The designs from season 1 were fine. They looked better in season 2, but I had more trouble telling the fucking characters apart due to them fucking with the hair styles and adding too much detail to the faces.

To be fair they did blow a lot of their budget on lighting and making sure character expressions are done properly, there's a LOT of subtle faces like a quick glance or reaction that you'd miss the first time

As others pointed out, only recently did they start doing decent.

I haven't bothered looking into it, but it is interesting to note that they almost did nothing at all for an entire year before konosuba and rakugo happened.

So it's possible some changes in staff or some sort of strategy was going on with the higher ups.

Don't get me wrong, the season 2 faces looked a lot better. But they spent too much effort making them look realistic and forgot that it's a cartoon and people need to tell the characters apart at a glance, especially if you're going to add that much more detail in the closeups when the wide angle shots make them look closer to season 1 designs.

I had a lot of trouble telling Yukina apart from her older sister, and in certain lighting, Yui and Iroha looked too similar.

Yeah, that's how bad it was. The ending with all that rotoscoping of J-drama-tier-acting was especially bad.
S1 one was bad animation-wise. Like, really bad. But it was good everywhere else. S2 was complete opposite, but they managed to make even designs and animation look bad, albeit in different way.

I had some sort of mixed reaction regarding the change in design.
On one hand, 8man's eyes looked more prominent in S2 (and fittingly so, considering how often it gets talked about in the show).
On the other hand, S2 Yukino is more derpy and looks like she's always on the verge of crying even before the drama started.
Yui looked mostly upgraded, but they don't show her undershirt straps in S2 and that kinda triggered my autism.

It also triggers me how there was a flashback on S2 about a scene that was overlooked on S1 where it should have happened, but it's harder to determine who should be blamed for that.
