Goku was a generally nice, naive kid rather than a fight autist. He was a character rather than a robot representing childhood nostalgia. There was striking imagery that compensated for Toriyama's constant underdeveloped writing.

I feel like the wrong lesson was learned from the Saiyan Saga. It's my favorite Z arc because it feels so desperate. Yamcha, Chiaozu, and Tenshinhan die for nothing and it's a waiting game from there. Problem is that the three huge arcs after it all play the same waiting game for Goku to save the day. Even though Cell has Gohan wrap things up, it doesn't change that the arc up to that point had basically been telling us that none of this shit matters until Goku gets involved. The bait and switch is appreciated but comes too late. Dragonball becomes waiting for someone you like to do something stupid. This has carried over into Super, where the writers seem to think this is something we enjoyed about the original series.
