Edgy backstories are hardly anything new to battlemaids, and Subaru suspected that's what they were from the beginning.

I can't honestly say the Twins subvert much at all, and "development" would be ignoring the fact that their presentation was clearly set up so they'd be seen under a certain light. This aspect very much ties into how the Twins are written. Before Arc 3 started, WN readers were given the Mayo chapters as context for Rem's love of Subaru, which provides a perspective on her personality and love for both the readers and Subaru. What we're shown there isn't wrong, but we're later told not to be dismissive because of it.

You know, i don't quite get the people who hate this series. It seriously has what a lot of people wanted. An MC that doesn't get everything he wants, and if he did get something (like his "powers") they all come with quite a bit of disadvantages and on top of that, actually having human emotions. Sure, he still had quite a bit of good luck befriending a royal candidate but he actually has to show that he means no harm. Not only that, but in the second arc alone it showed how much he had to think on his feet and try all he could to make the ones around him trust him. Either through words or actions, he tried his best to make the people around him think more of him.

And the third act, jesus, was that a great one. It showed everything awful, yet human about Subaru. Through his fits of anger in regards to people not helping him to him down right being selfish and thinking he deserves everything. It's all pointed towards him and he actually has to change as a person to get the help.

I'm not sure how long post I want to write in a shitposting thread, but aspects like world-building and the overall cohesion in the story are horseshit. Re:Zero uses fantasy and isekai cliches in a most unimaginative way possible and the result is a world that could be modern day Japan with a retexture. Detail in setting and lore are nonexistent, they just are not there, and we know practically nothing about the norms, laws and species ruling the world. Even in overall fantasy genre the setting is weak on every aspect.

Most jarring feature in Re:Zero for me was that the arcs switch most of the core cast and the setting entirely, some important characters from previous arcs remain but they are reduced to absolutely supporting role. As the links connecting the arcs are weak as shit, one of the only constants is the main character and frankly I don't think his character is enough to carry the entire show.

I think it's neither as bad, nor as good as people say it is. Sounds cliche? I know.

It was enjoyable, the setting was rather generic and I wouldn't call the world building particularly good, nor did it excite me to learn more about said world, no real subtlety was put into crafting it. Instead I suppose the aim and appeal was more on the characters and how they develop and progress, particularly the MC. And I'd say that was reasonably well handled, sure, Subaru's devotion to Emilia and his open declaration of being a knight, as well as his subsequent insulting of Emilia, were both forced and really only served to move the story. But hey at least the latter provided inner conflict, if at the expense of the viewer's frustration.

Of course not, but in turn, they add depth and immersion to the story. I wouldn't even complain about this unless the building would be extremely lacking. The things we know about the world are very limited and even things that should realistically be there are missing: for example it's unbelievable that the society would function exactly the same as ours when there's a multitude of different intelligent species inhabiting the world. Usually even the most bare-bones fantasy story would give passing focus on for example racism and societal structure of a world where you have these animal-humans, but it's just not there in any form. Maybe it's not super relevant for the plot, but makes it painfully obvious the world isn't just that well thought out. In this and many other aspects the world is just a retexture of modern Japan where some humans have animal skin.

Naturally we can argue is this relevant enough for the story. Again, if the focus is just growth of the main character you can argue these aspects to be "bloat", but then again, the fact they are not there and not even implied to be there is enough to break the suspension of disbelief and I'd argue it automatically makes for extremely weak setting.

Well, here's how I'd rank it. The WN is the original. I noticed a lot of the time it tends to go into more detail on particular scenes. Inner monologues often have more details, and it sometimes does a little more to paint out a scene. It also has a lot of pointless and not-so-pointless fluff, and sometimes doesn't bother showing things that should be important.

The LN is the published version. It fixes some issues, often doing more to introduce characters better. Added some scenes to show why Subaru should care about the maids forgetting him, instead of just saying it. However, it also often loses some details. Shortens descriptions in ways that make things a bit less clear at times.

I only really judge the anime on everything in that post. I may go out of my way to read the WN or LN at some point, but right now I don't have the time or the drive to do it.

Basically, the Dragon does a ton of shit for the country whenever they have a major problem. When there's a war, it joins in to help. When there's a famine, it restores fertility to the land. When there's a plague, it cures that shit. Right now they don't have any problem, except that the Royal family is dead and the Dragon contract defunct.

Contact with other countries has been shut down while they try to get a new contract set up, as the other countries also have their own super weapons. The Holy Kingdom of Gusteko has the Sacred Beast Odglas, for example. So Lugnica is currently vulnerable to invasion.

The country also has some financial issues because of irresponsible spending, which is why Julius is backing Anastasia from Kararagi. Kararagi being the merchant nation, seemingly founded by some isekai'd guy. There are some tensions with Vollachia along the southern border. Priscilla, who is actually from Vollachia, has been helping with that.
