2011 was made on a budget, and it shows. Chimera Ant got switched around with making it look like Kite was a forced OC and they had to drag it on due to Togashi still working on it at the time. Both are incomplete, so I may as well go with the one that showed some competence with the animation.

I wish they made the 2011 version more of a remaster of the 1999 one. We had some beautiful dramatic effects, especially when Killua was facing Illumi and a dark cinematic atmosphere for the Yorkshin City arc to make it feel special. In the 2011 anime, it feels like those moments "just happened".

For me the most disappointing moment was when Gon was facing Kanaria. The 99 version had a lot of impact for whatever reason and I was still looking forward to seeing how they would do it this time around, but it just left me completely cold. So I watched both, 1999 being my first because I loved YYH and Rurouni Kenshin as a kid. With that said, is it really a competition? I think both do well in the areas they are specialized in. They're both tonally different approaches, and I can definitely chalk that up to the overall feeling of anime in the 90s. I really like scenes from both, and each does a good job on different fights. While I enjoy the grim nature and lighting of 1999 immensely, 2011's cute and fun style, as well as its incredibly adventurous soundtrack, does a great job of depicted the lightheartedness of the overall journey from the start.

I think the differences ultimately favor watching both for their individual merits. 90s anime is a totally different beast from today's stuff, so I'm not surprised by how different they are, which is why I personally think of them as two separate things. Even something less apparent such as sound direction creates distinctly different experiences. The only thing I dislike about 2011 is that the pace is off to me, simply because of my initial experience with the first series. Some of the padding of the first series is lost in the transition, leaving me feeling like someone sped up the series 1.5x and then slowed it right the fuck down around the ants.

Okay but seriously, why is all post-digital switch anime so uniform and generic looking? All the background art looks the same, all shows use the same color palettes and orange/teal filters, every shot has so many effects and colors piled on top of each other that there's nothing in focus or any trace of contrast, nobody replicates lens effects, there are no clever angles or composition, it's like everyone's using the same list of stock tricks to save time and budget. Even the animation is hasty. And nobody points it out. I'm not crazy, is everyone blind?
