Right now all that is about Yumeko just wanting to gamble with the president, the spoils of victory seem insignificant to her and are simply stakes to make the game more interesting. She won billions of yen and only regarded the money as more fodder for more gambling for instance.

Yumeko may well have other motivations than how a good gamble gets her wet, but we don't have much hint beyond the -bami family implications yet. So far Yumeko really seems to be aiming at Kirari herself, not the position she holds.

One of the things to keep in mind is that you need to be mentally stable to join this Academy in the first place, as most of the kids there already know how to gamble/cheat they're obviously prepared to face the consequences of failure.

Watched the anime. So far I think it's shit, not very smart, I thought by Episode 2 the protagonist would begin growing to become a competent gambler in by his own right, but he's still a complete wet towel, and the girl is shallow and pandering and there really haven't been any strong male characters so far (or female characters really, but this even more). I know they're going to meet that one guy in the OP by the end of it, but come on.

So, is the comic better than the anime? is it worth reading if I didn't like the anime? I liked Kaiji a lot, though I felt it could be comfortable watched at 2x speed to avoid all the filler.

Mary isn't the antagonist, she's just doing what the rest of the kids are doing, cheating and taking advantage of the others in debt.

In the manga I really liked how she becomes a part of the MC crew, I haven't read her side-story, so I hope she's even fleshed out more there.

I disagree, Yumeko is whimsical sure but her obsession with Kirari is definitely more than that. The two clearly respect each other though, and Yumeko's implication that Kirari is as self-destructive as she is makes me hype for when they finally get to gamble.

If you didn't like the anime, don't bother with the comics. The anime is an incredible adaptation of the manga. If you don't like it, don't bother with it.
