His bankai was superior to the power of Spirit King, but we don't know exactly what it was capable of because the bad guy broke it. You can probably compare it to the Final Getsuga Tenshou, being a balance of Ichigo's powers.

If you want to know what happens in the final battle is easy to explain. The Almighty guy steals the hollow and quincy powers of Ichigo once he has broken his bankai with the intention that Ichigo doesn't have access to all his power, since he is a threat. Tsukishima changes that memory by making the bankai intact again, but he can't return the lost powers to Ichigo so that his bankai is nothing more than a sword with 1/3 of its ability (the shinigami power). When the Almighty guy recovers its powers after disappearing the effect of the arrow that Ishida throw him and he is going to break the bankai again before Ichigo gets to hit him, the bankai is broken up appearing the original Zangetsu (Soul Society Arc) and it kills him.

Why does not the Almighty guy destroy Zangetsu (shikai) if it is weaker than its last bankai form (hybrid)? Because in the chapter where the Almighty guy is dreaming, we see that he has a premonitory dream (Almighty power) where Ichigo kills him using the original Zangetsu but he discards that possibility considering it impossible to happen. Without the hollow and quincy powers Ichigo only had his shinigami powers (weak compared to the hybrid power), unable to maintain his bankai (hybrid version), Zangetsu returns to his shikai form based on the shinigami power, his Soul Society Zangetsu is based on his shinigami power (since at that time Ichigo still doesn't know about his hollow and quincy powers). Remember that his powers change depending on how much information about himself he knows.
