The city grew around the Abyss, not to procreate delvers, but to feed from the ongoing trade. Artifacts are exchanged for cash that is used to buy supplies to party, live everyday and restock for another descent.
Most of the people around the Abyss are there to seek gain from it, but not everyone goes onto the Abyss itself.

The vast majority of the population sees the Abyss as the ultimate adventure, the same way as fucking pleb sought space travel and '59 moon landing.
Only an extremely limited amount of people, namely the trained delvers, treat the Abyss in a more special way.
And that's because they actually risk their lives over there.

Here's the key difference between plebs chanting some Abyss-going lore, while keeping themselves in the comfort of their houses, and actual professionals risking their skin for adventure and glory.
Same as civilians and astronauts.

The key point here is that there's a tiered system that's being used to train the adepts.
They are not flooded with repeated knowledge, then tossed Spartan-like onto the Abyss just to RNG see who the fuck comes back.
The Abyss is not an initiation rite onto adulthood, it is a persistent source of food and sustainment.

Your logic is therefore flawed, because if what you stated was true, the whole Society would send young people onto the harder layers to prove their worth. Hence like Spartans.
Instead, they are clearly taught their limits, so that they may live on to contribute the most with their work.

In the end, the whole shit is a bit rushed to put the story in motion. And it would even be fine nonetheless.
But there's one fucker that undoubtely shines in his complete disregard of human safety, and common decency.
