Actually the fandom isn't as "cancerous" as the MaL one but l think that Gintama fanbase is one of the most decent and discret on /a/, not kidding. I mean Gintama is rarely mentioned on random threads and they're not so much frequent. And when one reach the bump limit, it's a fucking miracle. The threads of Gintama (2015) weren't so great, they died easily, there was some shitposting etc... But at the last season aired (2017, despite being short), the threads increased in quality, there was less shitposting, more comfier and more contribution (thanks to shipfags duh) and some of them reached the bump limit, and all this in a good mood (there were some little quarrels, but nevermind, they were really better) and even now I feel like manga threads are much better in terms of post they usually reach 80-100 posts, whereas they usually use to die at like 20 posts or something and I'm pretty glad. Heck, even a week ago a thread reached 500 posts, this one was good as well.

And since the manga is gonna end soon, I think threads will have even now more attractivity than before.

In short, I really like Gintama Fanbase and its threads even though they're not so perfect (like this one).

There's also the fact that MAL scores only count toward the average if you've seen 20% of the show's episodes, meaning that (in the case of the first season), someone who dislikes Gintama (4 or lower score) has to watch 40 episodes before their negative score impacts the average.
Gintama is so highly rated on MAL because the only people who have watched it are already interested in it in the first place, and MAL's flawed scoring system basically ignores all poor scores because it's a long series.
