Do you think virtual worlds will be possible and become mainstream? Like in swords art online and Log Horizon

Things like virtual shopping websites (imagine having to move around in 1st person to navigate a virtual shopping mall, instead of just using Amazon normally) fail because most people, even when constantly connected to the internet, see it as a part of their life, and not a replacement to it. It's not unimaginable that we'll get an video game, MMO or otherwise, with a high degree of sensory feedback. Most people aren't going to jack-in 24/7 and live digitally while their physical body just subsists on life support, though . They'll just treat it like any other game.
That would imply we would get to know how our brain works perfectly, then you'd have to design a device that:
a) implants a chip/circuit on your brain so you can stimulate one part or another from the outside
b) an external device that can alter your neurotransmission from the outside, via radiation, very unlikely
even with any of these, there'd be no guarantee that you wouldn't get permanent brain damage, we're even struggling with transplanted hands and robotic limbs
I don't think Full VR will ever come. Our bodies just plain hate getting tinkered with from the outside
