Do you think Naoko Yamada (Keion, Tamako Market, Tamako Love Story, Koe no Katachi) is a good director? Why or why not?
>>160054706
He's competent at getting information across visually, and the scenery is nice, that's commendable though he isn't particularly outstanding creatively.
Kyoani has definitely seen better directors.
>>160054973
oh my bad, still, they're he're it's not really relevant. also neck yourself for using emoji
I want to see what she can do with a longer production time. 3 months is too short for a movie, don't you think?
>>160056880
She did back in the Keion movie days. That took more than 5 months of preproduction only.

I fucking love everything she touches and she pretty much changed the way I saw anime. They way she builds her characters' personalities, shows how meaningful interactions between people are, and match character body language with their personality she built from the ground up draw me in so easily that I could perpetually watch all of her stuff over and over again and never get bored.

Koe no Katachi was a step up from the rest. I went into it without having read the manga. I didn't understand the first person perspective until the ending and it was pleasant to rewatch the beginning scenes. Pretty stuff she does.
She's gone downhill since K-On. She excelled at CGDCT and TV series where there's plenty of time to bond with the characters, but Tamako Love Story and Koe no Katachi are Shinkai tier.

>with their personality she built from the ground up
All of her works are based on manga she didn't write you fucking moron.
>>160054706
She is a hack, like everyone else at KyoAni.
>>160063560
Tamako is original, but K-on and Koe you're right about.
>>160059379
You're trying too hard.
>>160063560
Tamako Market is original and K-On characterization is greatly expanded from the manga
>>160063560
It seems to me that she takes the core ideas of the characters, but puts meaning behind them. She doesn't merely adapt, she rebuilds them from the ground up.
Of course, I don't know what she actually thinks when she's working, I could be completely off, but I get the sense that she really understands people with all their flaws yet sees their flaws as what makes them great. Even Koe no Katachi felt extremely optimistic in its presentation.
>>160063655
>You're trying too hard.
Not trying, 100% genuine. Yamada legitimately changed my life.
>>160063689
>expanded from the manga
She didn't fucking create the characters or "build their personality from the ground up."
She didn't even write Tamako Market or do the character design for it, she just directed it.
Giving her credit for the characters in her work is completely retarded. It was a meaningless empty thing to say, so that you would sound like you had some insight into her work, when you don't. You're just some shitposting moron.

Maidragon's problem was a source material that was, while good enough, not great for an anime adaptation. However it took what it had and excelled with it. The visual attention to detail, and foreshadowing of gags, taking a gag show and turning it into a cute heart warming feels fest while still keeping the comedy.

She worked very closely with Yoshida and Horiguchi. However, even when they aren't involved (Hibike) the characters still feel the same, so it's fair to give her most of the credit
>>160064088
You should read interviews before you chimp out for no reason.
>>160063607
why?
>>160064491
What interviews?
>>160054706
Alright director.
>>160064491
>You should read interviews
No thanks, that sounds like a huge waste of time.
>>160071213
Yeah, I'm also a nigger.
