I always thought Kadokawa's last-minute decision for the Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi to be a movie rather than part of the second season and KyoAni taking the blame for having to fill the air time with what they could arrange on short notice (ie the different iterations of Endless Eight) was the primary source of bad blood, and therefore KyoAni's decision to be more independent. I could of course be wrong; not many other people seem to subscribe to that theory. Nichijou may have had more to do with it, or might have just have been the last straw. Comedy is fine on manga, not on anime, all of your mentioned franchises sell well primarily because of their manga sales. Only Osamatsu's sales figures are in the big boys league for anime.

Also, One punch and gintama are clearly not pure comedies. So the only real example is Osomatsu kun.

Comedy just doesn't translate well to anime.The most enduring comedy anime franchise is probably Shin-Chan, and when they do their annual movie releases, they dramatically shift the tone towards serious drama and themes.

I didn't realise it bombed. I think it's the funniest anime I've seen so far, after Joshiraku. Still, I don't see it as all that eastern. While the window dressing is completely Japanese, a lot of the humour seems to rely on ideas that aren't particular eastern (for example, the long payoff gag attached to the eraser story). It also takes a couple of viewings before you get into the mindset, it doesn't give off it's secrets all at once.

Would score 8/10 very easily and if I'd recently seen more likely a 9. Most of my other enjoyed anime come in at 6 or 7.

I liked it in general and the characters too, but in my honest pleb opinion it felt like it was going nowhere. And I say that acknowledging it was a slice of life show.

Even for a slice of life show the feeling of it going nowhere was too much.

I think it's doing well for Funimation, probably because their release is $50 for the whole thing and not $500 split into two-episode chunks.

Ironically enough it went further than a lot of slice of life shows, tons of characters got development, and lots got more depth than they would in any other show, which is impressive considering the size of the cast. Compare Nano at the end to herself at the beginning, or especially Mio. Or that mohawk kid, who not only has that whole relationship with his father, but also his skepticism thing going on. Or even the Airship scenes which manage to tell a story.

Thinking about it, I think it's completely the opposite of what you said. Few of the episodes, if any, are just fluff and don't do anything to advance at least one character's story or develop interactions between characters more.

I found most of Nichijou unfunny, but I really enjoyed watching the mostly normal characters go through their every day lives with slightly strange/unreal things happening. It was comfy in a way.
