>So this time we have a merchant and a princess?
There is a common theme between the two; that both were about someone who knew about the door and deliberately try to pass the knowledge down to a family member. The pasta sauce merchant considers the existence of the door his inheritance to his son, while the former Emperor only told his daughter about the door once a long time ago.

Oh I see I like that.

So the first episode was to show just how fantastical the customers got.
The second episode showed the infallibility of the cafe's existence against time.
And this one shows the doors seen as some sort of heritage those of the upper caste hide away only to send it down the grape vine to their heirs.

I'm diggin' these themed episodes.

Nice contrast between a Vegan Elf who complains too much, and a lizardman warrior who earned his right to eat at the restaurant by the laws of his tribe.

Seriously the elf chapter was annoying to me, but the chef was very much used to spoiled brats who think they are entitled to whatever.
>>
I hope you lads have something to eat once the episode drops.
>>

I have one "eating show" a season. I usually don't set up the TV tray in the livingroom for anime but one day a week there is often a slice of life show slow enough to enjoy over a meal.

Thus far it is really bad and I cannot recommend it unless you love slice of life. The characters are boring, the animation is campy, the actual setup of the situation is not particularly interesting, and too many of the conversations have no real humor or meaning to them. The fantasy elements serve only to make the show more campy and more obnoxious. I feel embarrassed even trying to watch it, since it is complete through and through junk.

Granted, SoL is my least favorite genre, but even in other SoL shows, I made it through at least 6 episodes. Here, I struggled with the first, skipped large parts of it, tried the second, and had to drop it. I guess if you really want something akin to background noise, this is a fine show for that purpose, but the food... also looks really ugly. The beef stew in ep1 looks like water, the food in general just appears unappetizing, like the coloring or lines/texture is just off in ways where you look at it and do not really feel hunger.

You could just watch one of those JP variety shows with girls eating food and saying oishii and you would probably get more out of it.
>>
>this entire episode
Holy shit it hit me too much with that nostalgic blast of when I was a kid and when my father always brought me to some shoddy back-alley eatery that had some of the best food in town.

It is rather silly that the beef stew IRL is more expensive than in-show. But I guess anime themed food always have a premium.

The thing is that every food in this anime is easily available in most parts of Japan. It sort of defeats the point to to a restaurant with the show's theme and pay extra for the privilege.

>that nostalgic blast of when I was a kid and when my father always brought me to some shoddy back-alley eatery that had some of the best food in town.
For me it was my grandfather. He would take me to this lunch counter place in the industrial part of town, where every other customer was a truck driver or city worker on a 1 hour coffee break. The kind of restaurant that closes at 5:30PM because they just open for lunch and coffee breaks.

>Was she in today's episode?
No, pudding girl is a half-elf and archmage.

She is also one of the few people who cheated and just summon her own personal door in her lab. It makes sense that an archmage would be able to replicate a portal. But the novel made it clear it is no simple feat.
>>
>>159938167

No rules. After all it isn't like she is hiding a way to create infinite doors from others. The summoning is genuinely hard.

Rude. I'm excitedly waiting for spoonbro and lizardbro to show up.

Well, if I was a powerful wizard who felt like making an isekai diner, I would make the portals "rewards" in dungeons for the adventurers and intelligent floor bosses or so and would prefer if the access remained exclusive to the select few who earn it. That's why I thought there might actually be some rules.

> A faint sound came from the black wall… which looked like a door with a picture of cat drawn on it from far away as it opened. It was extremely troublesome to open this door for powerless lilliputs when compared to other far-off giant races. It was necessary for the men of the village to tie a rope made of vines around the doorknob and pull like they just did.”

Not like he can use their world's money for anything in Japan. So I guess he just collects it and trades it to folks like the merchant for things he wants for his food research from the fantasy world.

Also he runs a regular restaurant the other days of the week in Japan, so he's likely making ends meet just fine that way.

Anime has actually been the main motivation for me to learn how to cook. I went from microwaving frozen garbage to cooking my own meals from scratch. I'm by no means a good chef but I learned basic skills and can cook things properly. I kept constantly seeing things in anime that looked simple and easy to make like Japanese curry, tonkatsu, omurice, etc, and thought "I can make that too", so I did. You can do it too, anon.

Aside from the spaghetti in today's episode, which is pretty damn simple, I don't think I could make most of the things in this show, though. At least, not nearly as good as he does.

You might have a point if they were eating there multiple times a week, but if it's only once a week it makes sense that they get the same thing every visit. It's like a once a week treat for them, or even longer than once a week since they probably can't go every single week.

>>159948654
You are putting the cart before the horse. They go to the restaurant because it serves the thing they really like, they do not get the thing they like because they go to the restaurant. They can't get that meal anywhere else, so if they want to eat it on a regular basis they have to go there. The fact they can only go once a week means they probably never get sick of it, where as if they could go several days in a row they'd probably get tired of it.
>>
>>159948884

The difference here is that this is food from another world that is far better than anything avaliable in your own. This isn't just a regular restaurant for them, it's a dragon's valued treasure. There is no reason for them to not try other things on the menu.
>>
>>159949051
>There is no reason for them to not try other things on the menu.
People form habits and tend to stick to what they know is good. You only get one meal a week and you want it to be a good experience, so you think "gee I could try something new and experiment, but on the other hand I'm really hungry for that good shit I know is great, I'll just order that and try a new dish some other time" and repeat that every week they go in. They might some day eventually try something new, but more than likely they'll just keep postponing it using that exact same logic.
>>
>>159948077
You mean last week's "Minced Beef Cutlet II?"
>>
>>159948088
I've done most of that already (especially since beef stew and Japanese curry are basically the same thing), but I've never thought to try teriyaki chicken. That should have been obvious how easy it is, its just a matter of making/getting a good sauce. I wonder if I can find a good recipe, or if prebought store stuff is basically the same.

>Japs consider grated Kraft Parmesan to be high quality cheese

It's hard to take the paragraph-long waxing about the food quality seriously when they use cheese that can't legally be called such in the EU.

I'm a clapistani but get some real parmigiano, damn.
>>

>He has to close his restaurant on saturday, which is a very busy day. That's a lot of money to lose.
Actually no, his restaurant is at the business district so there is no customers on a Saturday. His main customers are salary men and women, not shoppers.
>>
>>159949623
Technically it wasn't a Japanese person who said that at all. Really though, grated parmesan isn't a huge deal. Its just a condiment. It would be like complaining your ketchup or mayonnaise isn't made from scratch or something.
>>
>>159942876
His restaurant is business district so it's closed Saturday. That's why he's the only one there for Saturdays when the door appears.

If weekends were that lucrative he'd be closed on Monday and maybe Tuesday. But if you're business district, you work the Monday to Friday.

>>
>>159949690
It's like the difference between Breyer's "Frozen Dairy Dessert" and real ice cream. There's snobbery and then there's such a difference in quality that you can't legally call it the same product.
>>
>>159949297
It just feels like such a wasted opportunity. If you're given the opportunity to try food from an entirely different culture using entirely different ingredients and cooking methods as often as once a week, and that what you tried is much better than everything you've ever had, and every other customer who is eating a different item on the menu acts as if it's better than anything they've ever eaten as well, it would be crazy not to try out other items on the menu. I mean, I'm sure they're trying other things off-screen, but from what I remember reading in the LN, it never explicitly mentions them trying out other dishes either. And in the first episode when they're arguing over food, it appears as if they haven't tried the other meal they're arguing against. It'd just be nice to see them trying out something else in a short setting-the-mood scene or background scene or whatever they're called. Would calm my autism.

I'm not >>159949051 btw but I like what he said.

Also, if you want to continue this conversation further, I have to ask.

Would you make a pizza with this? Because it isn't that divorced from the fact that you don't have to refrigerate Kraft Parmesan, which should speak volumes about its quality.
>>
>>159949528
Americans don't stick to the silly rules of Italians regarding what should or shouldn't be eaten together.
>>
>>159949808
You have an adventurous personality then, most people prefer stability. Even if there's a reasonably good chance that an unknown option will return a positive result they prefer the option they know from personal experience returns a positive result. Eventually boredom might outweigh that comfort and that's how their favorites expands from 1 item to 2 items. It takes a while and most people end up with a list of 2-3 items at any given restaurant that they will order when they go there.
>>
>>159949726
>>159949811
I'll give you that Kraft is pretty crap, its just that most stuff you'll buy in a supermarket isn't much better anyway. I've always just gotten the grated Parmesan they sell in the deli, but I don't honestly know what they use either.

And no, I definitely wouldn't use that for a pizza, considering cheese is like the main ingredient.
>>
>>159949811
Do you have to refrigerate regular parmesan? I thought that stuff was dry enough to sit out indefinitely.
>>
>>159949877
>most people prefer stability
They are going through a magical door into another fucking world. That's about as adventurous as you can get.

Japan sells cheese at between 4-8 times the price as Western countries. Japanese foodies are known to bring 5-10 kg of cheese home if they visit Europe.

No, it's actually fucking a lot because the Dragon pays in ancient elven gold coins

> “Uwa… eight ancient elven gold coins.”
> “…Umu. The same as usual.”
> These gold coins that were somehow always in there every time were normally in the hands of aristocrats or wealthy merchants or on an elf himself or taken from some elven ruins by a skilled adventurer. If not, then you were out of luck finding them. Manufactured over one thousand years ago, these coins had the highest value to them as of now. There were eight of these ancient valuable gold coins, 41 silver coins of various origins, and around 700 copper coins.”

I think a regular gold coin was 100x that of a silver coin so these things must be even more valuable.

> “about the cathouse’s and the Other World’s money, it was decided that one copper coin was worth 100 yen, one silver coin was 1,000 yen, and one gold coin was 100,000 yen”
>>
>>159942551
>I'm dropping this show every week.
>>
>>159949976
Right? So why add more adventure onto it by picking random dishes. Just go with what you know tastes good. When I go to a restaurant it's cause I want a tasty meal, I don't wanna play roulette and hope I get a good dish by picking something I've never had before, I want something tasty cause I'm hungry. I have to be pretty fuckin bored with what I'm eating to give something else a chance when I could just order something I know for a fact based on many previous experiences will taste great.

>>
>>159950037

I am aware. But the only reason she "only" pay that much is because it was an agreed amount.

>> “about the cathouse’s and the Other World’s money, it was decided that one copper coin was worth 100 yen, one silver coin was 1,000 yen, and one gold coin was 100,000 yen”
And that is not an official exchange rate. It is merely what the chef does to convert the menu prices and wages to Isekai currency. It is simultaneously too undervalued and too overvalued.

The coins by their mental content are worth more than what he assigned for Japan. But the purchasing powers of these coins are such in the Isekai world that it is still expensive. Nothing he sells is priced at more than 1 silver piece, but you can live off 10 silver pieces for a month in Isekai.

As part of the wheel parmigiano doesn't need refrigeration, but freshly grated it should be, because it is relatively dry but not enough so in sufficient volume to be safe.

It's not bad. My problem with it is that I read Isekai Izakaya Nobu just before watching it. The two are near identical, only Nobu is set in a less fantastical (though still fantasy) world and the restaurant is Japanese soul food. While Shokudou is a fantasy world with western food.

The customers in Nobu tend to be rougher looking dudes while Shokudou has more qt314.

I personally think Nobu does things generally better, although it has my pet peeve of Japanese cuisine being some sort of super cuisine. But it's far more believable and less abrasively done than Shokugeki no Soma.

So yeah, Isekai Shokudou is nice. If you haven't read Isekai Izakaya Nobu, then you'd probably enjoy it even more. I would recommend adding it to your watch list.

Still, you don't need to spend a lot to eat well. My two most memorable meals are both cheap. First being authentic katsu-don made by a retired restaurant chef, who was running a tiny eatery as a hobby. The guy finally retired a few years later.

It's not like he stole the restaurant's recipe or anything. Anyone can eat at a restaurant, then try to replicate it on their own. Foods are not copyrighted.

This is why Coca Cola and KFC has a secret recipe. They can't legally stop someone from selling imitation foods, so the only thing they can do is keep their own recipes secret.

I'd disagree. I think both chefs are about the same level of social. Nobu's just happen to cook out in the open while Shokudou does it in the back. They're both about the customers for the most part Aside from the tax collector, the other customers in Nobu are thus far, more relatable than the ones in Shokudou. But hey, we're only at episode 3, so we'll see what develops.

>whose he going to sell it to for cash
Collectors, pawn shops, ebay... I'm sure there's an avenue for selling custom gold coins. As for how he gets the coins, why should anyone question it? They're not from any actual country, so he's probably not getting it via illegal salvage. There's no law against selling gold coins. Suspicious? Sure. But no one's reporting that their own cache of coins from a fictional country are being stolen.

>Because a small business suddenly dumping thousands of dollars more than usual into their accounts
You're thinking of wage earners, not small businesses. Small businesses can have stretches of good or bad business. So a sudden spike isn't too unusual. A few extra thousand a month is within reason as well. I mean, assuming he makes... say, an extra 10K USD a month from the gold and silver, that's actually not so much that you'd think there's something fishy going on.

The toughest part is finding a good source to convert the gold and silver.

>They had to remind us.
It is why so many medieval recipes don't work with modern meats. Modern meat is either too lean or too tender. Trying to cook Coq au vin with a modern chicken would lead to meat disintegrating into the liquid. Roasting time of a pork roast is also longer because the meat is tougher, but the extra fat of old school meat meant it doesn't need to be covered in bacon.

And it was pointed out that beef steak is unpopular in Isekai because beef their is usually old cow. So no one want to eat shoe leather.

Note that the anime didn't go into it, but the reason the owner doesn't serve the isekai ingredients to his customers is because he isn't sure if the ingredients are up to Japanese hygiene standards. He picks all the ingredients from his suppliers himself and know who grows them and where. The Isekai ingredients are of unknown origin so he refuse to serve them to other people.

He is satisfied with his weekday earnings. He works on Saturdays because he loves the idea of all these people treating his ordinary meals like the food of the gods. Trying to turn a hobby into a job would suck all the joy out of it.
>>
>>159957342
Beleive it or not it's actually pretty hard to sell things like unscourced gold and silver as gold and silver. Rare and valuable metals like those often have a certificate of some kind accompanying them proving that they're real and not fake, even cheapo barely-gold jewelry from department stores have little certificates. He'll need to get his coins appraised if he wants to sell them for even half of their material value, and that really will look suspicious as fuck and draw a lot of attention when a random restaurant owner in a city starts bringing in lots of old random coins every month. And god forbid if they ever audited his restaurant and either couldn't account for the increased amount or else notice he's selling a plate of curry for like $200 on Saturdays when the shop is supposedly closed to the public.

Must be a cultural thing. Where I am, selling gold jewelry/trinkets isn't that big a deal. I mean, it's certainly not common, but it's not such a big deal that every transaction has to be certified.

Extra income really isn't that big a deal here either. Especially if you're a small business owner. It's not uncommon for a businessman to have multiple avenues of income. They could be running a restaurant on weekdays and doing commission work, trading or playing the stockmarket at night or on weekends.

Of course, just because they have multiple avenues of income, doesn't mean they're rolling in dough. Fortunes can go up and down. Deals can go sour.

From the looks of this episode, he doesn't make THAT much extra every month either. Granted, he's giving it all away for a sack of grocery, but taking into account that a lot of those coins probably aren't even all that pure... should he have some way of converting those materials into cash, it could easily be hidden into the regular store accounts. Unless my estimation is totally wrong and that box of assorted coins is worth hundreds of thousands.

I'm willing to bet that wherever you are, there are TONS of street corner hawkers and the like selling bogus jewelry, because that's what happens when there's no standards for authentication. That's how it used to be in America and other western countries. There's no law against selling fake jewelry as long as you're careful not to advertise it as real so you don't get slapped with false advertising. But there are laws against forging certificates of authenticity. Thus, if you don't have certificates people assume you're selling questionable products, if not outright fakes, and the savvier ones will shun you altogether leaving only the terminally gullible to rip off for a living.
