The remake impressions sometimes shit on the 70s series, but it looks original and funky. Shin just turned out to be like every 90s OVA.

Ok anons, I watched Dominion and while funny it also made me a bit sad, for personal reasons.
I have to think for a while, and already started New Dominion to try to find more meat there to digest before giving my opinion. But one thing I can already say for sure, Leona is the Scum of the Earth.

I finished watching all the seasons of Slayers now I'm onto the movies and ovas.
Some hare-brained shitstove decided to crop the movies because muh 16:9 and chopped off the top of everyone's head.
Also why is Slayers the whole group in t.v. shows but the ovas and movies are just Lina and Naaga?
>>
>>160021102
Because the OVAs are based off the Slayers Special novels which only have Lina and Naga, while the TV series is based off the main Slayers novels which have the other companions.
>>

Salamander was some fun stuff though I wouldn't say Gunbuster ripped it off.

Twilight Q. Is it just me or is the second OVA quite influential? Or is the idea of a child god living in her own world something much older than both this and Haruhi?
>>
>>160024248
I think that was the concept of a Twilight Zone episode, though that in turn may be based on some short story. Twilight Q may have introduced it to the nips tho.

Jeena was cool, but they couldn't make their minds up on how she was supposed to look. Shame they never completed it, there was originally going to be 5 instead of 3.

>>
>>160019881
Finished off Utena and Utena's youth recently, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Revolutionary Girl Utena suffers a bit if one marathons it, so if anyone is looking to watch it, make sure you pace out the episodes to one or two a day at maximum. Also, prepare to have your heart broken.

I've been moving through Kenshin as well, and I'm actually having a blast, even though I spoiled things a bit by watching Trust and Betrayal first. It would be just perfect if the fights weren't so lazily choreographed, but I guess one can't have eneverything

I've taking my time finishing Escaflowne.

I barely remember stuff from when I was a kid except that if Van transformed Escaflowne into a dragon he would die.

And well, that didn't happen because I'm on episode 16 now and he's been transforming the Escaflowne all the time.

Might be something from the finale.

Also the music is fantastic.

I rewatched EoE today because of it's 20th anniversary. Fuck me, it's still one of the greatest animated films of all time.

One thing I find strange about EoE though is how much in terms of timing and SFX changes between the sub and dub. I actually prefer the way some scenes are paced in the dub version, but not others and the same goes for the sound effects. Still, I wonder why these alterations occurred to begin with?

Something fish here... I watched Patlabor OVA, Movie 1 and 2, I'm watching Patlabor TV, almost at 20.
Why Division 1's team NEVER appears?
I'm starting to fantasize that Shinobu is actually a mad woman that just believes that she is part of the police and Goto being there is part of the ruse. Her rich and influential family arranged things to trick her, and Division 2 fuckery aids the illusion of efficiency that her division have. They never have the opportunity to destroy things because they don't existe and she likes to believe she is the best in her job.

Honestly, I found Oniisama e to be refreshing since it doesn't romanticise high school like the majority of anime does and instead portrays it as a horrible dog-eat-dog place.

The melodrama doesn't work quite as well when it's set in 1970's Japan as opposed to 18th century France though.

Dezaki, the most hyped and probably the most over-rated director of the century, upped the ante for studio trickery. He had begun as a third-rate disciple of Tezuka, and shows such as Ashita no Joe (1970) that were cauldrons of shonen cliches. Then Ace o Nerae (1973) happened and the word "chic" took on a new meaning. The anime was a masterpiece of faux avantgarde (of pretending to be avantgarde while being generic shoujo). It was, more properly, a new link in the chain of production artifices that changed the way anime "looks": Anno's Gunbuster, Ikuhara's Revolutionary Girl Utena

I'm currently watching ZZ gundam honestly just for completion's sake. After this I'll have seen every UC iteration of the franchise. I'm on episode 17 right now and I understand the rep it gets. So far I haven't felt it was too terribly comedic, except for a few goofy moments. Its just incredibly shitty pacing. Moon Moon was so fucking stupid. The characters in ZZ fucking suck as well. That's the thing though, you'd expect fans of 'modern' SoL and idol shows to go apeshit over old mahou shoujo if they knew what it was, but that never happens.

Its weird because, let face it, the trend here to praise moeshit shows above all else is a meme, but in principle the genre is capable of being great, and magical girl shows do a better job of realizing this than any 'proper' straight SoL series.

I think you overestimate how many younger people can tolerate old shows. "It's old and looks like shit", probably keeps most people away. You're lucky if you get a younger fan of anime to watch the better animated and more visually appealing OVAs of the late 80s and early 90s. Personally I think girls from old shows can be just as cute as modern shows. Sometimes even more so because they're not trying so hard to make them so sickeningly sweet.

Another keyword is episode count, which is why it is hard to get someone from Otaku MG shows to watch even something as new as Precure.

They have low tolerance to the more wonky episodic bits, which is understandable to an extent, but there is no remedy to it. Skipping episodes could save you from watching something as dumb as Sally the Witch's Prince and the Pauper episode, but you could also miss the graffiti episode, which was wonderful.

They also really seem to prefer the current style of "fit as many quirks as you can in 20 minutes." so classic cuties don't seem to appeal much, considering they are far more casual about their oddity and don't yell their traits out.

Recently watched Dallos, aka the first ever OVA.
I was a bit disappointed considering it was directed by Mamoru Oshii. It felt pretty derivative of other sci-fi anime of the era.

Soundtrack was pretty good though.

So I'm on the fence about starting Kimagure Orange Road, however wanted to ask something. Is it autoconclusive? I mean the story starts and ends in the anime? The "latest" old series I watched was Maison Ikkoku and I l really liked that I could burn through it from start to finish and have a full story in those 90 episodes with the source just expanding a bit rather than filling blanks or continuing the story for many volumes.
And for some reason I feel Madoka.

>>160039772

I haven't seen the movies or OVAs yet, so I guess it hasn't concluded for me. It's basically just Toru Furuya being indecisive 80s dick. There's also nothing really special about it's art or animation other than the few times it goes really 80s on you.

Only seen two episodes of Maison, does it pick up or get really interesting beyond the lonely guy in boarding house lusts after the landlord?

>>160039875
>other than the few times it goes really 80s on you.
That's exactly what I'm after. As for Maison as many have said around here it's "Misunderstandings: the anime" and it has many moments where you want to punch everyone's face for being so stupid or obnoxious (like the other tenants) but I really liked this feeling that time does pass in-universe and how Godai slowly grows up. Also there are some instances where MC is based and you can't blame him for a lot of stuff later because he's always working hard and life just shits on him.
So in conclusion, yes it does pick up but it's long so it will feel many times that the story drags up and doesn't go anywhere until way later.

It's just an awful love triangle that seems to make no progress whatsoever. There's a lack of development for each character until the final couple episodes.
I'm telling you, if you want a good romance series watch anything Adachi wrote. Touch is probably the best romance series to come out of Japan, and its' recognized as such.
>>
>>160040326
It's been a long time since I attempted to watch it but from what I remember, the whole thing just looked really dull. Visually the colors are very muted even for its time, the characters look bland even though the manga art is much more vibrant. And it did this thing where a frame would shrink down and have a really large black border. It was an attempt to be stylish that just came off looking flat and dull. Worst of all the premise of them having super powers felt tacked on and the show has no excuse for being as boring as it was with all the potential for action that premise has.
>>
>>160040326
The only thing I didn't like about Maison Ikkoku was that the first time they show Kyouko with Souichirou she's like 18 or 19 and he sounds like he's about 50. I'm sure they realized that too because his voice sounds much younger later on, and it's suggested that even though she was still in high school he was probably only about five to ten years older than her.
>>
>>160034492
Gunbuster had such insanely good pacing. It handled the aging of characters incredibly well, and it made me feel for the poor pilot girls. Last episode was a trip too. I watched NGE before Gunbuster and it's really cool to see just how much transitioned

Checked satan. Well, I actually envy Souichirou, he was living the dream no matter how old he was but I agree it did feel like he was way too old in many flashbacks compared to what he was supposed to be. Maybe it was just to accentuate the fact that compared to him Godai was an unreliable and unmature parter unfit to take Kyouko the way he was.

It was hinted in the manga way long before when Kazuya dates his junior and watch a movie with her that Minami wanted to see because he couldn't say no to her, and Minami instead of getting mad gets disappointed and tells him "You're not gonna live long, you're too kind"

Not sure if that happens in the anime and when.

>Is Tenchi in Tokyo any good?
There might be one or two shining moments in it, but the plot is "Tenchi goes to college in the city and leaves the girls at home, and finds a normal girl to date".
Except that the normal girl was some construct by some alien chick that looked about Sasami's age.
I never finished watching it ever since it ended it's first run on Toonami.
I still remember the end of the episode I left off on, the new girl was crying over a coffee mug in her empty apartment after she started to realize she wasn't real.
>>

>I actually made a Tenchi thread in morning but no one fucking posted and it died. I thought the series would be loved here
You sound pretty new. Tenchi threads have been pretty active, historically speaking. You'd do well to stop caring so much whether or not people post in your threads because that mentality doesn't lead anywhere good. Some threads get posts and some don't, it all depends on the time of day and the amount of people who are willing to discuss te series in question.

Slam Dunk was amazing, but I don't remember the art being as bad as OP image. I guess that's what happens when you watch anime when you're 10-years-old.

Also recommend the starter pack for younger viewers, like Detective Conan, Doraemon, Ikkyu-san, Hana no Ko Lunlun, Creamy Mami, etc.

I loved Saint Seiya and Tekkaman as a kid. Really recommend Sailor Moon as well.

Ultraman, while not anime, is great as well. Try Ace or Seven.

>never read the books
The books are the best, all adaptations are decent because the original material is that good but they're all lacking to the books.

It's just past the 2000s, but I've talked someone into binge-watching Read or Die with me this weekend. I heard last year there could be a new anime for it but no news since.
>>
>>160048850
Fair enough, I think most adaptations are lacking in some capacity compared to the source however. I've been reading up a bit on people's opinions of Anne's adaptions and I've seen a bunch say the anime is the best one out there. I can't really say because I've only watched this one.

I think I will eventually pick up the books just because of how much I've been enjoying the show, however!

I'd still recommend it. If you liked Maison Ikkoku, I think you'd like Orange Road too. They have a similar atmosphere, though KOR focuses more on the aspects of youth and slice-of-life fun.
It's half the episodes of MI, so in reality it isn't too long.
That being said I would recommend watching Touch and Miyuki as well.

As for how much the episodes conclude things, there is a definite winner at the end of the series. The movie provides more closure though.
>>
>>160051107
Thanks for the input anon, already took a peek at what is Miyuki all about and apparently I'll eventually start consuming many Adachi works. Might as well shuffle between the series and try them all slowly at the same time.
>>
Does Daicon III and IV count?
>>
>>160051462
No prob. I find all these shows to be pretty similar, in a "if you like one, you'll like the other" kind of way. What I like about Miyuki is it also explores the feeling of youth that KOR does.

Plus the music is god-tier. I don't know what it is, but Maison Ikkoku, Touch, Kimagure, etc all have excellent OPs/EDs. Omoide ga Ippai and Natsu no Mirage are probably my favorites. Touch OP2 gets me pumped up.
>>
>>160051910
The problem is they are all so similar and long as fuck. It's impossible to watch them back to back, they have to be spaced out by like a year at a time.

The manga's perfectly readable, if only a little long, and it's just pleasant, long running story about building motorcycles and the development of Belldandy and Keichi's relationship, with temporary magical pseudo-castration that disappears when they finally get romantically involved by the manga's end.
There is no actual NTR; any situations that look like it might turn out that way is quickly resolved with Keichi winning every time.

People keep saying that there's an issue with the sound with the BD release, what is it ?
>>
>>160073343
I don't know much about audio, but it sounds like there's an echo and its kind of muffled. Even having the volume up to 100% isn't enough, you need a sound system and that still doesn't fix the weird sounding audio.
>>
>>160073000
Yeah, but some of it was directed by Tsurumaki.

I remember watching some old OVA when I was really young but can't for the life of me remember its name or shit.

The only thing I remember is I think it took place in space, there were like three sisters and the MC kept falling in love with each but then they'd get killed by this space alien and he eventually got into a fist fight with the alien or whatever.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

The LDrips are the original releases, with all of the original animation. The DVD and BDs may look cleaner, but the redraws are just out of place and besides, LoGH was never a good looker of a series to begin with.

The BDrips might be worth it, I'm just saying that them using those redrawn digital masters, that can never be properly rescanned, over the original film prints was just dumb.
>>
I never watch old anime but I'm watching LOGH with my bf.

Its okay, not really worthy of the hype. So far the politics seem kinda hamfisted, like these really snotty nobles and evil nationalists. The fashion looks SO dated, obviously the empire has these olde time European costumes and then the Republic has these stupid "anime 80s" fashion. But its enjoyable enough and the main characters are good. The supporting cast is just dull though. And face expressions can come off as creepy.

I feel like it didn't kick in until Battle of Amlitzer Starzone, accompanied by Dvorak. After that, the gears start moving and most of the characters are in their places, and you start to recognize people and their roles.
>>
>>160075807
>the supporting cast is dull
Agreed.

It says a lot that they have to display a character's name on-screen every time they show up in a new episode. You'd forget who they were otherwise.

a LITTLE bit, yes. I understand it is the 80s vision of the future but they should have cellphones at least while they are on the home planet.

I was impressed by the self-driving taxi car though.

Also I got to see the scene with that "woman has lost her composure" line in it, which was interesting. Looking forward to getting to see the scenes where Wenli calls alcohol a "friend to humanity" or calls the black guy on his ship "that", etc. Important moments in meme history.

First cellphone was made in 70s, but either way, the lack of cellphones in the future makes it jarring, same as the 80s fashion. I am sure the anime of the present day will be jarring to other people watching in the future.
>>
>>160077165
LOGH is like Star Wars in terms of its setting, where it feels long ago yet in the future simultaneously.

It was definitely intentional, Reinhard feels like an old monarch from a few hundred years ago. Yang feels more WWII era IMO
>>
Shadow Skill movie and OVAs were decent, the OVAs had the better artstyle although the comedy kinda falls flat. The path to god ties to the battle system is interesting and I hope they expand on it and don't "subvert" it in the anime
