Stuff like the goblin lord, goblin heroes, etc are rare as fuck to the point that even most silver ranks have only heard about them in rumors before. I don't think even goblin slayer has actually seen one before. The current situation is not normal at all, normally goblins are comparatively weak little shits that live in caves and ruins while occasionally making raids on remote farms and traders and the absolute worst you usually deal with is a hob goblin or a shaman with minor magical abilities.

And goblins actually used to be weak, recently the dark god revived and all his stuff got a power boost (hence demons attacking the capital). The goblins reputation as being beginner tier hasn't fully gone away yet since goblins are mostly in remote regions like this frontier town.

This also bothers me to no end because apparently most Goblins stay small, but some inexplicably get fucking huge when they become champions which we still don't know how or why it happens.

That being said, I still enjoy both the manga and the novel. It has some pitfalls in logic, but that's about what you'd expect from a D&D based series and it's still entertaining enough despite that.

Goblin Slayer's autism is a miracle of the universe.

Actually from what I heard the entire setting is pro demi human goddess against evil god.
They play DnD in that world.
The have their player characters whose stats they influence, but can because of free will only slightly adjust in what they do besides that.
Priestess and Hero girl are pro DH gods PCs, while Maou is the evil gods PC, but evil god gets his faith bonus from goblins.
Goblins are normaly not that strong, but the evil god is buffing them because of the boost he gets from them.
Both abdone a PC once it gets involved with GS, because to them he is an NPC, but his entire build is ridiculously fucking over them and their influence.
Someone described it as his build being so focused on goblins as nemesis that whenever he and goblins are involved he will always be above 20 on rolls.
Thus they lose the influence over the chars, that is why the DH goddess abdoned the priestess as a PC.

This may come as surprise but getting hit, even while wearing plate, can still hurt and leave you with bruises and potentially broken bones depending on what you get hit with. technically your shield would have a gambeson because your shield arm would be wearing one but your absolutely right that armor is designed to deflect everything except direct hits. the problem you run into with using plate armor without a shield is that you are more likely to receive direct hits(which have a higher chance of injuring you) without a shield to block for you.

I just want to reiterate that im not arguing that a shield is better then armor or that armor is useless, just that by using both in tandem you cover the few weaknesses of using a shield or plate armor individually and have a strong/viable setup for fighting humans/little gobbos

With a shield, you're more likely to use the thing instead of either a two handed weapon or else wise. A situation where someone would block or shield bash, they would do something else like use their paldrons & shoulder bash. A fair number of weapons got better reach and carrying a shield is unnecessary when you are sufficiently armored. Big shields are for people in formation and/or less armor.

Using both together is unnecessary to the point of carrying two shields. Besides hooking a shield away, some massive tower shield would be inconvenient to lug around. A simple kite shield could get in the way. Just go with a two handed weapon. It's a fantasy world. Beyond spears & polearms, there's bound to be large busterswords or something else people use instead of a zweihandler. Take advantage of the lesser need for protection and use a two handed weapon.

Cost wise, a cheap spear helps far more than a cheap sword. Besides, if you can afford full plate, you have to have some money. By that point, you've got enough to afford others. A warrior should consider packing multiple weapons for multiple purposes if they're some adventurer. Doesn't need to be too flashy. A backup dagger for example.

Unlike a two handed weapon, smaller shields can be used to bash but they're not designated weapons. If someone is so afraid of getting hurt that they still carry a large shield in full plate, I say stay away from enemies.

A magical two handed weapon can be good. If people are just going to enhance everything, bigger weapons can be enhanced too. If you're going with a shield like that, it'd imply you actually need it & that you aren't armored enough to not need it. Maybe enhance armor.

Cheap spears can do well. Less training, superior range, etc. Just try to keep some distance. Enemies won't always come one by one. Swords tend to be a jack of all trades and a master of none compared to specialized stuff anyway.

It's adding unnecessary extra defence when you could use the extra freed wiggle room for offence. A living enemy is an enemy that can do harm. A larger weapon can have greater range, keeping yourself safer by being further from the enemy, & deal more damage. A shield has been used for bashing plenty but a two handed weapon can do a lot.

It's a more cost efficient solution for the poorfag murderhobos. It's also not such a bad weapon. Staffs & spears aren't so bad. They're easier to learn, you may outrange your enemy & cheap. If you're fighting multiple enemies alone, I suggest something that's going to keep enemies farther. A small shield won't block anywhere as much as good armor.

I think i see where you are coming from now. I think you are overvaluing reach because while it is a powerful aspect to have in your favor, when your opponent closes the gap( and they WILL close the gap unless you kill/incapacitate them in those first few strikes because they can run faster then you can back up) you now only have one tool to attack/defend with and have less leverage/range of motion to get full power strikes off. This problem only gets worse if your opponent uses shield/one hander because they have two tools against your one allowing them to both attack and defend while the 2hander has to pick on or the other.

i also think you are over valuing 2hander damage as well. unless one found themselves fighting large fantasy creatures and needed to inflict bigger injuries, a 2h's increased ability to inflict damage is unnecessary against humanoid opponents. yes you can crush a limp, cleave a torso, maybe even break a weapon but these feats are rather overkill when a 1h can kill/injure with competitive efficency once it gets in range.

No, having an extra piece of defence when you're already decked out is pointless. You're already covered in protection which should be decent. You don't need another shield besides the one you're wearing and especially not something which takes up space better suited to improving your offensive abilities. Closing the gap isn't easy & many weapons like a zweihandler aren't just weapons used far away. A skilled spearman would know what two hands on a weapon can leverage. The shorter range of the other one wouldn't get close if skilled.

Given how the lady's strikes did little compared to Guts having one slash, the abilities of various two handed weapons, & how protection which could block a two hander would have an easier time taking on a one hander, besides the less effort needed from the user beside using the weapon, you can get more done. heavy armor, even plate, isnt enough to prevent direct hits from inflicting bruises, bones breaking, stamina loss, or pain in general( unless the armor super duper magically infusing or something). You stated before a couple posts up that the best defense is to never get hit in the first place. Using a shield is one way to accomplish this with equipment instead of dodging(assuming your fighting a humanoid of a relatively similar size). everything you block is not hitting you, which leads to less injuries and any shots that slip past your shield your armor will hopefully be able to absorb. not using a shield means your chances of receiving injuries from direct hits and projectile attacks skyrockets and that is too great of an opportunity costs in most situations.

Im not sure you appreciate how fucked a spearman in plate is against an opponent with a shield/1h(double fucked if the guy has plate too). you know the 21 foot rule that cops have for a gun vs knife right? now picture how fast a shieldman can get on top of a spearman when a spear has a range of 6-9ft instead of 21. if you didnt get a face thrust or a shin(if the guys in plate you wont pierce that greave) which are the only targets you have since the shield is blocking the rest hes gonna be on you. So what is the spearman to do? he could try to block with the shaft(hes gonna get hit eventually), he could push or leverage against the shieldman(he gets hit because hes not blocking), he could choke up on the spear if its a short spear and try to stab(unlikely to get past the shield at such a distance/hes still getting hit), or he could turn tail and run(best option). In a spear vs shield fight i would bet on the shieldman every time.

Read that paladins fight again. she deflected that greatclub with her shield, and took 4 fingers off one hand and another off the other with a riposte. so now the hob can only use 1 hand instead of two cutting the hobs strength in half. and she could just keep doing that over and over, blocking/deflecting and slicing a tendon, artery or limb. sure its not as flashy as a one hit kill but she woulda either bled that hob out or butchered it into pieces over time

You're basing your generalization off of a few scenarios. It's been stated in the LN and in the manga that there are far bigger threats to the kingdom than just goblins. With a shield, you might attempt to block. If you have good enough armor, you should rely on it & focus on attacking. Projectiles who can pierce armor may do the same for a shield. Get a good set, properly bulletproofed, & try to kill the opponent better. The sooner they're not able to attack, the better. If projectiles are so worrysome that the armor won't help, it's doubtful that a shield would.

If you're expecting the person to allow the spear to run through them, you can drop the spear with them through it as a last resort. There's so many reasons for why someone with a bullet in them can continue. Have you actually read about fighting with medieval weapons? How much leverage some weapons can have over a one handed one? If both are armored in plate, people will die of laughter at the person having a shield. A spearman wouldn't need as much training until a usable level. Not to mention that unless wood is really that expensive, the spear can be cheaper too. The spearman might afford a shield too. Either that or given some can afford plate, go for another two handed weapon like a two handed sword. Those swords can deal some damage.

Most fireballs do not pierce and in the case of fireball explosions having a shield is way better than relying on armor because it'd only cook your arm instead of your entire body.

No matter how you look at it, the latter is far heavier in exchange for better overall protection. Shields are superior in less open spaces and is historically proven. The reason knights abandoned shield is cause they never needed to box people in and shit, and basically ran them over with cavalry and also mainly fought peasants or merely another knight 1v1. In those conditions naturally a 2H is superior there's no denying that, but you're flat out retarded at making extreme statements like there's no exceptions when historically even facing against just humans there were clearly cases of shields being better.

There's no point in arguing further, extremists who can only back their words with superficial words against the already established facts will never be taken seriously except by those of their own ilk. No, people abandoned shields for a while because wearing a big suit of armor was like having a shield all over your body & it freed their hands to use other weapons. A good set of plate would take a bullet & leave its wearer alive. A shield isn't needed. If it's a big one, it'd be heavier & make people question why you have both a lot of armor & that. If it's a smaller one, people would ask why you didn't go for something else. As armor got bigger & better, shields got smaller & eventually far less used. They needed shields much less when they're decked out in plate.

Knights have other people with them & they didn't have as much risk of death in some cases. Why kill when you can ransom that guy? Armored people also consisted of people on foot & the average man at arms wasn't exactly a super rich man. He could be a mercenary. They still went for pikes in formation & two handed swords in an attempt to knock them away. Plenty of people weren't armored horsemen.

hooking a shield is only useful in group combat because your buddy with polearm/spear will attack the shieldman while his shield is down. in 1v1 if u hook the shield it does nothing but give the shieldman more time to get in on you because in order to hit the shieldman after hooking u have to pull your polearm back to get enough momentum to swing at which point the shield just lifts his shield back up. also shields cant knocked aside if they are strapped to the arm( if they are center gripped then yes they could) and even if you did knock the shield out of the way with a huge baseball bat swing with a polearm you cannot swing again faster then he can reraise his shield.

another reason using a shield with plate is beneficial the economics of it. if you rely on your armor to tank it will get dented/damged more often as well as you receiving more injuries. this means more maintenance fees, recovery time, and longer time between quests tanken/paydays gotten. using solely armor to tank could cause you to abandon a quest prematurely if your plate joint(such as an arm/leg which is critical for movement) gets severely dented by an enemy's lucky shot whereas if your shield gets dented you dont really care and can continue

and because you asked, while i have not read about medieval fighting, i (and hate to be that guy and even bring this up) practice armored combat as a sport(SCA). i practice sword/shield and polearm so im just arguing what ive experienced in the matchup and what ive seen done in the tournys(shield/sword wins the vast majority of the time, sometimes a godly flourentine will win).

You ever hook a shield away? It can leave the enemy open. A shield can be knocked away like anything attached to an arm. It's heavier than just an arm but arms move & so do the shield. Even >>160194394 shows an arm getting knocked away when the shield splits.
Bring the thing back? Last time I checked, some people stabbed with a polearm like it's any other spear & the pulled back as an attack due to the axe head. Some people do loads of crap after hooking. People don't swing polearms like it's a baseball bat. You've been playing too many video games.

A shield gets dented & scratched too. It's another piece of equipment to maintain. It's another weight to carry & unlike armor, it isn't something worn over the entire body. By some point, plate got good enough that the shield wasn't needed. The inconveniences of having a shield outweighed the benefits when you have good plate.

I suggest doing some reading on medieval fighting. No rules, no points, just two people bashing each other with their weapons until dead. Things are surprisingly well documented.
