Seph's color correction was mostly based off the first-run DVDs, before the Renewal remsater that oversaturated and fucked up a lot of colors. Particularly this scene in episode 16 that produced this shadow effect. In the old DVDs, Asuka's face was much more clearly visible in spite of the shadow.
Anno had the chance to fix things with the BDs, but chose to make them look as much like the Renewal release as he could for reasons incomprehensible to mere mortals.

The one on the left has a lot of digital modification to it, as well. The saturation is cranked way up, making the red bold, but crushing detail in the darker areas, like Asuka's arms and the door behind her.
Then a sharpening filter slapped on top of it to battle off the bleed that happens to oversaturated red.

The DVD looks DNR'd to hell. They left the grain in on the 2003/2015 which isn't a defect. 1997 is under saturated though. You can barely see the panel detail on the left side on that.

It's impossible to say. Once the Renewal remaster came out, it was seen as no point in having the old DVDs.
You'd probably have to dig through ancient, ancient Kazaa or Limewire torrent sites to get anything non-Renewal.
And then they'd be horribly compressed Real Media Player files in 120p scan. But at least they'd only be 45mb an episode.

Left looks like someone turned up the contrast slider in photoshop. You can't even see the shadow details on Asuka's arms. I like my blacks not crushed thanks.

Also post the full BD resolution you shithead, you're destroying information by downsizing it to DVD resolution for comparison, the BD has more detail by the fact that it is a much higher resolution alone. Posting "2003/2015" is also fucking disingenuous unless you're trying to imply the DVD and BD are equal resolution.

Someone at Disney got the bright idea that any grain at all is bad.
And SitS had a troubled production so while most shots are done with 35mm, as is normal for animated movies, some were done on 16mm and some even on 8mm.
Which means inconsistent grain levels and the fuckwits at Disney decided that rather than have a crisp, if grainy, video is worse than making it look like a blurred watercolor painting.

I disagree, if you look carefully enough you can see a loss in detail, look especially at the small detail lines, or look at the disappearance of the natural bumps and gaps in longer pen strokes when the grain is removed, like on the top of his right eyebrow in the second set of image comparisons, the denoise smooths the line out and fills small gaps.

It comes down to personal preference but I much prefer to have maximum detail even if it means there is grain.

So what release should I be watching? I downloaded the 2D4U a while back.
