The world is ravaged by wars due to overpowered abyss artifacts, our protagonist lost both her parents to the abyss and is surrounded by similar orphans, and the orphanage has a torture room because it's really just a front to send kids into the first layer as child labor. And this is the nice part of town; they'll show the slums later and it's much worse. The abyss is as harsh as a place like that should be, but it's the people who are cruel. Not unjustifiably so, but the world's really not that nice. The characters are cute and that's it. Some people have a kneejerk reaction to tragedy and children, but there's no twist and I've never felt like MiA is riding on shock value. At its heart it's a good adventure story into an incredibly dangerous and beautiful place.
