Never before have I realize just how shit Japanese taste actually is. Browsing through anikore, which is essentially the Japanese version of MAL, I've found so many gems that it blew my mind.
We for example have Yamato 2199 and Macross DYRL sitting at a 65 and 76 rating respectively, with fucking Gundam Seed, one of the most atrocious entries in the Gundam franchise, having an average score of 86. And if that wasnt bad enough, CGL has a 93.

The original Mushishi sits at 86 as well, but for some wicked reason our eastern friends rated the sequels in form of Zoku Shou with below 70, 69 and 66 respectively. Non non Biyoris first season sits at 86, while the second scores 71.

You need to know the mentality of people when they're rating. People who watch something like Ping Pong would be more nuanced when assigning something, but people who watch SEED would be like "holy shit Kira is so awesome, 10/10".
