really wanted to enjoy this too.
>>160422983
Do you think three years is long enough to fill up a crater like that?
Remember, the second (third) is larger than the first (+second), so it's not like it just needed twice the water volume of the original lake, it would have needed three or four times as much, and they're fairly high up so it's not like they have rivers feeding into it.
I want to make love to Mitsuha!
>>160423084
There really isn't any of that.
>>160423094
Lake levels can change pretty drastically over the course of a few years of sustained drought or heavy rain/snowfall, but I'm not sure.
>>160422910
Nice thanks for these man. Keep em comiing, would be nice if people could drop some official/promo art as well.
>>160423167
From the preview when the dude wakes up in the girls body, grabs "her" breast, and her sister notices and then runs downstairs. That isn't so bad, but it hinted at more of that kinda shit.
>>160423209
Nope.
>>160423209
What little is there is pretty innocent and isn't lingered on much.
>>160423084
I get pretty bad secondhand embarrassment from a lot of shows, with shows such as Watamote being completely unwatchable. Kimi no wa was fine for me for the most part though.
God I hope nobody ever looks at this sign I made. I have no idea how to do these colored boxes to cover text so I just made a dozen in all weird shapes and just fit them together.
>>160423172
Lakes are generally formed by and controlled by river flows though, this is an impact crater.
>>160423209
take it from the cringe master, theres barely none of that all bro. youll be fine.
>>160423311
Wait a minute, I'll get you some material to study.
>>160421584
We already proved that video is extremely misleading. The only consecutive shots are from 0:08 to 0:23, so we got 15 seconds. The trip isn't even from that same movie.
>tried tasting 3 different types of sake today

No, I agree that there's a lot in common, and that particular downhill sequence is almost shot-for-shot remade, this is undeniable. But it's so blatant that it feels like a homage of sorts, I don't doubt Okiura's ability to come up with great scenes independently.
That said, don't forget that Nijiro Hotaru was just a rip-off of Harukana Machi e, the Taniguchi manga. So yeah, no anime is that original. Why does it matter when people copy shit? No idea has been new since the Greeks.

What's crazy is that this is a beautiful painting, but then you watch the movie and it's fucking moving. It's literally "every frame a painting", it's wonderful.
Finally a Makoto Shinkai film that isn't horribly fucking depressing.
>>160423571
Just download k-lite standard
>>160423572
The informal shortening of words doesn't read well. 'bout, twinnin', etc. It's all over the place.
And I don't speak Japanese but somehow I really doubt they used "catfishing."
>>160423666
>Tessie and Sayaka freak out when they see her short hair
>Taki can barely utter a compliment
Too bad no one liked her short hair.
>>160423722
>What's crazy is that this is a beautiful painting, but then you watch the movie and it's fucking moving. It's literally "every frame a painting", it's wonderful.
It's one of the best things about the movie, you can take a still in so many places and you've got something that wouldn't be out of place on a wall.
What sub is best? There's so many
>>160421584
Movies about time travel and Shinto are going to be successful obviously.
>>160423729
Garden of Words had a nice/hopeful ending imo. Wish there was more but even Shinkai was suprised how popular and well received the movie was.
Didnt it went straight to DVD?
>>160423803
>>160423722
Not actually painted. All Shinkai backgrounds, as pretty as they are, are traced from pictures via photoshop. It's a very efficient process, but nothing is hand-drawn here.
>>160423803
Though I do really like the hand-drawn quality of the vision of Mitsuha's life that Taki had.
The girl was 3 years older than the guy and the guy is going to get oneesan cunny and goodboygoodboys when they get married
So should i just say fuck it download the 25gb remux, my net is quite good today or are their better alternatives?
>>160423878
CHD and mine are both near perfect.
>>160423837
I don't remember watching Garden of Words, but Your Name actually came out in theaters here.
>>160423863
yeah I figured as much, the result is outstanding
>>160423873
I love that, considering they were already pressed for time I don't think we'd ever get a movie hand drawn with the quality pf Shinkai.
>>160423878
The 25GB one is very nice, but I've got the HDD space because I just added another 2TB drive recently.
>>160423874
Yeah surprised me when i realized shes older. Makes the train scene where shes blushing and getting flustered over a 14 year old Taki while shes 17 cuter.
Even better that a cake finnaly wins.
>>160423878
If your net is good and you got space just get the remux bruh, its great. I downloaded in 2 hours and its fucking amazing.
>>160423505
What media player are you using?
>>160423960
I mean given a few years they'll be pretty much the same. Even though it was crazy cute.
Also the fact that Taki was 14 in the body of Mitsuha, the guy had a ton of self control
>>160423733
Well, as you can probably guess, the shortening is just a reflection of the dialect of the characters. It's an important plot point that one set of characters (non-Tokyo) talks way differently than another set (Tokyo). It's mentioned twice in the script explicitly So maybe I went overboard, but that's the reason behind it.
As to catfished, c'mon, man--it's a term to refer to a specific thing, and the characters are worried about that very thing happening to Taki. When you say that you don't think Japanese people would use the term, what do you mean, exactly?
>>160423778
I don't get it, it was her best look, which is saying something because long hair teen and adult Mitsuha also look good
>>160424042
Actually nevermind, realized it was twice the size
>>160424046
No, Taki was 17. They were three years apart.
>>160424108
oh shit you're right. Fuck the time thing still messes with me.
>>160424088
I still kind of dislike how Taki reacted there. He just found someone he used to swap bodies with who was fucking dead and went through the fucking underworld to get to her and he's just fucking staring at her. He needed some more emotion. This scene is really the only critique of the movie I have
>>160421518
Yeah, it's almost a year after but I'm watchin' it next week in theaters for only 3 bucks fuckers! I fuckin' love 3rd world!
>>160421584
Have you watched any of these movies or are you just shitposting?
>>160424046
>I mean given a few years they'll be pretty much the same. Even though it was crazy cute.
yeah i know, just me surprised is all.
>Also the fact that Taki was 14 in the body of Mitsuha, the guy had a ton of self control
hes was 17, when he bodyswaps with Mitsuha he goes back in time remember and vice versa when its the opposite. Hes 14 when her timelines, Mitsuha goes to Tokyo to meet him.
Its why they are the same height on the train(3 years ago) but at the crater he towers over her(3 years in the future both of them 17 here).
>already 25, still trying to learn a language and save up enough money to travel
>life is going by faster and I want to find someone to share it with before it disappears
this movie motivated me but holy fuck I have this creeping sense of anxiety now
>>160424216
ignore him, it's keit-ai 2.0
>>160424167
I was a little disappointed too. He was the one who went so far out of his way to find her, and when they finally met she was the one who was really emotional and happy to see him while he was trying to play it cool or some shit.
>>160424250
not even that, he acted like he was dreaming. I definitely feel like this is a part of the movie Shinkai would redo
>>160423960
newfag question, what do you mean by 'cake'?
>>160424175
>I fuckin' love 3rd world!
Are you okay flipfriend?
>>160424171
I legit thought the movie was gonna there(thanks to shinkai bittersweet bs), i went into this blind and watched in theaters last year.
People called the ending a bit disappointing but to them actually acknowledging one another and the title dropped made me love the movie in more. People even cheered after that scene. Good on him for wanting to make a more happier ending.
>>160424282
The bit right before it when they're both running along the rim of the crater calling to each other while the sun sets is actually my favorite in the movie. The really subtle music and the way the light was animated were just perfect.
>>160424088
I just wish they'd show the first day of bedhead Mitsuha(Taki) shenanigans
>>160424315
Not sure, I'm assuming he's either referring to Mitsuha or the couple themselves getting a happy ending. Knowing the creator he is also ruthless with giving sad endings. Part of the reason I was on the edge of my seat hoping they'd get together, cause I knew the creator was totally capable of crushing my soul and not having them meet
>>160424371
The twist reveal and the pen drop scenes were the emotional highlights for me. I felt physical pain and was brought to tears from those.
Taki crying with her breasts was a hilarious subversion of the trope though, side cute moment for me
>>160424088
My opinions vary.
>Short-haired Mitsuha didn't suit Taki at all.
>Short-haired broken-hearted Mitsuha something just felt off.
>Short-haired Mitsuha meeting Taki on the crater/reading her palm was precious and needed protecting.
>Short-haired panicked yet determined Mitsuha running through and evacuating Itomori was alright.
On other hand Braided Mitsuha, Ponytail Mitsuha and Cake Mitsuha were 10/10's all of the time.
>>160424335
I would've hated it if the movie ended there. I think the moment it did end on was just right because it hits a hopeful note without being overly saccharine. They find each other, but we don't get to see if they understand or remember why they recognize each other.
>>160424167
The emotion already happened for Taki, during the boobs crying scene. He'd been in all-business mode since then, trying to save the town, while Mitsuha had just literally died and revived. So I can understand the difference in emotion.
>>160424451
basically he gives the audience what they want most, they get together, and then leave the rest up to their imagination
>>160424480
I never considered him just being burnt out
>>160424410

i liked it. I felt it fit perfectly. He knew a way to save her, he had a plan. Giving how punctual he is. While she technically didn't understand what is happening and was just happy they could finally meet.

>>160424167
>I still kind of dislike how Taki reacted there.
I think it's fine. Part of the tension goes when he first wakes up in her body (don't forget that!) but the rest fades and he calms down when he finally sees her face to face.
>>160422436
Nah, the clouds
>>160424315
Because anime is generally teen-centric and a lot of its fans are underage, there's a trope that any female character 25 or older is suddenly some kind of old hag with no value anymore.
>>160424768
Such a woman is referred to as a "cake" because like a Christmas cake, it has no purpose after the 25th.

I saw some people talking about downloading the remux earlier i the thread... it's NEVER worth it to download remuxes (something like Reinforce is going to be basically identical), especially if there are competent encoders doing releases w/ scene filtering (like Beatrice-Raws).

It goes beyond that. At least two weeks passed after the body swapping stopped to the point that he started to forgetting her. He then had to deal with the shock of realizing she was already dead and then after that he had to hike in the mountains in the rain on the faint hope of meeting her only to witness first hand her life and final moments. Cut to him waking up in her body and then he has to try spend the whole day trying concoct a plan to evacuate the town and save everyone while also trying to deal with her asshole father. He then suffers a crisis in realizing despite being the only one who knows what'll happen to the town, it has to be Mitsuha to convince her father. THEN the motherfucking has a to ride up the same fucking mountain and remembers that the girl he's trying to meet actually went out of her way to meet him three fucking years ago. Taki suffered a whole load of shit to just to see her but in the end I felt that calm, tranquil catharsis was a fitting reaction for that meeting.
>>160424480
>while Mitsuha had just literally died and revived
Don't forget that for her, just yesterday she went to Tokyo, walked around aimlessly for a whole day, met the boy she liked only for him to bluntly ask her "DARE OMAE?"

Kuchikamizake ad?
I liked it a lot better than Koe no Katachi. Don't see what the big deal about that movie was. Different strokes for different folks I guess and I'm sure people think the same thing about this movie.
Amnesia happened and the messages on the smartphone disappeared when the story needed that. Am I correct here?
>>160425479
Mitsuha for sure. Taki was just some guy, he wasn't really upset with his life or anything. Mitsuha on the other hand didn't like where and who she was, then gets blown up by a meteor, then gets to survive and watch her home get blown up by a meteor. That's on top of her mother being dead and her father leaving, both of which are kind of a big deal.
>>160426095
>smartphone disappeared
This is the one thing that really drives me crazy about the movie because you can explain most everything about their memory loss as their perception of living in the other's body as being a hazy dream the next morning. However, there's no in-universe reason (aside from magic, which is the real answer, and also implies a tech-savvy asshole of a god) for why the phone memory would be cleared. Everything the other did when in the other's body physically happened and had physical consequences. I don't recall any other point in the movie where something physically Back to the Future disappears and it really rubs me the wrong way.
It happens for purely meta reasons. It's happens so that they are guaranteed to forget the names of the other, and make it difficult to find each other in the future, and make the name of the movie work
>>160426093

Your Name is more of a crowd pleaser so of course its going to resonate with people looking for a spectacle than anything substantial. Silent Voice has a subject matter that some might not find appealing and the fact that its a condense adaptation. I'll say that Silent Voice felt more like a film than Your Name which felt like a made for TV special (it even has a fucking opening)

Eh, that's a stretch. Taki was certainly less melodramatic, but he's not Seiji from Mimi wo Sumaseba or Haku from Spirited Away. He had a personality, flaws, and his own conflicts. That's pretty impressive for a movie like this, to split attention between its leads so cleanly.
That said, Mitsuha was a total bitch too. Like, actually a bad person at times, crashing a date uninvited. Acting like a jealous black woman.
>>160426520
>make the name of the movie work
BTW. Why didn't they try to communicate by phone? Mitsuha could have written her number on a piece of paper in Taki's room. Or Taki, in Mitsuha's body, could have sent a text message to his number. Answer: They would have found out that they were living in different times.
>>160426094
>>160426621
Being a crowd pleaser doesn't mean it can't be substantial, I'd argue that despite its flaws, KNNW had a lot more to say of note than Koe no Katachi or Kono Sekai. That's not to defend its quality or anything, but it certainly wasn't any less ambitious for being easily digestable. Look through history, some of the most thematic and movies with the most important message to get across were also wildly popular. Shit like Triumph of the Will had to be lucid, otherwise the point doesn't get across.
Wait, so did it imply that Mitsuha's grandma had a body switched with someone too?
>>160426912
>crashing a date uninvited

>I'll say that Silent Voice felt more like a film than Your Name which felt like a made for TV special
I'd say the complete opposite. (Silent Voice had an opening too, or did you forget My Generation. inb4 openings must have future scenes from the episode/series/movie in it).
Films need to be a spectacle, that's how you bring people into the box office. Silent Voice was an important story but it was in the wrong format.
>>160426996
Taki had her number, so it's not unreasonable to think she had his number as well and possibly tried calling him at some point. When she went to Tokyo it would have made a lot of sense for her to try, even if it's not shown.
It's easy to explain why it wouldn't work if Taki didn't have his phone number yet. People changing numbers is hardly a stretch.
>>160423729
honestly that last scene on the staircase I was getting fucking furious because I thought we were going to get an ending closer to 5 cm/s where they pass each other and you need to live with it.
>>160426996
>Why didn't they try to communicate by phone?
They did. You should gather this from Taki and Mitsuha having each other's numbers (Taki tries to call her when he is on the bridge after the failed date, Mitsuha tries to call him when she is on the bridge trying to find him. Clearly Mitsuha's phone was destroyed in the impact and Taki must have had a different number three years before).
But in the LN it is straight out stated at the beginning of the montage that because calls/texts wouldn't go through they decided to keep diaries.
>>160423837
You saw the GoW ending coming. 5cm/s was scarring although it was hinted at as well. I think the studio made him make your name with the happy buttoned up ending. Fucking loved it though, got so warm and fuzzy in the theater.
>>160427207
It was his morning ritual every time he woke up as her. I'm sure that after they got together, she woke up every morning to him copping a feel as well.

Pottery.
>>160427334
>I think the studio made him make your name with the happy buttoned up ending.
Maybe, but remember they decided on the ending scene first.
The studio could have told him to make a story with a happy ending, but don't buy into the "originally it was going to have an ending when they didn't meet but they changed it later" idea.
>>160427411
I'd honestly be fucking devastated if they never met.
>>160427228
> it would have made a lot of sense for her to try, even if it's not shown
>>160427355
>>160427285
Well I feel stupid now. Can't believe I forgot that. She actually tries to call him multiple times.
>>160426520
There's also no in-universe reason as to why they switch bodies (aside from magic). Drives me crazy.
Didnt like the last 30 mins much. Too rushed
>>160427037
>Being a crowd pleaser doesn't mean it can't be substantial
There's not a whole lot to digest to begin with. Part of the reason why it was so successful because its a relatively simple story. Its fun to look into it because there's key details throughout the film that makes it seem more than what it actually is but there won't really enhance the experience just neat trinkets you wouldn't have caught the first time.
>I'd argue that despite its flaws, KNNW had a lot more to say of note than Koe no Katachi or Kono Sekai.
I strongly disagree the plot in KNNW is much weaker than those films and gets bogged down by exposition where it doesn't really need it, the biggest praise I can muster for it is that its functional (contrivances aside) and unlike say Hosoda films it doesn't run off a cliff in the third act also way too fucking Disneyesque for its own good (at least they didn't fucking kiss) to the point where it felt like I was watching a Disney Channel movie. The film's success can be attributed to having so many elements that work for it than against it and having a universally appealing story but there's not a lot to it.
>>160427411
Absolutely, though at the time I was even dreading an ambiguous but slightly positive ending. I'm probably only saying that because the ending I saw. I couldn't now imagine it any other way. No stupid montage afterward including courtship and wedding, but not ending with each other looking on the stairs. I think it was done well.

It basically needed to be rushed. There was a time limit they were fighting against. If there is no urgency in the pacing then you can end up with things like the five minutes until Namek explodes.
>>160427209
>Silent Voice had an opening too, or did you forget My Generation. inb4 openings must have future scenes from the episode/series/movie in it
That's not the same thing, A Silent Voice opened with a montage played in the drapt of a classic rock song which is the standard procedure for most drama live action films, Your Name's opening is literal fucking anime opening that gives away the plot.

You're right. I didn't pay enough attention apparently when I watched it. The call attempts happened late in the film, right?

Did they attempt to call each other multiple times and still didn't think this was weird?
>>160427209
>Silent Voice was an important story but it was in the wrong format.
The source of material is not that long or dense to begin with. People need to understand that a good adaptation does not mean it needs to cover the length for it it just needs to convey the the message the author is trying to make to another format. A Silent Voice TV series would have been far too slow.
Whoa.. so this is the power of Shinkai!
No wonder Koe no Katachi lost...
>>160425123
>>160427491
>taking the bait
Yeah, I know.
Of course, but that's the whole premise of the movie. It's also internally consistent with the one big exception being when Taki drinks the miko juice and goes back to a misaligned date which also triggers Mizuha's last moment of consciousness to take his place at that point. Everything about that scene and swap can be explained with the sake and its significance to both Mizuha and their shrine god.
The phone memory erasing is the only thing in the movie that has no precedent, doesn't happen again, and doesn't have a good explanation, especially when it's been shown that they are affecting each others lives in very real and permanent ways. It requires what seems like a conscious decision, presumably the same shrine god, that actively works against the characters in a way that's inconsistent with all other "guiding hand" decisions such as specifically deciding when the swaps happen to coincide with things that would be important later on (such as Taki being there for the day when they put the sake in the shrine).
>>160427835
>>160427641

I think you mean more needlessly convoluted. The more you actually think about the plot in Your Name the more inconsistencies you'll find but the love story and visuals distract you from thinking about it.

Maybe trivia. Yotsuya Station, where Mitsuha gets off and gives Taki the rope is the closest station on that line (the same line they were on when they spot each other again at the end) to the stairs they meet at, from the station exits.
Maybe there is significance in that, maybe not. It's so close to Shinanomachi as well that there's basically nothing in it.
But she got on at Yoyogi, so they went through Sendagaya and Shinanomachi before getting to Yotsuya. So she stood around for at least two stops before raising her voice.
>>160427758
>Did they attempt to call each other multiple times and still didn't think this was weird?
Not really explained how many attempts they did. They though it may have had something to do with Itomori being in the boonies (makes no sense, but only if you have some idea of cellular networks).
>>160427758
>Did they attempt to call each other multiple times and still didn't think this was weird?
Not him but on first viewing it never occurred to me that they were in different timelines. I just assumed that Musubi was preventing them from being able to call each other. There's also some purposeful misdirection. The first time we see them try to call each other, we're led to believe it connects but it turns out it was Tessie calling Mitsuha instead. The initial logical conclusion is that it didn't connect because she already was in a call. The bombshell drop, she ded btw.
So how much did it cost to travel from Itomori to Tokyo and vice-versa?
Wouldn't that cost a fortune for Mitsuha and Taki when they tried visiting each other?
>>160427519
You're looking at it on a superficial level. The simplicity or complexity of the plot has nothing to do with it - some of the most powerful and substantial works of all time have, well, very simple stories. The Seventh Seal is just about a Chess game, Ikiru is just about some old dude building a park. Complexity doesn't equal quality.
The real question is, rather, "what is this movie trying to express" or "what themes are they trying to convey." Just consider those constant shots of the sliding doors in the first act. Why are there so many? Why the focus? Would it help if I mentioned there are similar scenes with sliding train doors?
I think it's obvious that through aesthetic and story choices that there are clear and obvious concepts that Shinkai is expressing beyond the superficial "story," as confirmed in many interviews. While I'm not going to say depth makes a movie good, or it justifies bad story, a movie that hits deep emotionally with powerful theming and aesthetics, even if the audience isn't immediately aware of it, is always more impactful and interesting than a dull circlejerk of narrative complexity.
>>160427648
Capeshit is garbage not because of spectacle, but because of its lack of theme or impact. Movies that have both, like Burton's Batman, are beloved even by /tv/.
As for Koe no Katachi, aside from adapting a pretty meh manga, the real issue there is lack of narrative cohesion and the way that the visuals don't augment the narrative. The story is interesting but Yamada chooses to imitate film rather than find interesting applications for animation, which ends up damaging the cohesion of the presentation.
>>160427778
Didn't need to be a TV series. OVAs can be released straight to disc and in any number. 4~8 OVAs would have been alright.

Not really. Your Name is pretty shallow compared to everything Shinkai has done. Your Name is a spectacle that tells its themes and narrative through its visuals hence why it works more as an experience than a narrative. Does this mean the movie is dumb? Look at those cuts comparing rural shio to pneumatic train doors. Or the who divine shinto thing, or the fact that Mitsuha wears the hairband into adulthood, or Taki saying he wants to build towns that evoke natsukashii. It's pretty fair to say, and very obvious to any competent observer, that this movie is in large part about the transition from rural, traditional Japan to modern Japan. And that, even as rural towns die out and people abandon old traditions, there's something intrinsically Japanese, like the sound of sliding doors or Mitsuha's hairband or the feeling of Natsukashii, that never gets lost. That pervades every era and location, like the constant references to Musubi. Traditions change, but the "spirit" of them don't. And this isn't looking too deep into it or anything, it's constantly referenced through the movie, and clarified in interviews. There's no point to denying that fact.
It's a brainlet thing to do, to dismiss any attempt at interpretation or understanding figurative elements as "looking too deep into it." Go back to high school english.
>Your Name is a spectacle that tells its themes and narrative through its visuals hence why it works more as an experience than a narrative.
You have no idea what you're talking about. They're not mutually exclusive, you know? And yes, it's pretty much agreed upon that the goal of film is to tell its narrative and theme through visuals. Did you even watch the movie? Burton's Batman sure, had this strange, neo-gothic visual style, dark brooding shapes and uncomfortable designs, all bound with Elfman's booming, but emotive score - but all of this is in service of the theme. Or at least, of one particular concept that the film is expressing, that the greatest enemies come from within, come from insanity and the frailness of the human mind. The story is about the Joker releasing an insanity gas, has Batman constantly questioning his own sanity. Hell, the story is based on The Killing Joke, which was literally all about how "one bad day" is all it takes to drive a man insane.

>But underneath the surface of 'Your Name' is a story where countless people were saved from disaster by a young girl's dreams of divine revelation. Ever since 2011, we Japanese have always wondered 'what if I were in your shoes ...'. To put it another way, the feeling of 'what if I was not the person I was back then [during the disaster (but in fact someone who died or got injured or someone who decided to go out and save people etc.)]'. 'What if at that time, at that place, I was there', or 'what if a huge disaster struck Tokyo tomorrow'. Actually, I quite like the train shit in 5cm/s. See, Shinkai struggles with a lot - I personally think he's a garbage animator and his art is iffy - but he loves visual Leitmotifs, that's, well, his trademark. He loves mixing the figurative and the literal.
So in 5cm/s, we have a story that starts with the kids promising that they'll watch the cherry blossoms again. And with these dark, lonely train trips, trains get set up again as this allegory for separation. At the end of the movie, the Sakura are blooming, the two walk past each other as both are flower-viewing, and boom, separated by a train. It's a microcosm of the film's entire conceit, and there the two characters make the most defining decision of the movie - to leave. For all the movie's flaws, I have to admire the elegance of that final scene.

>You do realize that the neo gothic lore bullshit originated from Burton's Batman right? Batman was never about that shit to begin with it just became a facet of his character due to the tremendous success.
Well, actually, you can trace that shit way back throughout comic history. Many, many "gothic" Batman comics were published in the 70s and 80s, and even Bob Kane and Bill Finger's original vision for Batman was described as dark and brooding, in a similar vein to Burton's work. Let's not forget the influence of Miller either. Burton might have popularized it, but it was in no means the first case that batman has been conceived as of such.
But that's not really the point. I'm not here to test your comic knowledge, or lack thereof. Tell me, how is the gothic horror look a detriment to these themes of insanity?

What in the world are you even trying to argue here? That using visuals to tell us how the protagonist sees the world is "incoherent visual flare"...? It's neither the first or last time his cognition is explicitly shown, and it's well-aligned with both the aesthetics and the content of the film.
It's also the better film of the two, in my opinion, because I care more about layouts and editing than post-processing, and because I care more about the relations between humans than supernatural nonsense and sentimentalism.

yes
Any of the subs has subbed the songs that play in the film?
This movie was unmemorable garbage with contrived plot holes and forced drama, with shitty character archetypes: A yamato nadeshiko female MC who literally only serves as a damsel in distress. The male mc is a gary stu who managed to bend space and time to his will, while his friends only exist to further show how cool he is, oh yeah and the much more interesting love interest gets shot down. The body-swapping mechanics and time travel was seldom explained except for "muh shinto god magic" and if you can look past the scenery porn the entire movie was just a jumbled mess.
Basically this movie took everything wrong with anime and gave it a multi-million dollar budget, and despite that there was still plagiarism in the movie at its most intense scene. Bravo Japan.

Your point is, and continues to be, and I quote
>You can look into meaning into the most pointless things but that does not mean its the intention of the director that's just you looking into things that's not there.
Which I've taken apart.
One, the director has expressed in interviews that it was his intent.
Two, I've pointed out certain elements that tie into the director's intended theme, and explained why they tie in.
Now, for sure your last statement is bullshit, but if you'd like you can address what I said about these elements. If they're pointless and I'm looking too deep, why? Where is the disconnect, where do these elements contradict themselves, or the theme?
>How to spot a retard
No, and this is coming from someone who's worked on many musical productions in the past.
While certain productions of particular age, like the 20s flick "Show Boat," are rather movies with a bit of singing, spectacular choreography is a staple of the genre. Look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tciT9bmCMq8
Or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOYzFKizikU
Or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDnKaHHe0Rw
Actually throughout the 20s and 30s it was standard to include a long sequence of tap-dancing in musical numbers.
If you'd like a more in-depth look, try this article on the Cinematography in Chicago.

You've repeated yourself and said I was looking too deep into it. Reiterate yourself, and counter the points I've made. If I'm looking too deep into the movie, where am I mistaken? Why is my interpretation of this scene wrong? If you repeat the same thing, and never make any argument for it, or against my rebuttal, then it's not really a point, is it?
>Batman did not start out as gothic you fucking plebian, it was with the revamp in the 70's that he took a darker tone.
Yes, but Batman was 1989. So batman was going dark well before Burton. As for the original conception,
>It had nothing to do with insanity nor did they compliment one another
Yes, Poe had nothing to do with insanity, right? The most famous pieces of gothic horror literature, from Frankenstein to Jekyll and Hyde, and even to some extent Dracula, they have literally NOTHING to do with people going insane, right? Picture of Dorian Grey, picture of sound mind.
>>160429768
there is no bullshit deus ex machina in 5cm/s. akari and takaki met naturally, bonded acceptably, the separation occurs naturally, both in terms of distance and emotion. the conclusion made sense regardless of how unsatisfying it is. the primary weakness of the movie is its length and shinkai's signature amv ending but the film had a single focus throughout the hour.
in knnw on the other hand there was no reason for taki to be selected other than mitsuha wanting to be an ikemen. their bond is superficial, and their dynamic is rushed. there's really not enough reason for them to be in love with one another.
i enjoy knnw over 5cm/s, but knnw definitely have more flaws.

It's not incoherent, it's not even bad, but it's not cohesive. Those two words mean different things, you know. I was pointing out that while there was this obvious visual thing pointing out a specific idea, the rest of the visuals - the lighting, the angles, these things do nothing to express the level of separation. Go watch Taxi Driver and see how every detail of the world and the direction portrays this feeling of isolation. The use of focal lengths to keep the protagonist sharp, but blur the background into a mosaic.
>It's also the better film of the two, in my opinion, because I care more about layouts and editing than post-processing, and because I care more about the relations between humans than supernatural nonsense and sentimentalism.

I don't see how any criticism you level at Your Name isn't equally applicable to 5cm/s. >Look at those cuts comparing rural shio to pneumatic train doors. Or the who divine shinto thing, or the fact that Mitsuha wears the hairband into adulthood, or Taki saying he wants to build towns that evoke natsukashii. It's pretty fair to say, and very obvious to any competent observer, that this movie is in large part about the transition from rural, traditional Japan to modern Japan
Now, if you want to disprove that, go ahead. But saying I didn't is just garbage reading comprehension.
And why do you keep sidestepping the point that you're wrong about the director? Man up, and stop moving the goalposts, fag.

>>160430162
i think you're confusing something here. in 5cm/s they were in love because of a natural reason. you find it just as I did that it was unsatisfactory because it was done via exposition instead of interaction, which is a consequence of the runtime. so again
>the interpersonal dynamics are utterly lifeless and facile
i dont disagree with you. in knnw that time restriction isnt there anymore. the interaction between mitsuha and taki is more satisfying, it's just unconvincing enough for me to consider them soulmates. it was even remarked by the grandmother whos also experienced body swapping, but dismissed it just as a dream. no one in their right mind blows away the money they made working part time at 17 to look for something so vague as taki did. shinkai should've elaborated more early on how they developed feelings for each other, that is my point on why 5cm/s despite being a 1 hour exposition, is more mature, but less enjoyable than knnw.

>>160432823
how else would she have been recognizable?
it's not like shes wearing the bunny clip anymore
>>160432836
So the timeline is 2013 KnNW > Kotonoha no Niwa > 2016 KnNW right? Wonder why Yukino-san is in the boonies in the first place
>>160432272
>>160432558
too old. single digits yotsuha a best
>>160432934
shes a literature teacher isnt she? i guess for experience and better understanding.
hmm does shinka like older women?
>>160432836
>>160432934
Wait... wasnt yukino-san teaching in tokio? So she move? now i want to read teories of what is happening.
>>160433287
>shinka
>>160433362
It's not unusual for teachers to start out somewhere in the middle of the nowhere.
>>160430790
Well I tried blurring some of the colors and erasing the background in paint now. Aside from the rough edges I'm going to call it ok. Kill me please.
>>160433366
Mitsuha(Taki) reminded me of her.
>>160433431
>>160430790
I'm working on a stitch as we speak. The "camera" moves in 3D; Mitsuha and the background are at different angles depending on the frame.
>>160424946
wish i could notice this type details.
>>160423863
Professional artist uses all sorts of resources all the time graphite paper and light tables are tracing tools that almost every artist uses, it doesn't detract from the quality of their work because they use it.

>So all the makoto shinkai works share the same universe?
I think it would be hard to fit Beyond the Clouds and Voices from a Distant Star into the same universe as Kimi no Na wa, Garden of Words and 5cm at the least.
>>160433362
She was teaching in Tokyo, she was moved out to the boonies at the end of the movie.
>>160434421
yes but she looks much younger here
>>160431428
>why is this old hag touching me
>i could be fucking cute teenagers right now
>>160430678
Mitsuha looks cute there
>>160434450
Maybe after this she went to Tokyo, and the events of her town getting BTFOed led to her drinking problem.
How many other countries in the world do you think you could run through the ticket gates like this and it would register you properly?
>>160434635
US, South Korea, probably some European countries.
>>160421518
tfw you thought keitai was legitimately the short name of kimi no na wa.
tfw start watching kimi no na wa and wondering why this isnt going according to the plot of Keitai youve heard so much about.

So is everyone going to ignore the huge plot hole that is the dates not matching up?
I mean come on, they are both writing diaries and using their phones.
>>160434635
japan and some of europe use smartphones for things like that. NFC has been here for like a decade but murricans dont want to move on and are holding the rest of the world back.
>>160436860
The dates match up, it's just the years that don't and it's not that unusual to use dates with just months and days.
>>160436976
Not just the ability to use them but the speed.
In Japan you can reliably run through the gates, the reading of your NFC card is nigh on instantaneous.
>>160436860
The problem is more them not noticing the DAYS were different. Or at least not commenting on it in their diaries when they noticed, they likely would have forgotten a detail like that returning to their own body (dates and times are things you really don't remember in dreams unless you have a lucid one).
>>160437633
You dont question things in a dream. I have never once recalled the day it was during one.
People have recognized that Yuki-sensei is Yukino Yukari from Garden of Words, but there is one other GoW reference that I didn't notice until I watched Kimi no Na wa with Japanese subs. When Mitsuha is in class, one of the students asks about "Kataware-doki", and in the English subs Yuki-sensei replies that the elders of Itomori still use classical language. She is specifically saying that they use Man'yō words (万葉言葉) meaning words from the classical Japanese poetry work Man'yōshū (万葉集). If you have watched GoW you may remember that the Man'yōshū plays a significant role in that move. It seems Yukino knows her poetry quite well!
>>160437633
They both occasionally pick up on mistakes like that but dismiss it the same way you dismiss a burst of deja vu, just an oddity
>>160423352
She looked sexy as fuck with bedhair.
>>160438882
Bedhair is sexy because it's her hair after sex.
>>160432274
VLCtards have always been amongst us.
>>160430790
why did they make her so puffy?
>>160440492
Because she's a cute teenage miko.
>>160440492
>>160440676
I want to eat Mitsuha's cute puffy pussy!
>people still defend CG when this exists
>>160440966
The CG in this was, overall, pretty good though.
>>160436860
Wow, you're the first person to notice this!
>>160441340
still doesn't make it less of a problem with the overall plot.
It is a huge hole that really took me out of the movie and made it seem like they were just shooting for a "big twist"
>>160441658
>It is a huge hole that really took me out of the movie
I feel bad for you, fampai.
>>160441658
>suspension of disbelief
>>160423571
mpv obviously or any of its frontends such as baka mplayer.
It is fucking great and miles ahead of stuff like VLC especially when it comes to performance.
>>160434635
In what countries can you just walk into public transport, being trusted that you own a ticket which is only occasionally controlled?
In Germany you sure can!
>>160442224
There is only so much suspension of disbelief that a director can expect of the audience.
When there is such a blatant plot hole then it just becomes bad writing, which it was in this case.
>>160421518
The ending was complete shit though.
The movie would have been drastically improved if it ended withthem just continuing to ignore each other.
>>160442510
>wanting no payoff
Life's not that harsh anon. Well maybe to you but not the rest of us.
>>160442510
