Characters get "edgy" when their portrayal breaks the "rules" of our world by not having realistic consequences to his actions, for example needlessly violent character never getting called out on it but portrayed as a cool dude instead. Well yes, I probably should have specified Kei isn't that solidly on good-bad spectrum. There are some other characters too, like Tanaka.

Also I'm probably the only one who liked Kei more before the author switch. It might be just the slow release schedule but I'm having hard time grasping what kind of character Kei is supposed to even be at this point. This portrayal of somewhat muddled boy is probably more realistic, but before author switch his development was more straightforward and likeable.

One thing I don't get however is the fear for decapitation. I mean, Satou sold it very well, but all things considered when you get shot in the head a part of your brain must reconstruct, which means you get pretty much the same effect as when decapitated.
