Was wondering about this myself. Why are these kinds of stories (i.e. cute characters + ridiculous suffering) so common in anime- Goblin Slayer, Madoka, hell even Railgun/Index to an extent.

Admittedly I sort of like the manga for this one, at least from what I've read.

The way I see it, since they're kids, they still have the ability to bounce from the deepest hardship to an optimistic yet innocent wonder and amazement of the world around them.
If one of the characters in Berserk or Hokuto no Ken who has also been through horrible suffering did something similar, it would just invite ridicule as being unrealistic because they're jaded adults.
Seeing the abyss through the eyes of a black whistle would be a whole lot more businesslike, and a whole lot less wondrous adventure.
