It was a misunderstanding. He expected his publishers to pay the taxes, but wasn't aware that he had to until he was told. So he paid them and all was fine.
The tax news story is legitimate clickbait. When it broke out the taxes were already paid and the issue was resolved.

LH started interesting, but it went out of steam long before the end of season 1. Everything went to the dogs when the kids became main characters. The show, and the LN, should have ended for good before the festival and this dumb SoL 'love interest triangle comedy' and 'Shiroe is evil because hikikomori' thing. LH never recovered after that point. Season 2 just made it worse.

I don't blame DEEN for this. They made the best you can make out of the source material they had.

To sum up why Log Horizon was better, it didn't drop the ball with world building. I remember how hype the battle royale potential of SAO source material was, and the discussions of how anime interpretation should turn out. It went for the safe pre-teen demographic approach, we all knew it after the 1st episode excluded introducing Sword Arts. Was a sad shame.
