It's a fine way to start, but sooner or later you're gonna need to grind vocabulary. It takes a vocabulary of at least 10 or 15 thousand to be able to read somewhat comfortably.
I'm certainly not great at Japanese, the more I learn the farther I realize I have to go. My advice is just that you need to put in a lot of time if you're serious about it at all.
