Regardless of whether it's anime or Western BS, there are so few shows that focus on the characters. I mean, REALLY focus on them. Why do I have to waste my time watching some unintersting nonsense about [insert some topic the show is build around]. That should just be a means to an end, i.e. to flesh out the characters are more. Yet, we almost always get very little insight into the character's psychy, wheras tons of time is spend on superficial nonsense.
Let's be honest, don't we all watch anime (or anything else) to get to know fictional characters? So why do shows waste so much time on superficial shit instead of showing us the thoughts and feelings of characters nonstop?

Because writing doesn't sell. Hyouge Mono, House of Five Leaves, Tsuki ga Kirei just name some recent titles all flopped from a sales perspective. Why? Because most people will consider well written charaters to be boring or simply dont bother trying to understand them to begin with. You want sales? You go for good visuals, moe, plain jokes paired with moe or "hype" sequences. If you think that the average viewer is in this for the writing then youre delusional. Plenty of people on this board openly state that writing (especially wheb it comes to movies) is the least important aspect.

If I were to be honest I would have to say that I watch anime so that I could understand doujins.
>don't we all watch anime
I don't watch anime. I AM anime.

There's an entire genre centered around that. What you plotfags call "moeshit".
