Maxx "C" is a monster card that you can discard from your hand, and for the rest of the turn you get to draw a card every time your opponent Special Summons. Generally, it's fairly powerful because your opponent is likely to Special Summon at least once a turn, if not multiple times in sequence, so most people use it to gain hand advantage.
However, there's a gag among players called the "Maxx C Challenge", where you try to force your opponent to draw their entire deck when they use Maxx C on you. As one guy said, it's basically the modern day version of the Revival Jam+Infinite Cards+Slifer loop, except it actually works in the real game.
Do people still have field dependent deck nowaday? I still remember when the umi deck was a thing.
>>160232822
There's a couple decks that rely on having their field, but there's much fewer of them and they're virtually nonexistent in competitive play.
>>160232850
Yeah, I thought so. The field zone is a decoration at this point.
>>160232979
I wouldn't go that far, but since Master Rule 3 (which allowed both players to control a field spell at the same time), Konami's been struggling hard with trying to figure out what they want Fields to DO. They can't decide if they want the fields to be just another Continuous Spell with its own zone, or if they want to go back to the old shit where both players can use the field.
This is my favourite deck to play with when i'm playing with my friends. I know it has a forbidden cards in it, but we prefer playing it with the well known cards from the original and GX. Not a fan of the new metas and cards, but that's just me.
>>160233655
the elemental heroes are also my favorite
>>160232237
Generally speaking, the Maxx C challenge is simply establishing a field so powerful that your opponent either cannot overcome it despite their card advantage, or you simply OTK them that turn.
>>160233655
At least it's Traditional legal. I know a faggot that is like "GX is my favorite and I only play HEROs because Jaden is the best protagonist and also I hate everything that has been released in the past 10 years because it's broken and stupid", then runs 3 Pot of Greed, 3 Stratos, and 2 Graceful Charity. With Dark Law.
Not liking the new stuff is fine and all, but why exactly don't you like it? I'm trying to collect opinions on the subject for a VERY IMPORTANT THING I'm working on related to the subject.
MY GRANDPA'S DECK HAS NO PATHETIC CAR-

>>160233962
Nostalgia plays a big role in that. Also i like the old school slow paced games more where as now(atleast i think it's still like this) it's more about trying to break your opponent's combos and the speed of the game just seems insane at times.
I remember when Cyber-Stein + Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon + Giant Growth would get you punched in the face. I can't imagine the rage that some of the bullshit in this thread would cause.
>>160224645

>>160234378
Of course you'd get punched for that. Giant Growth is an MtG card, and Heroic Growth is anime-exclusive.Did you think I wouldn't notice that
>>160234287
The game is a lot more combo-focused now, but ultimately competitive play hasn't changed at all from how it was originally. You still play the most broken thing you can afford and try to work around the opponent's broken thing.
>>160226552
But what does it do?

I don't understand XYZ at all. What exactly does this do for you? Because it looks like it just lets you throw shit in the graveyard to special summon more worthless cards with the same effect. Is it for setting up revival shenanigans or something?
>>160236310
It works like fusion, but you just need 2 or more monsters of same level and or specific type.
The monsters that you used turn into material for effects you can only use the effects when they have materials.
It's quite simple.
>>160229179
>>160229398
Wait a minute
Did you just summon a bunch of monsters in one turn?
>>160236310
Basically it's a summoning method you do by merging 2 monsters with the same level together and stacking them on top of each other. The monster Summoned is on the top of the stack and uses the cards under it like "ammo" for its effects. Zoodiacs are a really cancerous meta deck that can summon their Xyz monsters with only 1 monster and it leads to a lot of disgusting single card combos/loops
>>160236424
Yeah, so?
>>160236310

>>160236575
>So you're essentially stacking monster effects like equipment
No, you just detach as a cost.
XYZ are basically strong effects you can only use a limited number of times.
>>160232237
>it's basically the modern day version of the Revival Jam+Infinite Cards+Slifer loop

Pic related, I came to /a/ to ask how Yugi already knew that Kaiba had a God Card.
>>160236503
Screw the rules i have money
>>160236575
Detach is a cost, and some cards get destroyed without material, also the material cards don't count as being on field, so they don't trigger effect bar very few.
>>160229609
Starting with ZEXAL, the anime felt extremely tame compared to the real game. Instead of the combos you see in real life, it's all getting one really strong monster on the field or pulling off OTKs with cards that are useless in any other situation.
>>160236594
Okay, got it. So take Jinzo- if he was an XYZ I'd have to detach a material card of an equal level in order to activate its ability to negate traps?
>>160229398
kek
>>160232822
They weren't really ever a thing, even in casual play you only ever built a Umi deck for the sake of building a Umi deck. I'd gladly play any serious deck from even as far back as 2002 against pretty much any Umi deck. As for field dependent decks in general, that's a far bigger topic than I can cover in a single post.
>>160234922
Jinzo hasn't been relevant since early 2004.
>>160236707
You need monsters at same level to make xyz monster anyway, but yeah you need detach 1 material to activate the effect, without materials the monster is just some beatstick.
are synchros still relevant? i really liked plant synchro/plant tengu. dropped the game after windup bullshit
>>160236575
If it makes it any worse for you there's a things such as "rank up" spells/monsters. Xyz monsters have Ranks which are the opposite of levels, and some monsters can be straight up Xyz Summoned onto another Xyz monster if it's allowed in the effect (and the card used as overlay material and every card below are turned into Xyz material). For example, if you have a Rank 5 Cyber Dragon Nova with 2 Xyz units, for absolutely free you can stack a Cyber Dragon Infinity on it and have it on the field with 3 Xyz units. Zoodiac Xyz monsters can be summoned by using ANY Zoodiac monster, including stacking your entire extra deck onto 1 card turn 1.
>>160236203
There's some advanced rulings regarding infinite loops that don't terminate, but for anything that does terminate it's fine.

>>160236822
>>160236835
It's a bit complicated, but still a pretty neat concept. It does sound like the sort of thing that the whole game should be based around, instead of being awkwardly introduced into a game with entirely different rules. With that, pendulums, and such, modern Yu-Gi-Oh is starting to sound like the TCG equivalent of Capcom vs. SNK, with multiple different rule sets all competing against one another.
>>160236971
Ruling for card games always sound complicated, but in reality is pretty damn simple.
Sure there is some obscure ass ones, but most casual players don't run into.
>>160236971
The thing is, 99% of meta decks run at least one Xyz monster regardless of what summoning method the deck is supposed to be focussed around because of how ridiculously easy they are to make. Pic related is pretty much a staple in every Extra Deck.
>>160236971
Honestly each deck's playstyle just dances around how well they can dodge the rules and do what they want.
Kaijus are like having a set up battle between 2 monsters from your deck and giving your opponent the shitty onebut instead people tech the shitty ones because you summon it by tributing opponent boss monsters
Zoodiacs broke yugioh
True Dracos and Monarchs pretend extra decks don't exist and play around tribute summoning
Paleozoics play around monsters that are also trap cards
Artifacts are literal monsters that are set like trap cards and get effects off of being destroyed in the spell/trap zone
And those aren't even the crazy ones

>Link Summoning messed up my Blue-Eyes deck
You do realize that Blue Eyes is a very good deck in Link format, solid T2.
Let me tell you what killed Yu-Gi-Oh. It wasn't synchros or xyzs, or even pendulums, it was archetypes and deck searching cards. Those things were part of the game from early on, but they weren't as essential/ubiquitous as they are now. Archetypes remove all need for creativity in building a deck, which is really the most important part of the game. Indeed, they discourage it, because they're designed to be better than anything you could make with generic cards. While Konami has banned classic cards like Pot of Greed for being overpowered with not enough cost, plenty of archetype cards are far more overpowered and the cost involved is not an in-game one, but a meta one: having to chain your deck to an archetype and buy a lot more cards to make it useful. Deck searching isn't as bad, but it still feels to me like it takes some of the fun out when you don't have to rely so much on the luck of the draw. Of course, this goes hand in hand with archetypes, because many archetypes are based around setting up a specific combo or summoning a specific monster(s) and can't do shit unless you get the specific cards needed for it to work. In the old days, even if you had a main strategy in mind, decks had to be more versatile because you couldn't count on drawing certain cards. Also, anything that special summons directly from the main deck can fuck right off.
>>160237961
I've heard as much; I more upset because it booted out my favorite ED cards. I still have to look at which Link cards work well, though.

Exodia never was good.
HAT is a T1 deck at best.
You forgot Entermate Entermage the most degenerate deck of all time. Full-Power Qli, Inzektors, Full-power Necloth, Goats and Chaos bullshit were also functionally tier 0
Let me tell you what T0 means.
T0 means that you play this one deck, the deck that is T0 or you fucking lose.
In Dragon Ruler format you either played Dragon Rulers or Spellbooks. Spellbook was the Tier 1 deck of the format. If you played Spellbooks you beat everything that wasn't the mirror or Dragon Rulers. And Dragon Rulers just demolished you. That's what Tier zero is. A deck that is much, much better than the tier 1 decks.
>>160237790
No, that would be Zoodiac.
Another contender are Dark Matter Rulers, only because they're stupidest OTK deck you can imagine.
>>160238004
>Archetypes remove all need for creativity in building a deck, which is really the most important part of the game
I think HAT was quite the creative deck, or EmEme, all the Invoked variants.
Even full power Zoodiac is a mess of a deck, really. You had to fit the Zoodiac core, the Terrortop engine, the Fusion Sub Engine and outs to the boards Zoodiac might make.
It's absolutely insane.
>>160238374
Zoodiac Summoner was cute too
>>160238259
The current Link archetypes are pretty much entirely irrelevant to the meta right now, although most meta decks are forced to run a couple of ED Link monsters by necessity. Current meta is True Dracos (Tribute Summoning), often with Spellbook engine or Invoked (Fusion) engine, also Dino Yang Zings (Synchro/Main Deck)/True King Dino Yang Zings(Synchro/Main Deck) and ABC's (Fusion).
>>160238418
Zoodiac goes with everything
>>160238259
>Does it has the best meta at the moment though?
You can't compare Links with anything else. Because of the new game rules, you HAVE to use Links if you are an extra deck user (unless you are one of the rare deck types that really don't need more than 1 Extra deck monster on the field)

The reason that particular banlist exists is the entire limited spell card section.
If you waste 15 of your 40 cards on things that functionally do absolutely nothing you really only have yourself to blame if you lose.
Even if multiples of exodia were legal, nobody who wanted to play this fucking deck would ever consider playing multiples of it, because exodia is not good, you don't want to draw them unless you draw all of them.
Haven't keep up in a long time, is Shadoll still viable? I still have Shadoll Star seraph deck irl

Big difference. Are you gonna tell me That Dark Hole, Raigeki, and trap hole were the SOLE reason for the banlist?
>>160238890
Wow, it's almost like Exodia got limited after the first banlist, meaning that it was NOT the reason for the banlist! Imagine that!
Do other games like MTG chunk out new mechanics every 2 years like YGO?
>Monster summon mechanics, spell/trap, fusion, field, some other basic rules

Yes? Generally the cards that are on the first banlist are in fact the reason for the banlist. Unless you have proof that they decided to make a banlist because of Exodia but kept the Exodia pieces off of the first banlist for some reason.

Magic has new abilities and whatnot in every set, but powerwise it gets weaker rather then stronger, Mostly to do with how the tournament format goes (you only play with the sets from this and last year pretty much, and every new year, some old sets get sorted out, not to say there are like million ways to play mtg unlike Ygo).
Cardfight Vanguard didnt do it for the start, but Grade 4 killed it for me. Just like Linkz did it for YGO for me.
>>160238707
>>160238747
>>160238973
A) The Banlist was never made with the sole intent of removing Broken Cards from the pool. It is made for that but it's also made to push new product as well as keep games fun. That's why shit like pic related is banned. Exodia was never even that good but people complain when they lose to it.
B) Once again, A REASON not THE reason. Even if you have an Idea of cards you have in mind to ban you wouldn't ban them all at once. Exodia got banned with the very next list. there is no way konami wasn't thinking about several cards that weren't banned in the first list while making it.

>>160239557
OCG has some cards hat are only available there, same for TCG.
Remember X-Saber? That 4Star 1900 ATK stick was the reason it was even playable and an actually good deck, in the TCG never got printed in the OCG (it was, just years later when even full power X Saber was shit), so the TCG had other top tier decks then the ocg at a time.

Zoodiac.
it doesn't matter that it's not as good, the sheer resilience of it is on the level of Dragon Rulers.

Yeah but why? They both have cards printed in multiple languages right? So why not print the same cards in Asian and Western countries?
>>160239625
They've always been floating between T1 and T3.
The last good HERO deck was Awesome HERO (no, really that's what it was called) and it was pretty good, but unfortunately there were other decks which were much, much stronger and Kaijus were around, it wasn't really notable.
Still a solid T2 deck, though.
>>160239625

>>160239826
1. To keep things fresh. TCG and OCG exclusives keep the formats different so we're not just 100% copying the OCG format from 4 months ago.
2. Because The TCG and OCG are retards when it comes to communication. That's why rulings suck so bad and judges can fuck you so easily in this game (Crab king vs Towers). It's so bad that OFFICIAL OCG rulings are not usable in the TCG which NEVER publish any rulings. It's why Kaiser Colosseum had to die. TCG didn't want to bother with Rulings for Kaijus.

I don't recall a tournament after them being hit with Necloth making up the entire top 32.
Zoodiac is canceous in a more literal sense of the word. It's not quite as strong as the strongest deck, but it's just neverending and it enables so many ridiculously degenerate plays.
That is what makes Zoodiac the most cancerous deck in existence.

>>160229474
Not anymore, new rules were introduced last weekend. Now you need Link Monsters to summon Extra Deck Monsters outside of the Extra Monster Zone, but there are ways around that.
>>160236166
Whilst the dredge card is in your graveyard, you can replace any single draw with "put the top X cards of your library into your graveyard" to return the dredge card to your hand, where X is the number on the card.
So if you play a card that lets you draw 2 (like Jar of Iwantmore), then you can instead replace 1 of the draws to dump the top 6 off your library to pull Golgari Grave-Troll from your graveyard.
It led to some super-degenerate decks in the eternal formats (the ones where all the cards ever, or near enough, are allowed), some even having a "turn 0" win (beginning a game-winning combo the literal first possible moment once a game begins).

>>160245682
You did not.
Kaijus were around since Clash of Rebellion, with them getting Slumber in Breakers of Shadow, which incidentally is the same set Cyber Dragon Infinity was released in.
Granted, people weren't really invested in the Kaijus back then, because there was no way to search them out until Slumber, but at the time this board was made people absolutely were able to break it with Kaijus.

It's mostly his fault for being greedy and Maxx C'ing when the opponent could still decide to synchro spam him to death
If you let your opponent believe you didn't start with a Maxx C in hand you can activate it after he passed the chance to start an infinite loop. Revealing it as he starts a non-flexible sequence and he has nothing but useless summon fodder on the field is probably ideal from all points of view: he can't switch plans and he can't abort and wait for next turn since he played half his hand already (don't worry that you will miss out on some extra cards by not activating it ASAP, the benefits of drawing more greatly diminish after the first 3 or so if your deck is well-built.) Of course you need to be at least somewhat familiar with his deck. Same goes for cards like Veiler or Ghost Ogre: don't use them to interrupt his very first monster, use them at the most annoying moment, which is generally after he cycled through half his extra deck and used up most of his hand.
>>160246572
>It's mostly his fault for being greedy and Maxx C'ing when the opponent could still decide to synchro spam him to death
No, it was his fault for not running Ghost Ogre or even fucking Effect Veiler.
If you throw either of those onto the librarian, he's safe and wins next turn with the card advantage.
>>160246707
He can hardly be faulted for that when Majespecters almost never have handtraps other than Maxx C in their main deck, and they rarely have them even in their sidedecks besides Cs and now Ghost Reaper.
>>160247201
3 Ogre and as many Maxx "C" as you can go into everything. Nowadays it's 3 Cherries too.
>>160247241
Noob spotted. No one is playing 3 cherries and 3 ogres. Wtf are you babbling about?
>>160247241
I insist that Majespecters are less likely than most to run anything other than Maxx C in the main deck but whatever. Deck-building arguments aside, there's an ideal time to drop Maxx C and "when your opponent plays his first card" is rarely the correct answer, especially when there's a good chance he can punish you for it.
>>160246034
Arc-V didn't deserve this.
>>160234922
Some people side deck him but ultimately he doesn't see play because traps aren't super relevant (due to them being slow cards). His support was incredibly disappointing.
If he were level 5 I feel like he might see some use in Cyber Dragon decks.

My friends and I play casual format with quite a few house rules and it makes the game a lot better. Other than rule changes, we don't run any meta decks or turn 0/1 win decks, and generally just try to make decks that have a "theme", like Earth Warrior of Water Shark. I can't imagine playing Yugioh in modern format with official rules/format. Seems like it'd just be too much to deal with to not have any fun playing. Especially considering how kids at the local comic shop tourneys almost exclusively play turn 0/1 win decks.
