>The whole idea that someone was made just for you
I don't think that's what the movies are about at all.
There is love, and there is destiny, but the destiny isn't love, it's just an interaction that makes the plot interesting.
This is a stupid comparison, but it seems to me more about "arranged marriage can be work amazingly" than "there's someone special for you"

Like I said, it was more of a complaint about the idea of soulmates in general, not really aimed at the movie.
The movie connects the two mains through time travel shenanigans with the braided cord but it does heavily symbolize the red string of fate.
I'm just personally against that kind of theme. It wasn't the dealbreaker for me, but it did kind of suck a bit of my enjoyment out of the movie. It doesn't help that their romance didn't have proper set up and the characterization was pretty poor, so I couldn't exactly root for them easily.

Musubi, the local god, has been causing body swapping for centuries in order to line up events perfectly to save the town.

Pretty much everything was predetermined, setting up the right couples in the family and putting people in the right place at the right time.
>>
>>160378699
If it ended here, I would never watch one of this guy's movies again.
>>
>>160378858
>Pretty much everything was predetermined

Eh, considering that we literally saw a timeline in which the town was destroyed I wouldn't think it was nearly such a set in stone thing.
>>
>>160378741
The Miamizu maidens all had bodyswap experiences, there's no indication of if they were all with people in different times, or even all with people in the future.

>>160378792
But Taki theorizes they were with people in the future like him. Like the god was linking them up with people in the future so that when a link finally happened past the comet's return they could do something to save his parishioners.
>>
>>160378858
>>160378913

>>
>>160378913
The town would have to be destroyed for the town to be saved.
>>
>>160378913
That was mainly due to complete unawareness of the meteor splitting and landing on the town (whoever thought it was a good idea to make a picture warning on the ceiling on a dark cave had a sick sense of humor).

The second time around, musubi brought in a person completely aware of the situation and voluntarily chooses to save the townspeople with what little resources and time is left. The thing to notice is the first timeline represents "strings broken/separated", while the second timeline is "strings reunited". Musubi is its own sick sense of humor too.
>>
>>160379101
>(whoever thought it was a good idea to make a picture warning on the ceiling on a dark cave had a sick sense of humor).
That probably wasn't a warning, just a record of history.
It only becomes a warning once you realize that its a cyclic event, which they wouldn't have known at the time.

Eh, I'd hardly call that a rip-off. Kimi no na Wa was obviously influenced at least to some extent by Nijiro Hotaru - If you wanna go down that route there's much more about the movie you can attribute to that - time travel, for one. There's so much in common here I have a hard time thinking it wasn't a homage.

And hell, if you're talking Pakuri Nijiro Hotaru was basically Jiro Taniguchi's A Distant Neighborhood in anime film form. No idea is that original under the sun, and it's not a huge deal for directors to copy scenes they like from one another.

And the fact that they only got the ending to work on after RADWIMPS finished Nandemonaiya is really a testament to their crafting of the art over the work. Nobody at the time probably expected this to make such a phenomenal hit as it is now, so I hope they're really glad of themselves.

I started the movie up with the subs linked in >>160383729 and they're a significant improvement over what I had previously. Better font, better text placement, and nicely inconspicuous translations of Japanese text that appears on objects within the film.

A lot of times one of the things I look for in Shinkai movies is, "How would this movie make me feel if it were a perfect, verbatim live-action adaptation and divorced of all the pretty pictures and endearing character designs?" In other words, purely on story and characters.

It's better than most of his other films in this regard, since some of them (like 5 Centimeters) would be outright painful to sit through, but still not really that great at all. Just satisfactory this time, in my opinion.

It is true though. The use of music and montage in the film is very good, exceptional even in cases. The audio visual symmetry that Shinkai creates is very reminiscent of the cinema that focuses on musical montage. If you had a greater context, you might appreciate the stylistic choices and direction but you are free to dislike it all the same.

I wasn't too into it at first but I ended up really liking the dream-like romantic nature of the story. There's definitely plot holes and it feels a little under-written in some areas but the main priority was obviously making an emotional experience which I think they did pretty well.

I think people are looking at this movie wrong. Some people like how cheesy the romance is, some people think it's stupid - but why all the damn focus on the romance? I'll be honest, I didn't think it was that great. The characters didn't exactly interact a ton, and the nuances of the few times they do let a little chemistry flow are obscured by the Zenzenzense montage - which to me was a terrible decision.

That said, I GET why people love the romance so much. Because they love the characters. This movie does a fantastic job of characterization in the first quarter of the movie, seriously. Rarely does a film like this get you to care about both the romantic leads so quickly. As much as I love films like Whispers of the heart or Omoide Pororo, let's be honest, they're character studies. The male love interest is bland as a cardboard cutout. Taki and Mitsuha are so interesting, and so compatible, that the audience starts to ship them before the movie even does.

Even if the romance isn't really that well developed, I'd rather watch two characters I like interact a little, rather than boring, dull leads make googly eyes for two hours. To be fair, though, how often does an anime film done a romantic subplot better than this?

And that's the key, subplot. Romance in KNNW is as relevant as it is in Kiki. It's not the driving theme behind the narrative, it's a vehicle to help develop characters and make the broader themes Shinkai is presenting, about generation gaps and proactive living, more palatable.

It's the Suga Shrine. I walked there from the Shinanomachi bridge, it's about a 20 minute walk. God I miss Japan, I went there on my last day.

The Suga Shrine's deity is Susanoo and is supposed to bring good luck. It was probably intentional that Taki and Mitsuha would reunite there.

Not him but it's the only other thing I used aside from the officials. Subs are better, in that you can see how they have an accent due to the words used, compared to the official ones where they just use whatever. Songs are better subbed, it's easier to distinguish who's speaking in where, and there are subtle translations for things in nip that were originally just in the subs in the official BD, like mitsuha's diary entry in Taki's phone or her notes, or the writings they put on each others' bodies. Plenty better than the official one by far.

I finally watched this and now it really feels like Shinkai recycled a lot of material and ideas he had from Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place.
If it wasn't for the direction the romantic development took, I'd say it's almost like that was the pilot for this movie.
The whole monologue on the beginning is almost identical, MC's sci-fi relationship affecting their surroundings, the landscape changes, prologue, even the setting and time lapses.

Now that I have spent time mapping this out I get the impression that they spent a considerable amount of time, maybe hours, running around this area until they finally saw each other.

The original lake was a due to the comet, they say so in the film (Teshigawara looks it up, says it was formed 1,200 years before which is the same orbital period as the comet).

The caldera where the god's body is I don't know. Best I could say is maybe, but considering the comet managed to drop on nearly the same spot with such accuracy with those two shots I can only assume that the caldera is just an extinct volcano.

It's candy for people vulnerable to cheap heartstring pulling tactics, which happens to coincide with the bulk of anime watchers. This film was beautiful garbage just like everything else Shinkai has done, but this time the beauty does a better job of keeping you looking forward on the tightrope instead of looking down into the pit of plot holes, nonsensical motivations, and leaps of logic.

If I am reading this right that boulder in the caldera, that is above where they place the kuchikamizake is a fragment from the comet.

Two people who have never met fall in love. Shinkai himself said no reason, that doesn't excuse it in this instance. Love doesn't really need a reason, but it does require interacting with the other person at least once.

>>160389429
This one of course, they'd have to both be braindead not notice this. Especially at school or watching the news. If you don't concede this one, you should probably take the goggles off.

Switching bodies so often yet he never learns the name of her school or the town he spends that much time in? This is before memory loss.

He didn't remember the comet disaster occurring in the news when he watched the comet pass himself, when the town that was destroyed was specifically named in the news repeatedly. This happened before any switching so his memory should have been completely intact and rung a bell when he switched into the village the first time.

He also conveniently doesn't remember meeting her in the train when she gives him the string despite being in her body enough to surely have recognized that weird girl from one time, especially since he kept the string all along. (Did he completely forget where he got it?)

Anyway, it's a nice turn your brain off movie and I'm sure a hand wave of "muh village god planned all these absurd plot conveniences" can fix some cognitive dissonance but it didn't really do it for me.

Guess most people like it because of the heartwarming ending, plus the above-average Shinkai/ComixWave storyboard and animation.
Also many of the normalfags and casual shits who hyped the fuck out of the movie doesn't know any of his previous works so they are not used to his style.
If Shinkai pulled a 5cm/s-like ending when they cross each other on the snowy bridge it would be a masterpiece in my book. That's what most of his movies where about, a hint of fantasy but ending with a realistic bittersweet tone.
By the way, you should stop listening to anime YOUTUBERS.

Currently, only the movie itself has any subtitles. None of the bonus features have any subtitle tracks, although the Anime Expo segment has a few hardcoded Japanese subtitles in there during parts where they're talking in English. But any Q&A part with Makoto Shinkai just covers his answers in Japanese and skips over the translator telling the audience what he said.

No it's not. A translation is supposed to translate the original meaning into the target language. It's not supposed to include a male character calling himself a girl when that didn't happen in the original work.
>>
>>160391561
It maybe minor, but it is a cultural change. It changes on the author regards the item, the culture behind it, and it 's NOT the same as a bucket. It also robs audiences the opportunity to be exposed and learn new things. It may sound silly, but it is treating the audience as stupid and needing to be coddled which robs them of learning experiences.
>>
>>160391869
Recognize the obvious sarcasm.
>>
>>160391728
It has to do with context. In polite/formal the word is generally unisex, but in the setting of teenage guys who are friends amongst themselves, it's much rarer than it is among girls.

Now, if Mitsuha had decided to pull out an "atashi" at that point, it would have been more suspicious.

>A translation is supposed to translate the original meaning into the target language. It's not supposed to include a male character calling himself a girl when that didn't happen in the original work.

The original meaning of that scene is that that the girl, currently in the guys body, says something that immediately gives away that she's using feminine speech/pronouns, and when she sees that's been noticed by the people with her, she stumbles into correcting what she's saying to be more masculine

While a little unavoidably awkward, that is the correct way to translate the scene, as opposed to incompetent shit like not actually translating it at all and leaving in random other language words, or worse with a HEY WHAT THEY SAID MEANS: note plastered on the screen

But that is also true of the Tsukasa-kun thing. The official Finnish translation handled the situation really well by emphasizing that Mitsuha was being unusually polite when Tsukasa was commenting on her usage of the kun honorific (thusly also taking care of translating the meaning from the pronoun scene) and then using the pronoun scene to further play up her dialect instead by having her try various dialect pronouns at first (thusly not adding any meaning that wasn't already in the work to begin with).

I mean the basic time travel stuff. How did they not figure out the date.
As the girl he went to school. Somewhere where you have a 90% chance of writing or seeing the date.
They used a Journal app with the date.
Cellphones from 3 years/ cellphone from the future.
She kept talking about the meteor, you'd figure he'd wonder what the fuck she was on about. Especially if 3 years ago a meteor actually killed 500 people.

You could find an excuse for all those things if you wanted to though.
Still loved it. But if I'm being objective you can never have time travel stories without some plot holes.

>>
>>160392130
The only real plot hole/contrivance as such is them never noticing the time difference despite their heavy use each others phones, but that's a story conceit to make the twist work that you just have to let slide really

Although, I may be remembering wrong since I'm waiting for my BD to arrive to watch it again, but I do vaguely remember there being some ground given to that, something about how their states were dreamlike so they may not remember things clearly enough to pick up on something that subtle? I know Taki's perception was definitely messed up and unclear once he reached the point in time where Mizuha died.

Yeah, it's literally impossible that taki wouldn't have remembered LOOKING at the meteor, even the fucking news said "what a time to be alive to see this"
>>
>>160392263
Yea but you'd notice while in the body, not the next day.

When you leave notes in the diary you might add something like "Hey why do you have your date set to 2014 when it's 2017?"
>>
>>160392236
Well, it's not that usual to type the year in a date normally. And you could easily have a cell phone from 3 years ago today, and a today's cell phone wouldn't really look strange to someone from 3 years ago either unless they recognized all the models out there and knew it wasn't one of them.

If I were to wake up as some girl from somewhere in Japan from time to time. I might be more open to the supernatural and might look into things when she mentions a meteor.

Watashi is a feminine way of saying I/me
watakuchi is sort of neutral
boku is for boys
Ore is for boys

She was testing the reaction to each one until she got the correct one.
>>
>>160393109
What needs to be cleaned? How would you fix it?
Do you want it to just say:
-I
-I
-I
-I

or do you want TL notes at each frame?

"Translator's Notes: When you go to Japan, don't ever say 'watashi' or else everyone within earshot will think you're a chick playing a dude disguised as another dude."

>Cellphones from 3 years/ cellphone from the future.
Boonies girl with old cellphone, city guy with new cellphone. You would only really know if you kept up with technology.

>She kept talking about the meteor, you'd figure he'd wonder what the fuck she was on about. Especially if 3 years ago a meteor actually killed 500 people.
There's no reason why he should link to that unless he suspected a connection. It was three years ago. Imagine if Halley's comet passed by three years ago and someone mentioned a comet being visible in the sky tonight, would you assume they were talking about Halley's comet or would you wonder what comet they are talking about?
Visible comets are rare but there's no reason he should have suspected it was that one from three years before unless he already suspected time separation to be in effect. So really it is just a subset of the not noticing the year issue.
>>
>>160393222
The problem is as >>160393147 mentioned, it's complete nonsense unless you're a weeb and know what the Japanese words mean

There's a few options you could take -

Go with just "-I" like you say and rely on the tone of the scene and peoples voices to get the point across

Remove the bracketed words and just do a translation note that Taki is using feminine words

Revise the line to something that actually makes sense in English while getting across the point

Thanks God they left it in this way.

>something about how their states were dreamlike so they may not remember things clearly enough to pick up on something that subtle?
The big problem with that though is that during the dream they're fully conscious, so if they noticed the year difference they could have written it in the diary or something, so even if they forgot it when waking up it would have been recorded for the other person.

>unless you're a weeb
Want to watch any foreign media in its original language first? You're a weeb! Doesn't matter if it's Japanese, French, German, Italian, Hungarian, Afrikaans, Hindi, Cantonese -- you're a weeb.
Care about accurate and nuanced translations? Weeb!
Care about how foreign names are pronounced? Weeb!
Don't give a shit about dubs and who's going to be in them? Weeb!

Fucking lemmings.
>>
>>160393420
There are no english equivalents.

Adding a TL note would be worse.

Putting the words in brackets shows the viewers that even though she's saying I each time, she's still using a different word until the other boys give her the Ok.

From that people should figure out that there are different ways to say I and she said it correctly that 4th time.

Some of it will go over their head but overall they'll understand the gist.

I forgot her name this morning. I was laying in bed last night thinking about kimi no na wa and I couldn't remember if it was Mitsuha or Mitsuho. When I woke up this morning I couldn't remember her name at all. I kept thinking and all I could come up with was all these other japanese names. I kind of felt like they did. Like it was a dream that you vaguely remember.

>Watashi isn't exactly a feminine pronoun
>pronouns that men can definitely use as well
Where did you learn to speak Japanese?
>>
>>160392412
Most of the time in Japan it is just month and day.

>>160392428
That's something fairly skipped. He did have her number in his phone though, and she tried to call him when she visited Tokyo.
In the LN at the beginning of the montage it says that they tried calling and mailing but it wouldn't go through so they decided to leave notes instead.

>>160392461
I don't remember the LN mentioning two previous impacts, just the one.

>>160393197
>>160393420
Watashi is neutral.
Watakushi is formal, older people are more likely to use naturally or use it in a formal situation.

Watashi is perfectly fine to use as a foreigner. Boku/Ore is usually something you pick up based on your personality, using one of those could give people an impression about what kind of person you are without you realizing it.

I'm sure DHL has a legitimate reason why they're sending it through Ohio, but it's still frustrating to see it on the far side of the Mainland while it's on its way here.

>Where did you learn to speak Japanese?
In Japan.
>>
>>160393543
The easy way to remember this is that 葉 is "ha".

The grandmother is 一葉, Hitoha
The mother is 二葉, Futaba
The older sister is 三葉, Mitsuha
The younger sister is 四葉, Yotsuha, and another reading for this can be "Yotsuba", thus completing the 4chan loop.

From the English translation of the LN:

>Falling forever. Or maybe rising. In the midst of this indistinct floating sensation, the comet shines in the night sky. Without warning, it splits, and half of it comes plummeting down. The meteorite strikes a village in the mountains. Many people die. A lake forms, and the village is destroyed. Time passes, and another village grows up around the lake. The lake provides fish, and the heavenly iron provides wealth. The village prospers. Ages pass, and the comet arrives again. Once again, the star falls. Once again, people die. This has happened twice since mankind settled on these islands. People tried to remember it. They tried to pass on the knowledge to future generations, using methods that would last longer than letters. The comet as a dragon. The comet as braided cords. The fracturing comet as the gestures of a dance.

How they handled the scene with watashi, ore in LN translation?
And how about yenpress's manga translation? Are they using honorifics in manga?

Ah, but then that does seem to suggest the same place rather than on the mountain.
