There's actually a delicate balance you wanna strike with your main character.

You kinda want him to be the everyman. Mainly since you'll be seeing this adventure through his eyes most of the time. And because it makes it easier to associate with this character.

At the same time you want the main character to be able to stand out. Give him traits and skills that only he has access to. Otherwise people will be asking why this person is the main character and not somebody else.

if the main character is some overly complicated super powered dude it becomes annoying trying to write all different kinds of complex scenarios to make fights interesting. Think about it, if your dude is too strong or so needlessly intricate with their powers, it becomes a choir even figuring out how to write fights that dont immediately end. When they are on the boring side, it allows room for them to grow and when they invent new shit to circumvent their average power, its twice as interesting. The idea of luffys gears is an example of that growth
